Looking around the web, I see a lot of sites thinking the Sox will move on an outfielder. BoSox Injection, for example, lists Yasiel Puig, Adam Jones and Alex Gordon as potential targets. I’m doubtful.

Closers and starters are the other positions listed.

While plenty want a closer - and it’s certainly a possibility - I think the Sox prioritize a starter who can be pushed back into the bullpen when everyone is healthy. Likely also they want a pitcher not under contract next season and one who can be had for something from their lackluster farm.

My thoughts are:

Andrew Cashner

Chris Archer (really not what he once was)

Trevor Cahill

Marco Estrada

Jeremy Hellickson

Derek Holland

Ivan Nova

Tanner Roark

Zach Wheeler (probably too popular for a modest Red Sox package)

Alex Wood

Jason Vargas

Wade LeBlanc (Although he’s cheap even with his option for next year, so he probably stays put)

Thoughts?

No idea what Pitt would want for Archer, but he has been awful this year, and his $9mill option for next year could spell the end of Porcello’s Boston tenure at the end of this season. Assuming Archer comes back and refuses to suck...

Looking at a guy like Sean Doolittle.

If the Sox are thinking closer, and Washington decides to sell, he is absolutely in play...

Not sure the Nats will be sellers . If they are , there will be plenty of competition for Doolittle.

Former Cy Young Award winner Felix Hernandez is a sidelined rental but the righthander is not the Seattle icon the Red Sox reportedly targeted 10 years ago:

https://www.seattletimes.com/sports/mariners/sources-mariners-nixed-three-way-felix-hernandez-trade-sending-padres-slugger-adrian-gonzalez-to-seattle/

:):):)

Seattle innings-eater Mike Leake would take pressure off the Red Sox bullpen but the net $19 million remaining on his contract through 2020 could be a deterrent (and there's no guarantee that Leake would waive his no-trade provision to head East).

As a California native and ASU alum, he might prefer the west coast. But I think the competitive athlete in him would want to escape the Seattle rebuild.

I’m not a huge Leake fan, but getting him would certainly answer any questions about re-signing Porcello. The Sox would likely try to dump salary back at Seattle, like Steven Pearce, for example. Maybe throw in Tyler Thornburg.

As we have established, Seattle does seem more interested in jettisoning financial commitments than acquiring talent...

Cashner is expensive and isn’t very good. My guess is you don’t spend on him

Archer was acquired for two superstars. They won’t get rid of him when his value is down.

Trevor Cahill sucks

Estrada has sucked and is currently hurt with a back injury

Hellickson has sucked and is on the IL with shoulder soreness

Holland was demoted to the pen as he sucks

Ivan Nova has sucked

Roark is going to be in demand. Expiring contract, good production in a tough park. He’ll bring back something to the Reds, maybe more than what you’re willing to move

Wheeler is getting moved, but he’s been awful in a pitchers park and keeps giving up big flies. While he’s the “bet on stuff” candidate, he’s a potential disaster waiting to happen.

Wood has been shut down the whole year due to back issues

Jason Vargas is interesting. Throws nothing but somehow gets outs. He’d probably be an easy acquisition. I’d focus here if I were the Sox. He won’t cost much. Will be at least somewhat reliable. Isn’t on a big contract

Leblanc has been awful in a pitchers park

Short and sweet. No starters. None. Too expensive and too risky. No position players either. We have plenty of talent already even with Nunez and Pearce having bad years and Mookie and Beni also a little down. Maybe a reliever or two, but nobody like Kimbrel.

Trading Devers for anyone, even Scherzer, would be a blunder.

He’s mediocre and not desirable, but the Sox could acquire him as a swingman. BLtimore reportedly would give him away and he’s probably an upgrade over Johnson.

Well, they either trade him for what they can, stick with him for 2 final months, or pick up his $9mill option

Trevor Cahill sucks

See Cashner comments. Bear in mind the Sox don’t have a lot of great trade chips.

Estrada has sucked and is currently hurt with a back injury

Hellickson has sucked and is on the IL with shoulder soreness

Probably worth avoiding, even if healthy in 5 weeks.

Holland was demoted to the pen as he sucks

Ivan Nova has sucked.

Maybe I’m underestimating the Sox trade fodder, but I think pitchers like this might be in play. And still might be upgrades over Weber/Velasquez/Johnson, etc.

These guys might be the biggest rental starters to move. Both are going somewhere, unless Cincy switches gears and decides to make a run.

Wood has been shut down the whole year due to back issues

Ok I admit I missed that. But Eood is always hurt and would be a questionable target even if he was healthy. He has two states : hurt, and “about to get hurt”

Jason Vargas is interesting. Throws nothing but somehow gets outs. He’d probably be an easy acquisition. I’d focus here if I were the Sox. He won’t cost much. Will be at least somewhat reliable. Isn’t on a big contract

He is possible, but I hope the Sox don’t get another lefty.

Leblanc has been awful in a pitchers park

And is not someone the cost-cutting Mariners are prioritizing to trade. He’s cheap. And so is his option.

I read an article a week or so ago stating that the Padres wouldn't mind moving Renfroe. It's been mentioned on this forum before.

I would at least kick the tires a few times on this.

To play where?

Unless the Sox are dealing Benintendi, they don’t need Renfroe right now...

What word would you have used for the 2018 trade deadline Eovaldi?

Sometimes getting a pitcher who has not been doing all that good works out like a charm.

You wouldn't want to give up Benintendi for Renfroe?

Are you suggesting trading Benintendi for Renfroe?

Renfroe is two years older, a weak defensive outfielder whose only trick is hitting home runs during a season where EVERYONE is hitting home runs.

Maybe the Sox move Benintendi for a pitcher and pursue Renfroe. But not until November...

Renfroe is hitting HRs in a place where Hrs are far more rare. Imagine him in Fenway

His career OBP of .299 is not super-impressive.

The last guy we lusted after because he could hit home runs in San Diego was A-Gon...

What about wheeler from the Mets? That’s someone I wouldn’t mind trading for without giving up the farm. He has some talent but is struggling a little.

I am wheeler fan. He plays for a crappy organization.

Why ? I mean you absolutely fit that bat in at Fenway .I would start Hunter Renfroe over Benny at Home 75 percent and Benny plays bigger Ball parks on the Road for his Glove .Renfroe will be a cheap plus power bat with a clutch Gene in him .teamates love Renfroe .

That's what we said about AGon. I remember predicting he'd hit 50+.

Half serious ? Benny and Casas for Max Sherzer would you ? Yes there's smoke on Max on the block .

I'd throw in Johnson (& Thornburg).

Henry would have to be okay with paying mega taxes for a while.
