Oh it's not a fact, we can never know, that is a permutation that we will never see played out nut I would believe someone if they came from a parallel universe and told me we lose to LA without David Price

Was his name jacko?

I'm not arguing about his pitching in the WS. I'd be fine calling him the MVP. That does not mean it's a fact we couldn't have won without him,

The rest of the playoffs he let up 7 runs, 11 hits and 6 walks in 13.1 IP (3 GS'd).

That's a 4.73 ERA.

Priceless!

LOL funny how you are splitting those numbers.

You are overtaxing his performance vs NY in those POs.

My turn. Put away that DS vs NY performance which is symbolic compared with his performance in the whole regular season plus the ALCS and the WS and what you got? In my book? A stud close to ace.

The samples are not even close.

i.e.

I thought the Sox two best postseason--not just WS--pitchers were Eovaldi with 22.1 innings and an ERA of 1.61 and kelly with 11.1 innings and an ERA of .79. Price threw the most innings, 26.2, but his ERA was 3.46.

Price did great in the World Series, byr he pitched 3 good to great games out of 5 playoff starts. We won every series easily. It's hard to say we lose without any one player.

Yes, we were that good!

Price in 2018 playoffs (reverse order):

IP ER H+BB

7.0 1 5 (pitching on short rest, a gutsy and huge win while we were up 3-1 in series)

6.0 2 6 (huge win v LAD to tie the series at 1-1- no doubt- HUGE!)

6.0 0 3 (Awesome pitched game v HOU in a series we were up 3-1)

4.2 4 9 (We had to come back after Price left down 4-2 to win v HOU)

1.2 3 5 (turned the Yankee series from 1-0 us to 1-1.)

None of this is proof we lose without him.

It would have been harder to win without big Nate.

It’s fair to say that we wouldn’t have found that production within that 2018 pitching staff, therefore, yeah, we don’t win it all that year without Price.

It's all hypothetical. Let's say Price was injured for the World Series - who would take his place? We have no idea. If we got terrible starts in those 2 games, hypothetically, we could be down 3 games to 2 after 5 games.

Put it this way, who would have replaced that production? I’ll wait.

Yup, kind of the point.

Thanks.

Yes, of course.

I'm not the one trying to prove we would have won without Price.

I think we would have, because that team always did whatever it took, but it's not a "fact" we win without him.

It would have been harder, for sure.

My guess is we'd have started Nate in one of those games and missed his great pen work. (Nate started 0 games in the WS and pitched 8 innings in 5 games.

Maybe Porcello, Sale or ERod pitch the "other game."

IP in 5 WS games

13.2 Price

8.0 Nate

6.1 ERod

5.0 Sale

4.2 Porcello

Remember, we had 5 days off before the WS, so it's not like our other options were over-worked in the WS.

Hypothetical is not fact.

LOL you have been a bit dense on this man. Still I respect your opinion. No big deal.

The point was to put in context the weight of Price in that team specially in that WS. As Hugh said, several people were even considering Price as the MVP. It speaks volumes of his value and weight in 2018. Pearce won it and it’s oks but Price was fairly in that race.

Said that in my book we don’t win it all without Price and Pearce in 2018.

I just focused on you saying the whole playoffs and that it was a "fact" we don't win without Price.

I have no problem saying Price was the most valuable player in the WS, only.

It would have been harder to win that series without him more than probably anyone else, except maybe Nate, but I'm fine with saying Price was numuero uno.

My position is that the 2018 was so very strong, we could have won without any one player. Probably not easily, but yes, I think we were that good.

If we really want to play the game to the extreme, Eovaldi's great performance in Game 3 didn't really affect a thing. We lost the game, and simply would have lost it quicker.

You're right that the 2018 team was awesome.

The only real issue is that the playoffs are short series where just about anything can happen.

No doubt.

I was just stating my opinion that I felt we were so freaking great in 2018, we probably would have won it all, without any single player.

Eovaldi and Price are at the top of the list as foils to my opinion, and we'll never know all the "what ifs?"

Yes, anything can happen, including a 3rs, 4th, 5th or 6th starter doing well, instead of Price or Eovaldi.

Maybe they bomb and set the wrong tone, and we fall apart. I don't think that team had "fall apart" in their vocabulary, but yes, anything can happen.

(This from someone who does not believe the playoffs are a total crap shoot.)

I don't believe the playoffs are a total crap shoot either.

But a lot of unpredictable stuff happens.

Last year the Dodgers were clearly the best team and the champs. But they were on the verge of losing to Atlanta, down 3 games to 1.

I don't disagree, but we beat then 4-1 and could easily have won the game we lost.

I know momentum can change on a dime, but that 2018 team did face a few times, where doubt could have crept in, like when Sale went down with an injury, and they always slapped it away with a mighty show of force and dominance.

I've never seen a team like that, at least a Sox team.

There are times, like 2013, where even though the team was not all that great on paper, you just know nothing will stop them.

That 2018 team was so awesome that we brought them all back in 2019 to do it all over again, and what the heck happened? ;)

They lost the mojo.

Key injuries.
