I think Cora held his nose when he went to Kelly tonight. He has to see if he can carry him on the post season roster. He gave him enough rope to hang himself without costing us the game.

That's basically the way I saw last night during the game. I see three big problems with Kelly. The obvious one is command of his pitches, and lately it's just the two--fast ball and knuckle curve. Another seems to be the sheer hitability of his fast ball, which comes in at 97 to 100 mph and sometimes more. If the 100 mph fast ball is in the strike zone, opposing hitters are smacking it. It is possible he is telegraphing his pitches, but I'm sure--since this has been going on awhile--that the pitching coach, et al, are checking that thoroughly. Finally there's the confidence issue because I think his is shot.

Kimmi quoted Price as saying his season turned around when he started throwing a cut fastball, but apparently this version had/has a little more bite to it. Maybe that would help Kelly.

But right now it's very hard to see Kelly making the postseason roster.

If I'm an opposing hitter, I just wait on Kelly's fastball. It's straight, so if it looks good out of his hand you're just going to let it rip. He has little to no control over his offspeed pitches so there's no reason to ever swing at them.

perhaps we need JK to drill a Yankee batter in our next series with them. he went on an absolute tear after that dustup early in the year.

Kelly 4/11 - 5/29:

0.42 ERA 1.91 FIP 92.9 LOB% 9.97 k/9 2.08 bb/9 21.2 IP

5/30 on:

6.11 ERA 4.66 FIP 64.5 LOB% 8.66 k/9 5.09 bb/9 35.1 IP

Ghastly... This is the worst stretch of his career.

He's a disappointing little bastard like Buchholz.

the dustup effect would be perfect right now to get him dealing through the end of October. pinstripes in crosshairs NOW!

This is a viable idea.

Just do it.
