It's one thing to debate the hall of fame, but each team determines their own standards for team-specific honors. The fact that Red Sox fans of all people are commenting on what numbers the Yankees should and shouldn't retire is really stupid.

It's not stupid. We have no say in what other teams do (or our own team for that matter), but that has never stopped us from voicing our opinions on the topic anyway. Isn't that the purpose of message boards?

Intangibles!

Posada had +5 leadership, +5 "True Yankee pinstripes", and +5 Jeter-like intangibles. A recipe for enshrinement!

Seriously though, why is this an issue?

No real issue. Just something to debate to pass the long, cold, dark hours known as the offseason.

That's the point: Who cares? Let teams induct whoever they think is worthy. This thread is just flame-bait for Yankee super-homers, which means an immediate reaction from you brah. Lol. Edited by User Name?

Let's turn this one a little. Who gets their number retired in your head for the sox from their recent run of rings?

Pedro and Papi. Pedroia only if he gets in HOF.

Your secretary must be extra annoying today. What's the harm in this discussion? It's certainly far from a flamewar.

But dad, I'm trying to make fun of the Yankees fan!

Alright, this is a fine topic of discussion and i was just trying to troll Jacko.

Posada and Bernie both deserve to get their numbers retired, but AP has the steroid stigma over him and shouldn't get in IMO because he wasn't good enough to overcome it either ways.

Manny talked himself out of the Sox HOF. Papi should get in, even with the PED cloud (unconfirmed anyways) because he's been one of the greatest Sox hitters ever, part of three championships after the WS drought, and a model citizen.

Pedro is a no-questions asked entry.

After that, the water gets a little muddy, but Pedroia's the most likely candidate.

Honestly, the only recent NYY numbers that should be retired are Jeter and Rivera. Retiring Posada is basically retiring Varitek. But if NY wants to let everyone into their memeorial garden, may as well erect a Brosius statue and let everyone have a plaque. Blue ribbons for everyone! You are all special snowflakes!

Contributions to all of those championships plus a 121 career OPS+ really enhance Posada's case though. His D may have been weak, but the offensive numbers are pretty extraordinary.

I'm just amazed at how personally Jacko takes it, even if he is a Yankees fan.

"Don't be hypocrites guys, or I'll cry"- Jacksonianmarch

Well, Jacko's mistake is being a Yankees fan to begin with.

Outside of that, I can't fault him for defending his team. Not that there's always merit to his defense, but as fans, that's what we do. We're all homers to a certain extent. Just don't be hypocritical about it, and say that something is okay for the Yankees, but then not okay for the Sox.

To me, Posada is the NYY Pedroia. If he gets into the HOF, his number should be retired.

If you're good enough for serious HOF consideration, you're good enough for a team (if you've played your entire career for said team) to retire your number. IMO, team Hall of Fames are just a notch below (requirement wise) of the actual Hall of Fame.

Unless you're a Yankee fan, who cares what numbers they retire?

I'm so sorry to disappoint you by starting the topic. I'll tell ESPN that you'd like them to stop creating headlines for any team outside of Boston. They might not understand why somebody with a user name of the Yankee CFer is making the request, but I'll let them know anyway.

One thing I loved about Posada was the opponent could always rely on Jorgie to have a passed ball at a crucial time.

Have I mentioned that I like you?

Aww shucks, Kimmi. I just can't get out of my head the vision of Posada running to the back stop to pick up a pitch he just flubbed.

You're right. I have to spend more time watching reruns of Two and a half Men.

To me:

Retiring Number > HOF

Boggs is in the HOF but I wouldn't retire his number.

Because he walked away from the Sox? Because he was selfish or cheated on his wife? Had chicken every day? I didn't like him as a person or his me-first attitude, but it's hard to argue with the numbers he put up and how hard he worked on his defense.

Well I actually see it the other way around. Had Boggs played his entire career with the Sox, you'd probably have a different opinion about his numbers. Also, one thing that really helps Posada out is being one of the best-hitting "catchers" in baseball history, being in the top-15 in several Yankee career appearance categories in the leaderboards, and of course, the rings.

Because he signed a contract with the TBDR's that would put a DR hat on his HOF plaque. He was just a guy who put up numbers. He left Boston to win a WS in NY. Thirteen players have worn his number since he left and no one cared. More people cared when Manny used Dewey's number.

Clemens' number is basically retired already as no one has worn it since. Same with Pedro.

Didn't help Piazza get in the HOF.

You know the real reason. Piazza, like Bagwell, is a suspected steroid user. If you dig around for a bit you'll see voting members to the HOF flat out condemn those two specifically because of a strong link to steroid use.

There is no strong link, just bachne.

I'm glad that you mentioned the bold part.

Boggs never seems to get credit for making himself into a Gold Glove caliber 3rd baseman.

Yeah, he was a puke, I guess. But he was a well rounded player never the less.

Well "strong link" to them. There's no actual evidence that he or Bagwell did 'roids.

Makes me wonder about Papi going to the HOF.

He too has been "linked" to possible PED use. But there is no evidence that he did anything in violation of the rules in place when he played.

I say that he is a HOFer. Especially after he eclipses the "required" threshold of 500 HR for a power hitter.
