The Boston #RedSox today acquired 1B/OF Steve Pearce and cash considerations from the Toronto Blue Jays in exchange for minor league INF Santiago Espinal.

 

 

He's got about 20 HR power and bats RH'd.

 

Career splits:

 

.840 vs LHPs

.738 vs RHPs

 

He's at .866 vs LHPs since 2014.

 

Just what we needed.

 

He'll help Moreland out at 1B and maybe platoon there, and he can play the OF vs tough lefties. He can also DH, when needed.

 

He's still owed over $3M this year, so we'll be over the max limit, unless we dump salary somewhere else.

He can play 2nd we just picked Up Bphill also and we have Nuney ??? That's a lot of insurance for multiple positions LF Second 1b DH ....maybe BP is our pokey Reese late inning guy .I think there's another shoe dropping .Likely hearing Pedey on shelf the rest of 18 or retiring ?or we are going for a huge trade ?

It seems B. Phillips was signed to add depth to the 2nd base position in case either Holt or Nunez got injured. I doubt Phillips gets brought up unless an injury occurs.

Yeah me also .Holt is a great teammate and he's done really well this year .I think Swihart is getting packaged along with Beeks for BP arm .The Os and The Jays are about to have fire sales .

If we are going to get a RP'er, we may go even farther over.

 

I wonder, if we might look to trade Pom, when he returns or who else?

Pedey has given this team everything he's had he's deserving of the time to shut it down and evaluate if he can even play every day now .Im not ashamed to say I will shed tears when he's gone .Special player Redsox to the core of him .

It's a well thought out post like always Moon ...there's 1 caveat .Dealing Dave has his sights set this year .Moon could it be Abreu ? He's salivated over this player for years .?..Realmutto ? Or does he shock the world and get Degrom or Manny ? ....is Benny on the Block ? He would have to be for these players .Scooter ?

Even if Pearce "can" play 2B, that is not something I think anyone wants. He's only played 33 games there and isn't a good fielder anyway. I don't have much hope Pedroia returns at all this season, but this move doesn't increase or decrease my hopes for him returning. To me this had more to do with the team struggling against LHP, and Pearce hitting RHP. He can fill in the OF/DH spot for JBJ, or 1B for Moreland vs LHP. He's a good get IMO, but this has nothing to do with Pedroia.

Phillips fielding has been going down hill past few years, we'd be better of having Lin just be the late inning defensive replacement guy if thats what were looking for.. I love Brandon Phillips, in his prime he was one of my favorite players, but I honestly doubt he makes an impact for us. I think he's just an emergency depth signing, and a very good one at that, but unlikely to make much of an impact (if any).

You could be right ? I could be right but something tells me this is just the start .I don't think a BP arm is getting it done this year .Dave has bigger fish to fry .

I doubt it. I think this move is because we didn't have RHH bench bat and have been struggling vs LHP. It's a weakness, why not address it? It doesn't have to indicate anything about any specific player.
