Keep it going with that mojo!

VA will do lineups, I will do game notes.

Btw, O's are the only AL East team that Sox have a losing record against.

Game time: 7:10 p.m.

TV/radio: NESN / WEEI.

Red Sox vs. Chen: Pedroia 4-10, Middlebrooks 3-9, Ellsbury 2-7, Gomes 1-6, Ortiz 0-6, Ross 1-5, Napoli 1-3, Saltalamacchia 1-3, Victorino 1-3, Nava 2-2.

Orioles vs. Doubront: Jones 2-14, Wieters 1-13, Davis 6-12, Hardy 0-11, McLouth 1-9, Machado 4-8, Markakis 4-7, Valencia 2-4, Flaherty 1-2, Pearce 0-2.

Stat of the Day: The Orioles are 12-4 in their last 16 games at Fenway Park.

Notes: After going 9-10 over a stretch that saw them play 16 of 19 games on the road, the Red Sox open up a nine-game homestand with a three-game set against the Orioles … The Orioles, who’ve lost eight of their past 14, are two games behind Oakland in the wild card race, as they head into a tough stretch against the Sox and then the Yankees … Doubront is still looking for his first win against the Orioles. In four career starts, he’s 0-2 with a 3.28 ERA despite 12.77 strikeouts per nine innings. In his last outing against the Orioles on June 13, he gave up four runs (three earned) on seven hits in 4.2 innings … Chen is 2-1 with a 2.96 ERA in four career starts against the Sox. Three of those came at Fenway Park, where Chen is 1-1 with a 3.44 ERA … After going 15 for 34 with two homers and seven RBIs in his first 11 games since returning to the Sox on Aug. 10, Will Middlebrooks went 1 for 11 in three games against the Dodgers. Still, he’s hitting .356 and slugging .556 since returning … David Ortiz enters the series seven hits shy of 2,000 for his career. He has seven hits in seven games this season against the Orioles, batting .280 with two homers and three RBIs … Jonny Gomes has reached base in each of his past 13 games, going 10 for 40 with three homers and 13 RBIs … Orioles slugger Chris Davis, who leads the league with 46 homers, has hit .303 with eight home runs and 19 RBIs in August.

Not playing Bogaerts against a lefty with pretty extreme splits is incomprehensible.

I could explain away the West Coast starts, I don't understand this one. Seems like XB isn't here to platoon, just observe.

@PeteAbe: Farrell made is clear several times that Bogaerts was called up as a bench player, not to replace Drew. They're not changing SS now.

@bruceallen: NESN says Jerry Remy will be out at least through Labor Day. Eckersley will fill in this series, Jon Rish for the four games following.

Eck is great, but a Rish/Orsillo will mean the games will be on mute.

I understand what Pete Abe is saying, but playing Bogaerts against a tough lefty is not "changing shortstops", its "giving your team the best chance to win".

Oh here's another golden nugget from Farrell (from Brian MacPherson)

Farrell on SS decision: "I'm not going to turn away from Stephen Drew" just based on an opposing pitcher's splits.

wut. Saboteur!!!!

Can't say I'm too surprised. Managers seem to overvalue veterans.

All of you who complain about Fox announcers or NESN announcers or ESPN announcers, I am telling you, go buy a cheap radio and listen to WEEI. Castiglione and O'Brien are wonderful, and when O'Brien is out doing ESPN games Castiglione more than makes up for any deficiencies his cohost might bring.

For me, baseball is best in this order:

1. At the game, duh

2. Radio

3. Talksox GT while using radio

4. Talksox GT while watching TV

5. Just TV

6. Talksox GT while using Gameday

7. Just the TalkSox GT

8. Just Gameday

9. At work, getting news from drunken idiots coming in and giving the incorrect score.

10. On TV with McCarver

Neither one has faced Chen. It doesn't matter if its a lefty or not.

I think his career .100 point OPS split, and his current season .200 OPS split beg to differ.

Just because he's fared a certain way against lefties in the past doesn't mean that will happen here. Either one could be great, awful, or somewhere in between. Drew is the vet, let him play.

I think we should start Aaron Cook tonight. Just because he's fared a certain way against MLB lineups in the past, doesn't mean that it will happen here. Either one could be great, awful, or somewhere in between. Cook is the vet, let him play.

But he's only a rental. It's not like he's under contract for 3 years.

There is a huge difference between the starting pitcher and one of nine batters.

I was trying to point out that it isn't a good idea to ignore evidence because something good might happen.

I agree wholeheartedly. As someone who has spent the majority of my life rooting for the Sox from 1500+ miles away, being able to listen to the games online via the radio broadcast is a godsend. Castiglione is absolutely brilliant as a broadcaster and I enjoy every moment I get to listen to him call games. It's old school and I love it.

Who the hell cares if Stephen Drew is a vet? That's pretty dumb rationale.

They traded Iggy to clear room at SS... for Drew

This is a new pitcher though, so there is no evidence to go off of. Every pitcher is different.

No, they traded a backup SS for a top of the rotation starter. Don't see the problem there.

The evidence is his career -20 wRAA against lefties, and Chen's .648 OPS against lefites. There's enough there to suggest that Drew is completely useless against lefties, and Chen is good at suppressing them.
