The spin rate stat is the culprit. The WEEI guys can quote Richards' spin rate--before and now--as well as other Sox pitchers like Eovaldi and ERod who don't have high spin rates.

I wouldn't call it pitching; pitching requires skill. Throwing would be the more accurate verb.

Funny thing about Richards. Everybody else is throwing breaking balls, but he can't/won't and prefers to blame his problem on that meanie, the Commissioner of MLB.

The SOX have an offensive handicap that their opposition does not have. The SOX handicap is that they do not get to bat against their own starters.

WEEI guys talking about how Richards didn't throw a single curve in the last two games because of the foreign substance ban (renewed with teeth). It looks OK to me, but his fast ball, which he is throwing a lot, does not.

 

"OK" was not what the Richard's curve was with the Spydertac. It was ungodly...best pitch he had earlier this year. Now its not even meh. Its "spit on it" bad. Yes his FB also sucks. I think MLB just put him out of the baseball business.

What a contrast. Workman is still trying to prove himself with the Sox and tonight has thrown a zillion knuckle curves. He has given up 2 walks, no hits, and no runs in 1.1 innings.

 

Workman is pitcher. Richards is a crybaby. Hill for the Rays is also a pitcher.

Tampa signed Hill for one year at 2.55 million dollars. Pretty good bang for the buck.

Just about everybody else is adjusting with varying degrees of success. If Richards can't adjust, that's good for MLB because obviously he has been cheating heavily. Too bad for the Sox of course, but no worse than acquiring Sandoval, HanRam, et al.

I might add that I like the fact that this rule enforcement was not done in the offseason, which would only have allowed guys like Richards to figure out a different way to cheat.

Too bad cheater Richards can't adjust. He went 1.2 innings and gave up 4 earned runs. Workman and Rios, neither one an ace reliever, have gone 2.1 innings and given up 0 runs. Plus Workman saved cheater Richards from more damage in the bottom of the 2d.

First 5 guys in the Sox batting order have each faced Hill 3 times and clearly can't figure him out.

There should be a lot more controlled swings on 3-0 pitches in MLB. They are often cookies, but those that do swing are trying for the moon instead of a hit. If they are looking for a walk, you will have a better chance by showing the pitcher a swing on 3-0 than a take. he then knows he has to make a pitch, which he is generally incapable of doing

Meh. Simple fact is that tonight Hill has his number. He owns Devers.

It’s pretty obvious that Richards was one of the major cheating culprits. His spin rate is way down and he can’t get movement and get people out without the spin rate. He’s pretty much useless without the foreign substance. He might not be useful for the remainder of the season.

2nd walk for Phillips , a .200 hitter. There are few pitchers and a lot of throwers making big bucks at this level
