Dave Dombrowski is known for depleting farm systems and handing out big contracts .. quite the opposite of Jerry Dipoto.

The Red Sox face the tough choice of going halfway and hoping for breaks or implementing a full-blown rebuild.

who signed Cano?

The Sox responded to big Papi being in the house last night by playing inspired baseball .

ahhahaha. i said that on last nights GT. so embarrassing. poor papi....

Dipoto has had two stints working for the Red Sox already.

More likely the Sox give the GM title to Romero and maybe hire a President...

Who signed Pujols for the Angels?

Los Angeles Angels owner Arte Moreno?

Now, the Pujols signing was reportedly 99% Arte Moreno, and this is where Dipoto's tenure as Angels GM starts to get interesting, for he quickly realized that he wasn't the main man when it came to personnel decisions. Arte negotiated with Albert, Arte wooed Albert, Arte included a 10-year personal services clause in an already ridiculously long contract, Arte gave him almost a quarter-billion dollars.

John Bolten was fired the day after DD was fired!

Coincidence?

Now if only someone would fire Michael Bolton.

Preferably into orbit...

A full blown rebuild is not happening in Boston.

They will go halfway, as you call it, but that doesn't mean that both tasks of staying competitive and retooling the farm can't be accomplished.

So Papi is qualified to be the GM based on a fictional conversation that includes a deal offer Mookie already turned down?
So, you left your sense of humour at the bar?

There are on;y 2 requirements for a GM

1, Intimate baseball knowledge, and

2. Ability to interact wothe basemall players/

Know so,epme more qualified.

We'll likely keep Sale, Price and Eovaldi, even if just to hope their trade stock rises the first half of 2020.

I think we keep Bogey, Devers, Vaz, Barnes, Workman and ERod. JD and JBJ may be the only big names to go, besides all FAs departing this winter.

No, that's not even close to a "full blown rebuild." It does beg the "halfway" question, as losing those two, resetting the tax and trying to win in 2020 seem to be at odds with each other, and if the idea is not to win, then why not try to trade anyone not under team control beyond 2020 or 2021? I get the need to drawn fans and keep interest high, but I do worry about the "halfway" philosophy.

It worked when we traded Lester & Lackey for ML'ers not prospects. I called that "halfway" back then. I had wanted top prospects not Joe Kelly, Allen Craig and Cespedes (who morphed into Porcello). Maybe it will work again, but then again, we didn't win in 2018 because of Kelly and Porcello.

I don't see the firing of Dombrowski as a sign that Henry is going to blow the team up, or anything close to that. Despite the way they have looked for much of this season, the team has a lot of talent and should be able to compete next year with some pitching help. I don't expect any big surprises in terms of getting rid of the starting players. I guess you could call trading JBJ a big surprise, but most would not.

It is possible to win now while having a vision for the long term. Henry just needs to find the right guy to do it.

So we're not necessarily at the cliff?

The cliff is looming as large as ever. We are very much constrained both financially and in terms of prospects for a few years.

If Henry decides to reset the luxury tax, things will be rough.

Doesn't this kind of contradict this:

Henry doesn't seem to have a lot of trouble finding the right guys . But no matter how successful they may be , things seem to go sour .

It's the nature of that profession.

It's going yo yake more than a white shirt MBA to put some piss and vigor into this group. Big Papi could do it, that's for sure. Give him 3 o4 Harvardian types to do the paper work and, well, can you imagine the new interests and excitements?

IMO Papi would be a good dugout coach. Whether or not he'd take a job (!) is another matter.

No idea if Papi would even be a good bench coach. And he’s given no indication he wants any type of job anywhere. The only thing I (think I) know is he is extremely revered among the Dominican players. That’s definitely a plus...

Eddie Collins played 2bd bas for the Red Sox, and also as their GM. And Hall of Famer, just as Papi will be. He was a college grad (Colgate) but I doubt think many of college courses were of much help to hin as a major league GM. .

I was at a spring training game, here in Ft Myers, right after Papi came over from the Twins. (who also train here) when ha came from the dressing rooms, he was targeted by half a dozen Twins players, Hugs and laughter. His best friend was the Twins center fielder. I forget his name, and he trailed Papi all over the field.

Add a thousand moments like that to the Betts returns to the digou straight to Papi. Questions, every day.

Papi would never take a coaching or managerial job. Too permanent. The approach by Henry might be, "David, help me put this mess back together. Two years, maybe. Special Assistant, maybe? GM?/ Let's talk about it."

Actually being popular among players might be detrimental to being GM. The arbitration process can get ugly at times, and, likable or not, Papi would have to make cases about why a player deserves less money than he asking for. That can absolutely destroy the very camaraderie you want him to bring...

Very true, but I can't imagine that happening as much with Papo involved as it would otherwise. I just think it would be worth a try.

AND, I'm sure we'd have one hell of lot more intense and longer work outs than they had last year. (amd much later tee times)

I don't think workouts are either the problem or the province of the GM...

If I'm not mistaken (happens more oftem these days) Eddie Collins, ex-2nd baseman, was Yawkee's GM when they scooped the likes of Foxx, Cramer. Grove. etc from the near bankrupt Connie Mack.
