That's one of the things I don't understand about this team. WTF happened to Blake Swihart? In 2015 he was good enough to contend for a catching spot with the Sox and now he's toast. What happened?

Injury and no playing time. There are so many players that get caught in that cycle. That LF injury was the last nail in his coffin at least as a Red Sox player. I would say that for every Devers there are three or four guys at least that get banged out of baseball by the system, can't even really play minor league ball for very long. It is brutal and it is a brutally hard game to play. Kinda' looks easy cause its not NBA guys skying or NFL guys pounding the crap out of each other or NHL guys also pounding the crap out of each other. But given the multiple talents it takes just to get on the field, and the ridiculous amount of talent it takes to hit at this level, I am not sure there is a harder team game to play and stay in it without being banged out by something or just ground to dust. Probably neck and neck with Soccer for toughest team sports to play at a high level for any period of time worth talking about.

Swi probably gets one last shot to recover his career someplace.

You're always cranky. Nice try.

Been meaning to ask. Seemed liked you have been to a ton of games this year, something change? Hate to admit it, but I'm feeling some jealousy. You retired people make me ill.

The funny thing about retirement is that I am busier than ever before. My friends who retired before me told me that would be the case, but I had to live it for myself to understand what they meant.

Beni did get a hit tonight, not a slump buster but came at a good time. But that sure looks like one tired young man who will enjoy the day off tomorrow , especially with a morning game scheduled.

What did they mean? I picture if you have a positive outlook in life and enjoy doing things and still feel like you can learn and things, retirement would be a good thing for all of us?

What it means is you have few things that you must do, and you have all day to do them or whatever you want to do, so you are constantly running around doing stuff or watching the Red Sox

I hope you're right. I know this topic has been beaten to death here and it's not my intention to start it up again, but I don't think he got a fair shake with the Sox. Once the Sox acquired Sandy Leon they treated Swihart as if he was expendable....but they decided to keep him around in case one of the catchers got injured. That along with the fact that he has no options left has kept him from having a chance to rebuild his career with another team.

I hope they cut him loose - soon.

Just for the fact that he came up too early, managed to catch the rotation for a season, and in no way in my mind gave up or any indication bitched about lack of seasoning. I hope the dude does well somewhere, or anywhere.

Bad news for all my fans out there. I won't be able to participate in tomorrow morning's game thread because of a prior commitment. I know it's heartbreaking, but I'll be back for the following game. However, I will be tivoing the win tomorrow.

Exactly what an alien would say when their rocketship left to go get supplies for an extended stay on earth. Safe travels and navigate around the blackholes.

SoxHop, I didn't know you cared.

It will be 8:05 in the PDT but that's ok, the win will be booked before lunch. Nats about to dive below .500 and become sellers in the great July roster swap.

Absolutely right. What Swi missed when that LF injury took him is the playing time and opportunity he would have had to be around guys that know what it takes, how much dedication you have to pile on top of enormous talent to play baseball at that level. Just the worst possible timing for Swi.

Look at JD. Struggled, cut, released for God sake but got back into the game at a time when he could be around players that could help him learn how dedicated he had to be. How much time you have to put in on top of all that talent and JD is the result. JD is half dedication and half talent. Guys like Mookie are massive talents....just ridiculously talented which is why comparisons between Mookie and Beni are just unfair to Beni. Devers is closer to Mookie than Beni is believe it or not and Devers is not really all that close.

Who gets the win ? I say D. Price because he needs it for his rep. But Workman earns the W. Edited by vegasbob

You start to fill up your days with things that you want to do. When you are working, most of your time is devoted to the job and there is a tendency to put off things that you really enjoy. Once freed up from the job, you realize that there are so many things that you want to do, and there isn't any excuse not to do them.

I don't think retirement is for everyone. Some people don't have interests outside of their job. Their job gives purpose to their lives. They have a tough time adjusting to retirement. Also, people who love and live their jobs shouldn't retire.

Well put, every word of it. The only problem I'm having in my retirement is that while in the past I didn't have time to do my job + everything I wanted to do, now I don't have time to do all the things I want to do! It seems like my bucket list gets bigger every year. I've now decided that I need to live to be 150 to fit it all in.

Done. Probably too much so, but it feels like a loquacious 4th.
