Is pine tar really only used for grip? Like being serious I've played baseball and I've never understand what pinetar actually does?

 

1.) Pine tar is just used to get a better grip on the baseball, something some batters appreciate as it means pitchers will be less wild and less likely to hit batters.

2.)Pine tar does not alter the behavior of the ball the way Vaseline (i.e. spitballs) does.

3.)Everybody is doing it

Alright, thanks. Maybe it's just me but I don't see a huge advantage of using it and I think an ejection seems a bit harsh lol

Either way, Pineda is still dumb for making it that noticeable

 

Especially after all that air play from that last start against the RedSox.
