Good to see Aviles get a day off. He has been slumping for about a month now. Wish Gonzalez and Youkilis could sit too. Can Beckett play 1B?

I hope Zimmerman pitches like he did in the first inning. Lester came back in his 2nd and pitched somewhat better but was still up in the zone...had more on the ball.

We should have done more with Zimmerman in the 1st. Hope he stays up in the zone for us in his 2nd.

Good point kaps. Lester spends so much grimacing and frowning and glaring that his face is going to take a permanent set that way.

yep that has been the story so far, he just is spending too much time thinking about what if that ball was a strike and lets the game get away way too often.

that is what seperates you from the creme de la creme. you dont let few bad pitches affect the outcome of the game.

and if we are seeing it i hope the pitching coach sees it too. Lester needs to dial it down a little. as the captain Varitek said and preached 1 pitch at a time. cant get ahead of your selves and start over thinking..

Beckett as a DH.. have Papi at 1st and Gonzo in OF.. seems like Gonzo has good days at batting if he plays OF..

Oh Christ...here we go again....our guys just get planted on the bases where they land and that is just that.

Nats get one hit = 1 run.

nice at bat WMB.....should have taken strike 1 regardless of it being a strike.....should have taken strike 2 to right field...should not have swung at strike 3 at all.

"strike 2" was 4 inches outside. That was a joke of a strike.

or if our hitters approached their plate appearances based on what we needed.....Strike 2 to WMB was a great pitch to take to right field...could have just stuck the head of the bat out there....got to have the attitude that I can get my team back even and let the next guy try to get you ahead....I am so sick of this s***.

Lose this game and the Red Sox will fall to SIX GAMES behind the Rays' date=' who are up 4-0 already.[/quote']

The Sox were 8 back on May 10th.

Then they were 3 back on June 5th.

6 games out hardly punts the season.

No, the season is not over. But if we go to six out its slipping away. Too many good teams to leapfrog over and no real progress in doing it.

As we know' date=' six games between the Red Sox and Rays is insurmountable.[/quote']

Thats a lot of games to make up against a very good team. All in all, I would rather be six games up.

As I have said in other posts, it is the month on the whole that has me worried. I have not looked forward to this one at all. Tough games in the division, tough games in the league, tough inter-league games to play.

This month is a real test.

I guess I don't understand how people can be bleak about the Sox when they have Ells, Craw, and Ross returning soon.

I keep telling you SFF: because our pitching is not up to snuff.

Miami - Chicago - Miami. The Marlins have lost 5 straight, and are losing right now. Could be a few series that the Sox can win and build on.

The other reason at least I don't look forward to much to those guys coming back is because the remaining regulars and replacements have played over their heads and have us second in offense in the league. Can't believe the guys coming back are going to make that much of a dif to the offense and they are not going to help us pitch better.

Can only play nine guys at a time.

Lester is struggling, fine. But Beckett has definitely turned the corner (2.21 ERA over last 5 starts), Buchholz is pretty clearly back to normal, Doubront had a stinker, but he's been very good this year, and DiceK can give us 6 innings, 3-4 ER and keep us in the game.

If the biggest thing we're worried about is Lester, then I promise you that we'll be fine.

That's a bold strategy, Cotton. Let's see if it pays off for them.

I'm sorry but I haven't seen Podsednik, Byrd, Darnell, or Nava being discussed in MVP talks. Ellsbury is a clear upgrade over any OF we have.

And too many people are looking at 2011 from Crawford and ignoring the rest of his career. He's an elite player, and I will make a sig bet with anyone that when he gets back, he's back to normal.

And for all the guys playing over their head, you've still got Adrian Gonzalez playing well under his talent and Pedroia hasn't exactly been lights out either.

Thank you Zimmerman for impersonating some of our hitters.

Are the Nats the first team ever with two Zimmermans in the same lineup?
