Punto and Melancon. Both of them contribute absolutely nothing to the team. Saltalamacchia isn't great but he is, at least, leading the team in home runs, so he's giving us something. The number of people who have set foot on the Moon is greater than the number of Punto's XBH for the season.

Saves them over $100 mil to throw at Ells

They need to drop Ells in the order. He no longer is a leadoff batter. Doesn't get enough walks. 0-5 today. If Crawford continues to hit, Ells will be dealt in the offseason. for sure.

There's the season, and then the franchise.

I'd say Beckett, just because I think Crawford can contribute more in the future years. I'd force Crawford to get his damn surgery now so that he'd be fully recovered earlier.

I think there are 3 kinds of players we can choose.

1. Players that are completely useless/redundant/suck. ie: Punto and to a lesser extent Melancon. While I agree they suck, losing Punto doesn't save much money or generate many wins. His contract will be up after next season anyway.

2. Players with large contracts. This will help the franchise the most. Crawford would be the biggest example, Gonzalez (not that he'd be chosen) as well as Beckett/Lackey are also good choices.

3. Players that are toxic to the lockerroom. There is some overlap, but Beckett/Lackey suck and are complete *******s. Youkilis would also be in this category.

As a whole, I vote Beckett just because he's the biggest ******* on the team, is owed more money than Lackey, and Lackey has a year at the league minimum and is 500K/year cheaper in the next 2 years. One more of those can afford Nick Punto. :)

If you're thinking contract then yes that makes sense because that contract was absolutely horrible. I was leaning more towards the "who you can't stand on the team and want to see leave"

There are lots of things I don't like....

The only thing that makes this a tough choice is that the Crawford contract is such a disaster...if I were to pick Crawford it would not be a reflection on the player...though I just think he is the wrong player for this team even if fully healthy and playing at his best

However, Beckett and Lackey are so bad on all fronts that even with the albatross that is Crawford's contract...either Beckett or Lackey beat out Crawford by miles.

There is a natural tendency to look to a guy like Beckett for leadership by the other staff guys even when he appears to completely resist that role. I simply do not think the staff will ever look at Lackey that way. So Lackey in my view should only hurt them one way...when on the mound...how he pitches and how he reacts to issues like errors by his teammates.

That said, you could actually take the view that the Sox really started going downhill with the arrival of Lackey.

I think I would take a practical view here. Beckett will be very hard to get rid of yet he is poison. Lackey is hard to get rid of right now but I actually think he could be moved once he starts pitching again. So, I pick Beckett mainly because the question is who would I eliminate....almost a free pass to get rid of an *******. I take Beckett because I think ultimately the Sox will be able to move Lackey.

Dicekettackey

Nice one wyo.....has a nice ring to it. Dicekettackey traded today for a bag a bolts and a mangy flea bitten dog.

Would surely be nice to get Dicekettackey off our team as he sounds like the guy of guy that would give up back to back three run homers by successive hitters....a damn hard thing to do but right up Dicekettackey's alley.:D:D

Man I am not far off from watching games in Fenway. Sucks there is not a pitcher I am real excited to see.I guess Morales would be about the only guy I'd be excited to see throw, maybe Dubront.

Not Dice K's so much because that posting fee doesn't even count, thats gone, and he doesn't have much time left anyways. Same with Lackey and Beckett, minus the posting fee thing. Crawford is the one we're stuck with. If I could pick one or two to just not have signed, it would be Lackey and Crawford.

Ha. Abraham just tweeted that Lav was named the best defensive catcher in the International League.

So the guy is strong defensively and he sits in the minors while they are carrying Shoppach. Ben and the Katzenjammer FO kids strike again.

Poll by IL managers. Also named best defensive: Anderson, 1B; Ciriaco, 2B; Iggy, SS.

Too bad the KJ kids don't value defense.

Crawford. Not worth the $142M. Not even close.

Hey. Don't knock the guy. He's been looking like a decent $5-10 mil player lately.

Improvement over last year. Too bad the season's almost over.

I think Leter is thru. The Sox should give him until the end of the season to get his act back together, but if he cannot, they need to move on from him. I know that Wins and Losses are not the best measure of a pitcher, but any pitcher with a 5-10 record on a team that scores the most runs in the league is unfathomable. The Sox are 8-15 in his starts-- again, this is unfathomable. I don't think he can be salvaged. He's circling the drain. The Sox need to go in a different direction.

I was on the fence adding Lester as part of the beast. I fear he may be done but still hold a little hope for him.... very little.

I think I'd like to get rid of McClure too. I have no idea how much of the suckfest he's responsible for, but he ain't exactly performing magic, as far as I can see.

So many Sox players...especially pitchers have turned out to be head cases:

Lackey, Mr. treats his teammates and coaches like s***, apologizes the next day and does it again! Appears to be the very definition of misery loves company as well

Beckett, Mr. finding a new place for baseball in his list of priorities....somewhere a few rungs down from his golf game

Padilla, known head case goes out there and proves it every time he faces the Yankees at least

Lester, basically pitches decent to mediocre but then allows a few bad calls from the ump to turn mediocre into downright terrible...much like Lackey, seems to understand this is a big problem but is helpless to do anything about it...staggering

Bard, the very mention of his name should be enough

Aceves, has gone from having a few idiosyncrasies on the mound to having some real problems it appears with coaches, teammates, umps, you name it

What is the common link between them all....when you have little perspective on what you are doing as it relates to the team you play for you begin to indulge you oddities. Why not...everybody else is doing it.

The pitchers are easily the center piece of the least likable Red Sox team I have ever laid eyes on.

Beckett, Lackey, Lester, Punto, Aviles (We have better options at short, right?) Melancon, Salty, Crawford, Dice K, McClure, and Valentine.

I feel we should also think about who they should have kept that they didn't keep..
