Cole has had some rough outings without his spider tac

Really? In his last three games he gave up 2, 2, and 2 runs and pitched 7, 8, and 6 innings. Tuesday (7 innings, 2 ER), however, he did walk 3 Royals. The 8 innings were June 16 vs. the Jays.

The Jays' line-up is scary.

Btw, Wong was very good behind the plate. Is he going to be EO's personal catcher?

He looked better behind the plate than any Sox catcher this year. Granted, no throws to 2b on attempted steals, but also no passed balls and no wild pitches. He does jerk his glove toward the middle of the plate, but not as much as Vazquez. For all we know, he called all the pitches, and I didn't see many shaken off.

Unless yesterday was just an aberration brought on by excitement, Wong is already a better defensive catcher than Vaz. Now that is not to say that Vaz was not better at one point. IMO Vaz's defensive skills have deteriorated including his vaunted "framing" which now pretty much SUCKS. Heck I am not sure framing even matters anymore. The UMPs have no idea what is a strike at this point.

The book on Wong has often mentioned him changing positions from catcher, so maybe we shouldn't get too excited about Wong's D.

From soxprospects.com:

Field: Very versatile defender. Has played catcher, second base and third base in pro ball. Even played some outfield in college. Moves well behind the plate, but still working on his receiving and framing skills. Shows soft hands in the infield. Potential average defender behind the plate.

Arm: Average arm strength for a catcher. Solid arm strength at second base, passable at third base.

Nice game for Eovaldi, huh? He was still bringing it in the 7th and 8th.

He's been pretty solid, all year.

A couple of blips, but pretty solid.

This is true. Unless the framing is in brail, it doesn't matter. In fact, the catchers are better off not moving their glove.

Maybe moving a little but making it look like the ball forced the glove to move slightly.

Varitek was an artist in framing. Maybe passing that skill on to other catchers is not as easy as it looks. I'm sure he has worked with VAZ in that area.

Framing = fooling ump and turning ball into strike. Robot umps now!

One area of defenders Vaz gets good grades in is pitch-framing.

I don’t think he’s bad at blocking wild throws.

He’s good at throwing out base stealers.

My biggest beef is handling the pitchers. Always has been.
