Nate is something like 4th in fWAR, this year, so I find it hard to be critical, but man-o-man!

I love Nate and he was superb last start. Can’t always be great. Let’s just hope the bats come alive today and help him

I think we are in a wild card spot by about 3 games so we have a bit of breathing room too if we lose.

These are definitely the games you want to win though. Yankees/A’s are playing each other so a win means we gain a game on one of them regardless of what happens in their game

Problem is we have the rays after this. This team has been abysmal lately against the rays.

Agreed for sure.

Agreed and then we have Cleveland and then Tampa again

Need to win games like this with our ace. Without a doubt.

I met Paul Quantrill back in 1989, during the YAZ HOF induction weekend. The SOX were supposed to play the Reds in an exhibition game, but the Reds were a no-show because of transportation problems. Instead, the SOX ended up playing against some of their minor leaguers including Paul, who was at Pawtucket at the time. Edited by SPLENDIDSPLINTER

I was at that induction. It was the biggest crowd ever at Cooperstown. Bench and Yaz were very popular. I am not sure, but that might have been the last time they did the induction ceremony behind the Library of the museum.

Love that first inning, but it's obvious Quantrill is way better than Eovaldi--better control and better mix of pitches.

Here's hoping Eovaldi can go 2 more shut out innings so Cora can bring in Whitlock.

This umpire is f***ing terrible

I am so sick of the announcers covering for these umpires. They say some will Call it if it’s slightly off the plate for both teams and some have a very tight strike zone and some don’t. It shouldn’t be like that. Either it’s off the plate or it’s not. This umpire has been a complete and utter joke

The umpire whiners are at it again. To me Quantrill gets more calls because he is always around the plate and rarely in the middle of it.

I'm probably wrong, but I think it was a mistake not to have Plawecki catch Eovaldi today.

I'm with the announcers. Quantrill has better command than Eovaldi today. When Eovaldi hits a corner, it's luck. Quantrill is consistently very close to his target.

I like how you did your daily 'blame VAZ' post w/o mentioning VAZ's name.

Plawecki would have never ripped a single like that one by Vaz, so we're all good.

Actually, I do try to give Vazquez credit when it's deserved. I also think he deserves to be the primary catcher. But Plawecki in my opinion is one of the reasons why Eovalid is having a terrific season. No question Vazquez was great with ERod last night--as well as Richards and Ottavino.

You got me. The Cleveland fielders are lucky neither of them was injured on that 120 mph scorcher.

In all honesty, I did like Vazquez's slide into 2b.

5 innings, 63 pitches by Quantrill. He is nasty and should be good for 7 innings. Eovaldi has needed 78 pitches to go 4 innings, so 5 innings, if he can do it, is probably his max.

With Eovaldi, the disparity is not as great as with others:

ERA/OPS Against

2021

3.78/ .665 w Plawecki

4.03/ .723 w Vaz

2020

0.62/ .611 Plawecki (only 14 Innings)

4.98/ .856 Vaz

Career

3.24/ .656 Plawecki

4.30/ .765 Vaz

(Disclaimer: CERA is fake news.)
