and Beckett is likely headed to the DL and Ortiz is not as yet coming off the DL and the Sox have got to get past all the teams above them to either challenge for the division or even the WC.

However if they can get past tonight, the Twins come in for four games. So it could be a nine game win streak that quickly although on top of their other foibles and maladies, they have shown about as much killer instinct as puppy dog....a toy puppy dog for that matter.

I had kept hoping they would look at games with chump teams in the first half as opportunities to make hay and the Sox basically were sleep walking through most of them...and that had nothing to do with injuries. With the exception of Ortiz the guys that were penciled into that lineup from the start were doing most of the sleep walking.

Dang. I'd be pissed if I were the Tigers, having the game called with the bases juiced, down 3.

But, they had 2 outs with Omar Infante up, so it's not like they can be all that pissed. Sox would have almost certainly escaped with the lead regardless.

Either way, it's a winning streak, and the Yanks are on a 4 game skid. We're now only 7.5 back in the East, 3.5 back in the WC.

For all of those who said the East is decided, just remember that the Yanks are 3-9 in their last 12 against the A's, Mariners, Sox, and Orioles.

There is a lot of baseball left.

While it always makes me happy when the Yankees lose, it doesn't help us when they are playing teams that are ahead of us. We have too many teams to climb over. Once they start playing each other, it will be very difficult to pick up ground. We need to win 8 of 10 now and hope the Yankees can help us by beating the teams in front of us. The division is not realistic for us. Even if the Yankees collapse, it would be Tampa or the O's that would overtake them. We need to catch those teams and the A's, Angels and White Sox.

I dont want to get my hopes up.. but it makes me happy nonetheless.

However if Beckett goes to the DL we get Morales back in the SP.. was it a huge mistake to get Bedard instead of Milwood last year.. hell yes.

The Sox had both. They just didn't give Milwood a chance.

Look, even I have to say, it is only a few games that seperate us from everyone else in the division right now other than the yankoffs. I would actually say that if one of the other teams could catch up in case the yankoffs pull an epic collapse (which is within the realm of possibility), the Sox stand just as good if not a better chance than the O's or Rays.

Just because we are tightly packed doesn't mean that it will be easy to jump over the other teams. There are a lot of them and they will be playing each other in many of their remaining games, making it difficult to gain ground for us. The Sox will have to play at a very high winning percentage to jump over all of them.

Yeah, but we have all witnessed a team losing 4 or 5 in a row while a team below it wins 4 or 5 in a row, things can change pretty fast sometimes without any kind of long term winning percentage increase.

If you are chasing 2 teams that are playing each other and one loses 4 in a row, the other one would be winning 4 in a row. If you win 4 in a row, you'll pick up a lot of ground on 1 team, but you'll just be staying pace with the other team. Chasing 4 or 5 teams makes things even more difficult.
