Ciriaco or Punto?

Pretty easy question. Once Pedey comes back from the DL, who stays on as the backup/utility infielder?

 

Pokey, I mean Pedro is 10/12 with a few RBI's since coming up. Even though he had a hot spring training, he never got the chance to play on the big league squad and he's made the most of the oppurtunity with a few clutch hits that have won us 2 games so far.

 

Punto had a slow start, but since June 1: .300/.368/.444, 4 SB. He can play more positions and is reportedly a great clubhouse presence.

 

The last option probably means cut Lillibridge.

Hm. Obviously it would have to be Nava or Ross. Out of those choices I'd say Nava.

Oh yeah, I didn't even think of that. I guess I just assumed that they'd cut an outfielder to make room for another outfielder. It could be a pitcher.

Sweeney gets traded, or Ciriaco/Gomez are demoted.

There are four spots occupied by Gomez, Lillibridge, Punto, and Ciricao. Cut two of those guys, and make an outfield of Crawford/Ells/Nava/Ross/Sweeney. We've seen 5 outfielders before. The real problem comes when Pods is coming back.

He'd have more use if he could play more than LF.

 

With CC and Ells back, there is little use for his skill set.

Pods has probably shown enough to be a trade piece even at his age. Maybe the Sox put together a bushel basket of their abundance pieces in some sort of three way deal that moves them off to places where they can be more useful in return for getting something the Sox can use.

 

I would bet that regardless of what or how many the Sox will have to cough up at least one prospect that will hurt to get back anything that will help.

 

That should be enough though to allow LL to claim to have made good on his statement that the Sox would be aggressive players at the deadline.
