The deadline is today.

The Sox have 5 open spots on their 40 man roster. Chavis, Hernandez and Ockimey are no-brainers. Do they add anyone else?

I'm curious whether they might add Jhon Nunez. He's not much, but in terms of in-house emergency catching options, he's probably the best we have unless we sign some MLFAs

Apparently the Sox are about to acquire RHP Colten Brewer from San Diego to take one of these spots. Brewer is depth at best...

Yes, they will trade Estafan Quiroz a 19 year old 2nd baseman. Funny they would trade a 2nd base prospect when Pedroia is a little iffy. At any rate, I don't think either player is a major part of 2019.

Quiroz turns 27 in February, which makes his trade more questionable. The guy was originally signed as Pedroia insurance. Maybe this is a sign the Sox think Pedroia is doing a lot better?

Probably not. Cora reportedly wants a defensive 3b on the roster. That player might also be a 2b option.

I do think Brewer will see some innings out of the pen in 2019. He does have to be placed on the 40 man roster, which makes him eligible...

Not so sure about that. Look at his AAA numbers. brewer didn't show up well in his rookie season but apparently he has a very nasty low 90's cutter and looks like he might just sneak into the middle echelons of someone's bullpen at some point.

Trying to set up the next Brasier? At the very least it cost us very little.

Maybe he will be our MVP next year? :)

Denyi Reyes, excellent. Pitchers, that throw strikes, and don't walk batters in the Minors, always a good thing. Command of the strike zone more important then velocity. Edited by OH FOY!

Esteban Quiroz, we hardly knew ye. I'm a little surprised he was traded, but I guess relief pitching depth is a bigger need than 2B depth. And who knows, Brewer might actually be good.

The fact that we thought Quiroz had some value is why he was tradable at all.

Brewer looks interesting, and we have Holt, Nunez, Lin and Hernandez in the mix at 2B, even assuming no Pedroia.

327 innings, and 33 BB's, that's what I'm talking about. Just turned 22, I'm psyched.

Baseball Reference projects Brewer to pitch 33 big league innings with a 4.20 ERA and a 1.36 WHIP with just under 9 k/9 and a bb/9 of 3.6. I'd love that to be accurate, that's a good result from a depth relief arm.

I was talking about Reyes, and his Minor Leagues. He's also 32-7 and a 2.12 ERA in 4 seasons of Minor League Ball.

He has options, so he very likely starts the year in Rhode Island and waits for a chance

The Sox added Chavis, Hernandez, Travis Lakins, Brewer, Josh Taylor and Denyi Reyes. They DFAd Cuevas to make room and apparently are willing to take their chances with Ockimey...

So, we add Chavis, lakins, D Hernandez, D reyes, Josh taylor and newly acquired Colten Brewer. I count 39 roster slots filled. I imagine a FA signing will fill that void.

Anyone know when you can place someone on the 60 day DL (Wright, Pedey or marco hernandez)?

Any other acquisition would mean trading or DFA'ing someone, most likely from this list:

Swihart

Marco Hernandez

Robby Scott

Thornburg

C Shepherd

What's the chances we lose someone to rule 5?

Victor Acosta

Christopher Acosta

Yoan Aybar

Roldani Baldwin

Trey Ball

Juan Barriento

Edilson Batista

Eduard Bazardo

Jordan Betts

Marino Campana

Rusney Castillo

Juan Centeno

Luis Colmenares

Eduard Conde

Harrison Cooney

Jake Cosart

Ricardo Cubillan

Enmanuel De Jesus

Chad De La Guerra

Jhonathan Diaz

Jerry Downs

Nick Duron

Junior Espinoza

Willis Figueroa

Devon Fisher

Austin Glorius

Daniel Gonzalez

Juan Hernandez

Oscar Hernandez

Tyler Hill

Dedgar Jimenez

Trevor Kelley

Trenton Kemp

Matt Kent

Marcos Lantigua

Adam Lau

Deiner Lopez

Isaias Lucena

Chris Madera

Danny Mars

Algenis Martinez

Tate Matheny

Kevin McAvoy

Daniel McGrath

Samuel Miranda

Joseph Monge

Mark Montgomery

Jhon Nunez

Josh Ockimey

Angel Padron

Yorvin Pantoja

Roniel Raudes

Austin Rei

Hildemaro Requena

Eddy Reynoso

Jeremy Rivera

Jake Romanski

Josh A. Smith

Teddy Stankiewicz

Any reason why Ockimey was not added to the roster?

Maybe they figured no one would take him? Or don’t care if they do?? Or will try to work out a trade if he is selected?

DD does have his own player evaluations which don’t always agree with Bsseball America or soxprospects.com...

We cut maddox, who had rotator cuff surgery and will miss all of 2019 and curvases, who will play in Korea.

Maddox wasn’t released. He was outrighted to AAA, meaning he cleared waivers and was removed from the 40 man roster. Given his health status, this is not a surprise...

Or they watched ockimey get destroyed in the afl.

That's certainly a possibility, but my guess is he will be traded before the rule 5 draft. His value cannot be that high, since everyone knows he can be taken for nothing in the draft. Maybe we trade Swihart, Ockimey and a pitcher for a better pitcher.

It has to be a team that has roster room. How many are there?

There are certainly teams with roster room or else there will be no Rule 5 draft. As for who they are, MLBTR will have an update st some point.

They are probably just going to dangle him. I don’t think his stock is all that high right now and there are probably better players available. If someone takes him, DD has the option of working out a trade then. Sometimes teams are eager to do this because it removes the requirement of keeping him on the roster for a full season and the drafting team can let him develop a bit more in the minors...

I'm sure some team thinks he's better than their 39th or 40th guy on their roster, but that does not mean they are willing to give up much for him. I'm seeing him more as a throw-in with others to slightly improve the return. Hopefully.

[/b]

Probably because Ock is right on that borderline where he's either a little more or a little less than 1 year away from the big leagues, and DD is hedging his bets.

Ockimey isn't even a top 10 prospect in our own severely depleted system. He's an interesting prospect but not a big thumping bat, he's a doubles hitter at a position where people like home runs, and he struggled at the end of last year against AAA pitching.

I think it's fair to gamble on him slipping under peoples' radars.

To put it another way, if we find ourselves with problems at first base, the first guy they're going to call up is Michael Chavis. Depending on how things go, the second guy might be Bobby dalbec.

Ockimey is just not massively important to this team. His ceiling is Lyle Overbay. Not chopped liver, but not something you go out of your way for either. I wouldn't be too shocked to see him traded to fill some small need before the offseason is over, whether or not he's claimed.

If we resign eovaldi, who gets booted off the 40 man roster?

I think we're at 39 now, but if we need to boot (or trade) someone, this is my list...

1) Marco Hernandez

2) Chandler Shepherd

3) Robby Scott

4) Blake Swihart (out of options)

5) Sam Travis

6) Thornburg (doubtful)
