TylerD is going for a purple heart or something because tonight's game is fraught with peril. For starters, so far this year our guys have a losing record at Fenway. We have good hitting--hooray! hooray--but can be shut down by good pitching, and Tanaka (ERA 4.00) is pitching tonight--and he is backed up by one of the best bullpens in MLB. The Yankees also have good hitting, and Porcello is going for the Sox--he of the 5.61 ERA.

Nevertheless, a game worth watching because these two teams are one of the best rivalries in sports. Fenway is a very photogenic ball park, and ain't nothing guaranteed for either side in a MLB game. Tanaka has a better repertoire and normally better control than Porcello, but he is anything but unbeatable this year. Forget the London game when both were terrible. I just like this Sox lineup. Lefties have a .787 OPS vs. Tanaka, and Cora can put several decent ones (especially Devers and Holt) out there and some good righty bats too.

Yankees will be without Sanchez for this series , so we catch a break there . This series has a little different feel than it usually does . The Sox just need wins , no matter who the opponent is . Like Porcello, Tanaka is very vulnerable to the long ball . Go with Boston in this one .

I wouldn't have created this game thread but I personally know that Porcello is going to pitch the game of his life and win this for us..... And by that I mean he will go 6 innings and keep it at 3 runs or less (or so I hope)

Porcello lets up a lot of bombs, and the Yanks have teed off on him often, but these 4 Sox players, combined, have 9 HRs in about 110 ABs vs Tanaka:

3 JD

2 Moreland

2 Beni

2 Betts

These 4 have 10 HRs off Porcello but in 143 ABs:

3 EE

3 Hicks

2 Gardner

2 Did

Moon, today is the day..... today is the day my friend that Porcello kicks some serious Yankee ass.

For Porcello, it is all about the curveball. If he is getting no depth on that thing, he is gonna get smashed. Tanaka just needs to be Tanaka. Last time they faced, he couldn't locate anything. Tanaka is what he is. He is gonna allow a HR, he is not gonna walk many, he is gonna K a few. When all is said and done, he gives you a 6IP 2-3ER start and the line looks more impressive than your memory of his starts. This is how he is in the regular season, although historically, he heats up the final 2 months and into the post season.

As bad as the overall pitching is in MLB can it actually get worse? Yes, once MLB outlaws the current defensive shift.

OTOH it might get better if they 'modify' the baseball.

Personally, I'm against the league butting in on how a manager wants to set his defense. If said manager wants to put 7 guys in LF, he should be able to do so. If the batters can't or won't adjust to the shift, tough s***.

True, but it seems that since 1969 when the league lowered the mound, every modification to the game has been to benefit the offense. Disallowing the current version of the shift is just another f'ing rule to increase runs per game.

A lot of people think the rise in prominence of the shift is what led to all the launch angle stuff and guys swinging for the fences.

I'm comfortable with blaming that jackass Joe Maddon for all of it.

I was confident that the Red Sox would sweep Tampa, but we ran into a guy (Morton) contending for Cy Young. I fear that we will be running into a buzzsaw this weekend, although Porcello has pitched well against them in Yankee Stadium until Sanchez hit a 1-handed 3 run HR. No Sanchez tonight.

This game will really come down to Porcello. Is he plays the way he has the last 5 starts we are toast. Simple as that.

I'm with you. He is actually capable of that when he is on.

Agree on the Tampa series, yesterday's bravura start by Morton, and this weekend. But that won't stop me from watching.

He needs to avoid Porcello’s, but that is hard against the Yankees.

Outlawing the Overload shift won't effect the quality of pitching. It sucks and I suspect it will continue to suck until we can backfill this mess with pitchers that have actual pitching talent and that pitch within themselves. i might be pushing up daisies by then but the pitching itself won't get any better until that happens.

As for the Overload shift, getting rid of it will yield more exciting, more interesting baseball and better pace to the game because it will generate more balls in play, more base hits and more action on the bases. The idea that all these HR'a and K's add excitement is a laughable absurdity. Even with all these HR's MLB does not even average 3 HR's per game total. So for about 10 seconds of "excitement" we get 3 hours of guys trudging back to the dugout having K'ed AGAIN.

That said, there are so many changes and reversals Manfred has to make to return this game to anything like its past glories including, THE Rocket ship baseball that has to go, these stupid, protects nobody rules around 2nd base particularly, then the overload shift, and if travel is going to be what it is, I would prefer they allow certain PED's under a doctor's supervision because they are killing these guys.

What in the wide. wide world of sports do you mean by "pitchers what have actual pitching talent and that pitch within themselves?"

I'm beginning to have second thoughts on the overload shifts because some hitters--including Devers for one-- have learned how to go the other way. If this continues, fine. Otherwise, I agree that the shifts bad for MLB.

Too many "pitchers" filling out MLB unis these days should not have left AA yet and maybe should NEVER leave AA. Its a joke. They have no command.....none....nada.....zippo

For one thing, throwing hard is NOT PITCHING.

Little do people know, I'm scared on the inside..... I hope Porcello doesn't bomb lol.

I think 6 innings 3 runs or less is a decent outing against the Yankees.

NESN pre-game crew blaming Cash for the pitching substitution f*** ups in Tampa. While I STILL think Cash should have brought Morton Salt out to pitch the 8th inning, I am not buying it. Cash has done this Pitcher to position player and back again switch before without a hitch. It is clownish but he has done it without a hitch before. Everything Angel Hernandez touches turns to s***. I would bet the farm that Angel just f***ed it up.
