So start with a list of the big spenders who will clearly have an opening at closer next year. That would be a little more scientific than just talking about 'fools errands'.

 

I'm pretty sure DD loves Kimbrel and is giving this a lot of attention anyway.

 

Dombrowski will do his best to retain Kimbrel, I have no doubt.

 

At the same time, he is looking for closer type relievers who are signed past this season, as a possible replacement for Kimbrel. I think that Dombrowski also has the sense that Kimbrel will be too expensive.

Let Kimbrell walk via free agency and sign K.Herrera. The Red Sox save money (Herrera will come cheaper than Kimbrell), obtain a younger player (Herrera is 19 months younger than Kimbrel), and obtain a draft pick for Kimbrel. Herrera will not require draft compensation.

 

Herrera keeps the closer seat warm for a few years until Feltman is ready to take over.

It's a reasonable idea, but Herrera's numbers have actually been quite erratic the last 2 seasons. He has pitched like crap since the trade to Washington. It's only 10.2 innings, but it's something to keep an eye on.

Herrera is a shaky case. Herrera is down over 1.5mph from his peak, but his slider speed is WAY down, from his peak at 88mph down to 80.8mph. This has caused his K rate to plummet and his FIP to rise near 4 for the past 2 seasons. Now he is coming off a serious injury to his foot.
