So.... what are doing with the bullpen situation?

Koji should close.

Tazawa 7-8th relief ace, ala Bard. He has stranded 11/12 inherited runners.

I think Miller did a little bit to do the same.

Miller is definitely the unsung hero of the game. Later in the season no one will remember anything except Drew, but two K's, one of them of Morneau, with two on and one out in the seventh, was a huge moment in the game.

It says a lot about this team that the game ended the way it did. The 2012 Sox would likely have deflated after going down 4-2, and the first two reaching in the seventh probably could have led to a four-run inning. The 2013 Red Sox said "f*** that" and kept playing. The 2012 Sox would have almost certainly been done after the tying home run in the 9th, instead they put Clay Mortensen out there for three innings, which on paper seems like sending Michael J. Fox in to defuse a bomb, and it worked, the Sox won, and everyone is happy.

f*** every other team. f*** em' all. This is the 2013 Red Sox and they are going to lose some games, but when you beat them, they're going to come right back, beat you, and probably give you a swirly.

....except Texas

They'll play them again, and they won't get swept again. Anyways, when I said "you", I meant the other 29 teams collectively, not any particular team.

However, f*** the Yankees specifically, because the Yankees.

I said last night why take Breslow out? Pitch him in the 9th. Keep Hanrahan warm. Screw the save routine.

Maybe Farrell thinks so, now, too. That's what makes great managers--to know when to go against the grain.

At this point, Farrell should be doubting the wisdom of one reliever per inning. By using 3-4 relievers per game, he depletes his bullpen quickly if he has 3-4 consecutive games with no days off. Combined with two injury-prone closers and other relievers rehabbing, his regimen has resulted in the two Japanese pitchers being overworked. Maybe his best relievers, who were needlessly used in games when they were far behind (8-1 in Texas comes to mind).

Farrell needs to manage the bullpen better.

i think i do agree with this. he is using up the bullpen and this is where arms of Aceves/Doubront would be amazing.

both Doubbie and Aceves could chew up innings in meaningless games, and Tazawa Koji can be used for better games IMO.

and that would mean the 5th starter would be Webster. this should happen if Doubbie keeps failing to go beyond 5 innings, problem is Webster might have the same issue, but then you have Aceves/Doubs to go multiple innings. which currently we only have Mortensen to rely upon.

oh and when is Morales coming back.

Last night was very scary and thank goodness we got a win out of it. The usual suspects who we have been panning all this young season came through for us and it couldn't have come at a better time. Let's face it, though, the bullpen has been weakened by those two injuries and we may need a couple of arms lickity split. I hate it to be Aceves but Farrell may not have a choice in the matter. We simply need help and I would much rather have Alfredo up than Bard. I wonder if Ace's attitude would be better this time around. Or am I kidding myself?

They have plenty of arms, even with the injuries, but you can't throw 'em out there 1 per inning losing 8-1, or even 5-1. Especially if you're playing 7 games in 7 days. You look up in a 4-3 or 4-4 game, you got nobody good when you need them.

How did Farrell get to this? Well, most all managers have the same regimen these days. 3-4 bullpen guys per game. But a few of them are a bit more flexible than that. They will throw a guy out there for 2-3 innings if he's going good--to save the bullpen. Bochy, Showalter, Madden. Some of the better managers.

That's the way it used to be in baseball, when long relief was a reality and starters had to earn starting through the bullpen. That's not the way the Red Sox do things anymore, to their detriment.

This is a great post just because you actually managed to use the term "lickity split" in a sentence.

The tweeteybird says Webster is at Fenway, will probably start Wed. Farrell says Tazawa is closing for now.

I would have preferred Koji as the temporary closer but it's Farrell's decision and it is what it is. If we can get Webster pitching up to his so-called potential and natural ability we may have something there for this season. What I like about his being called up is the possibility of having Doubrant becoming a long man in the bullpen, if not now then very soon because he seems incapable of going deep as a starter. Maybe he can eat up innings in a relief role. I'd rather seem him pitch four or five innings out of the bullpen than see him try to endure for that many as a starter. Every time he starts it seems we go through our bullpen.
