Ellsbury II -- not

Ellsbury is perhaps the best rounded player we've ever had. Can hit, can steal, can execute a bunt, and is clutch. Bradley seems to have just 1 tool at this time, catching fly balls.

And in true Red Sox stile, they let the Yankees take him from us.

Easy on the hyperbole.

If you were the Red Sox GM, would you have paid 153 million for him?

Why do we have this Willie Harris clone, because of his versatility in that there are several positions and things that he does poorly?

Hahahahaha!!!

So the Red Sox are never going to pay market prices for FA or something?

I was surprised to see Gray exit the game so early. I thought "we got'em now!"

NOPE!

On the bright side, Lackey pitched well again. To bad it was a wasted effort.

May I point out that while this game did not end well, the Sox took the series. Now clobber the Reds!

To keep him out of the hands of the Yankees, yes. If it was him going to any other team, no.

This is a dumb thing to say. 153 million for Ellsbury was not market price, it was a massive overpay. And all this crying for "market price" is what lead to the Crawford et al contract. Let them play it smart.

Think about this for a second: Do you think that's a sound business model? That sounds like a recipe for disaster to me. Ben would be an idiot to start overpaying FA's to keep them from the Yankees. Besides, Ellsbury not being here is not the reason they're losing. The futility with RISP is a team-wide thing, so let's stop the chicken-s*** reactions.

Ryan Dempster hadn't retired when Ellsbury signed with NYY. Ellsbury would have pushed them over the luxury tax, which ownership is not going to do.

I mean, I wish that Mike Trout was our CF, but that's all it remains. A wish. You f***ing people need to stop hemorrhaging angst over a scenario that never was going to happen.

I know that spending a lot of money got the Red Sox in a lot of financial mess. They really are lucky that they had a team that is so mentally handicapped, to take all of that money and players off the Red Sox hands.

But, I think in this situation, over spending on Ellsbury wouldn’t have been all too bad of a thing. At least we know he can produce in Boston. We didn’t know that when we signed Carl Crawford. Yes, it would have put a lot of money on the books for a while. But, there are a lot more positives than negatives, in my opinion.

This doesn't make any sense at all. Overspending on a player whose main attribute is speed and has proven to be fragile over the years can't be justified just to keep him away from the Yankees. He's into month one of his contract. Your thinking is so short-sighted right now it's not even funny.

People can't have it both ways. They want sustained success but they also want the Sox to blow their load irresponsibly on Free Agents just to keep them away from the Yankees. That's not how it works.

Ellsbury is a better player than JBJ, but that's expected. He has played at a ML level longer than JBJ and has proven more than him. However, that doesn't mean every time JBJ plays bad, we need to bring up Ellsbury. This is going to be like the Papelbon situation. This place went f***ing nuts went Papelbon left, but didn't even give the Red Sox a chance without him. We ended up finding Koji, and now people wouldn't even dare mention Papelbon name now. This will be the same exact thing. JBJ is very talented, he just needs some work. Ellsbury has played one month for the Yankees. He could end up having a bad career with NY, so please stop acting like Ellsbury is the Red Sox savior. I know people tend to get butthurt over posts, but this is me addressing all of talksox. Not just directed at one poster, so save the tears.

Regardless, losing Ellsbury was a major loss.

Well thanks for stating the obvious. I miss Ells too, but I'm not going to complain and bring him up when our CF doesn't play good. What comes out of it? Ells is gone, people need to forget about him and move on.

He was more than just a speed guy. He got on base a lot and drove in a good share of runs.

I would just like to see more consistency out of JBJ. Every time he looks like he might be turning into a decent player, he starts to play like crap again. Until I see him turn into a consistently good player, I will be skeptical of his ability to become a Major League player.

Career .352 OBP. That is decent, not great. Drove in no more than 60 every year other than the fluke 2011 season. Look, i'm not trying to s*** on Ellsbury here, he's a good player, but the contract is stupid. Not as stupid for the Yanks because they can't absorb it, but you can be certain that had he signed that deal here, the Red Sox wouldn't have been as likely to be able to absorb the back-end of the contract. The whining about Ellsbury is unfounded anyway. He's one month into his Yankee career, and JBJ is one month into his career period. Let's wait just a teeny bit.

He has 211 plate appearances. That is a third of a season. Are you serious?

Yes, I am. I'm not about to give the keys to centerfield to this kid. I need to see him play more before I kiss the ground the kid walks on; like a lot of people seem to have been doing ever since he had that one good spring training.

Well they gotta play him. In general, the idea that JBJ/lack of Ellsbury is all that plagues this team is unfounded and, quite frankly, pretty damn silly. They have a sub-700 OPS as a team with RISP and men on. It's a team-wide thing.

I agree they have to play him. He needs to be playing every day. But, I think he should be playing in the Minors, not the Majors. Anyone else with the BA he has, would have been sent down in a hartbeat. The only reason why he is playing in the Majors is because they put all their eggs in two unknown mystery baskets. That being a unproven rookie and a guy who hasn’t played in two years.
