Dating back to last September 1, here's what the Red Sox' record has been:

 

76-113, for a robust winning percentage of .402

 

This is not a small sample size. This is what this team has become - one of the very worst in all of the major leagues.

 

It's hard to believe, considering that as of August 31, 2011, they were the best team in baseball.

For one thing ya' gotta' wonder if we had a good pitching coach last year that was just ignored into irrelevance. Would not surprise me. There is so much to fix here. I don't at all expect a fast turnaround and don't even think it is remotely realistic. Maybe an incredible helping of luck might result in a fast turn but I think that would actually be the largest component of any fast turn.

This from Tony Lee. The fact that the 04 team's record was the opposite is quite the coincidence.

Remy's comments were very interesting because when you think about it, every team's hitters have looked very comfortable standing in against the Sox pitchers. That is in fact likely behind the fact that not only have hitters hit so many HR's off the Sox but so many long HR's. Home plate became a launch pad the last couple of seasons. While we muse about what the Sox have for pitching now, the fact is most of those launch pad pitchers are still here. Not terribly encouraging.

Major problems for sure. There is very little pitching to build from at this point. Lester needs a complete overhaul, Buch is well Buch, not sure what you have really from one start to the next, Lackey is a multipitch pitcher...tougher to come back from TJ, and then what...Felix???....Frankie????....Cook should never take the mound as a Sox hurler again.

 

How do you go from this to a contending pitching staff.....time and good work.....not going to happen overnight...sorry to disappoint those that want to think the Sox have a legitimate shot to return to legitimacy in one off season but it is not going to happen. There is almost nothing here for starting pitching to build from at least in as short a time frame as one off season.

 

2014 maybe, 2015 surely if management and FO don't stumble and bumble their way their as they have since at least before the 2010 season.

You know, I said that after last year when Lackey and his 6.41 era took the hill 28 times. I thought that the Sox' rotation would have to get better, almost by default.

Buchholz: 4.56 era, 1.33 whip

Doubront: 4.86 era, 1.45 whip

Beckett: 5.23 era, 1.33 whip

Cook: 5.65 era, 1.47 whip

Matsuzaka: 8.28 era, 1.71 whip

Bard: 6.22 era, 1.74 whip

Aceves: 5.36 era, 1.32 whip

Melancon: 6.20 era, 1.27 whip

Bailey: 7.04 era, 1.89 whip

Padilla: 4.50 era, 1.48 whip

 

I mean, holy crap. That's a gigantic list of colossal suck right there. The only guys who ended up having even somewhat decent seasons were:

 

Atchison: 1.58 era, 0.99 whip

Miller: 3.35 era, 1.19 whip

Morales: 3.77 era, 1.23 whip

Tazawa: 1.47 era, 0.98 whip

Mortensen: 3.21 era, 1.21 whip

Albers: 2.29 era, 1.14 whip

Breslow: 2.79 era, 1.09 whip

Hill: 1.83 era, 1.42 whip

 

No wonder the Sox only won 69 games.

Well at least next year can't get any worse. I really hope it doesn't.

Theo took a Cub team with 91 losses and followed that up with 101 losses. Rich Kotite's Jets followed a 3-13 season with. 1-15 record, so things can get worse. They have to take action and be aggressive to turn things around. I am hearing that they have money, but they are going to be smart about spending it. Well, it's always a good idea to spend smartly, but statements like that convey to me that they will sit back to see how the market develops rather than taking the initiative. That will not work. Great bargains don't fall through the cracks. 29 other teams are pursuing value players. If they have a reactive approach instead of a proactive approach, they will be headed for more failure. Cherries strikes me as too deliberate and afraid to make a decision. I am not expecting a lot. Hopefully, I am underestimating him.

What a clustersf*** that rotation was. Everyone has issues with control, pitch count, serving up gopher ball one after another. It's like a contagious disease has spread since Lackey's arrival. We also have the doubled chin returning next year to look forward to. What fun 2013 is already shaping up to be.
