Arguably stats like batting average are contrived, and frankly, misunderstood.

 

Not to mention, stupidly titled. I mean, it’s not an average, it’s a percentage. (And to make it weirder, it’s slugging percentage is not a percentage; it’s an average.)

 

I don't quite get it. If BA is a % why isn't SLG a %? The only difference is it measures total bases instead of hits.

Slugging percentage is not measured out of 100%. (A perfect SLG is 4.000, or 400%.).

 

The best way to describe the number is it represents the average number of bases per at bat...

Yes. He is averaging 56.2 bases per 100 at bats. Where as a .320 hitter is getting a hit in 32 percent of his at bats...
