That's asinine. You know as well as i do that unless you're dealing with a generational talent' date=' drafting is a hit-or-miss proposition. There are not a lot of sure things.[/quote']

I know it. But draftnicks like you and me arent the majority.

Gotta go after this pick.

3rd rounder for the sox- Austin Maddox- RHP- U Florida. Closer for the gators, sits low to mid 90s, good sink, inconsistent slider. Had been playing both ways, will be turned into a pitcher. The sox will likely start him in the rotation then move him back to get him some innings. This guy will be an easy sign

I love your 4th round choice. Ty Buttrey from a Charlotte HS. 6'5" lanky kid who was sitting mid 90s before he tired down into the low 90s. Good enough curve, change in progress. Very high upside

Recap-

1. Devin Marrero- SS- ASU- pretty safely projects as a big league shortstop. No humongous skill, limited ceiling in terms of generational talent, but safely projects to play SS in the bigs with good contact, good glove, good arm, average speed and a professional plate approach.

1. Brian Johnson- LHP- Florida U- Big lefty who is more a crafty guy than a power guy. Sits high 80s, tops out at 91-92. Good slider, projectable change and good command. Safely projects as a middle to back of the rotation pitcher. Reminds me of the Yankee pick of Jeremy Bleich from a few yrs ago.

1-supp- Pat Light- RHP- Monmouth U- Tall righty with power, sits low to mid 90s with good sink. Slider needs to tighten up but has good potential. Change is a minus. Has the ceiling of a closer and looks to be a pen arm in the sox system. Should move fast

2- Jamie Callahan- RHP- Dillon HS, SC- good framed righty with power and projection. Can top out at 95 as an 18 yr old. Has a true 12-6 curve with plus potential and a change with plus potential. Will take a lot of money to sign

3- Austin Maddox- RHP- Florida U- Reliever with low 90s heat, good sink, can top out in the mid 90s when needed. Slider has plus potential but can be inconsistent. Had been a two way player, so should be interesting to see how he does when he focuses only on pitching. Will likely be started in the minors as a starter, but has reliever upside.

4. Ty Buttrey- RHP- Providence Sr. HS- NC- Tall, large framed righty who can run it up there in the mid 90s. Good now curve with a lot of projection. Change that has plus potential. Will be a tough sign for sure

5. Mike Augliera- RHP- Binghampton U- will see what I can get

6. Justin Haley- RHP- Fresno State U- college pitcher, will see what I can find

7. Kyle Kraus- RHP- Univ of Portland- college righty with finge stuff, but was the ace of Portland's staff.

8th rounder- Nathan Minnich 1B Shepherd College- He's a senior college first baseman. They have to be going under slot. I wonder if Marrero is going to be asking for ridiculous money

All you guys went away :(. LOL

I have been doing some scouring, and have seen the light. I think the Yankees have punted some picks and the sox definitely punted some picks as well, to gain flexibility. So, here is the deal....

Every pick has a slotted amount. The slots for the first 10 rounds are pooled together and are your draft budget. Any pick after the 10th round that gets a bonus of over $100K gets the bonus-$100K taken from the draft pool. Any player signed after the 10th round with a $100K or lower bonus doesnt count toward the pool. You can go up to 104.9% of the draft pool without incurring penalties. From 105%-110% you are taxed only. From 110%-115% you get harshly taxed and lose 1 first rounder. 115% and higher is a humongous tax and 2 first rounders. Hence, most teams will be going to the 105% range.

Now, if you do not sign a player from the top 10 rounds, that pick's slot is removed from the draft pool. So let's say the sox draft pool is $8 million. And let's say Marerro doesnt sign and his slotted pick is $2.5 million. The sox will have a draft pool of $5.5 million for the rest of their picks. But, if they sign Marerro for $1.5 million, they'd save $1 million on the slot and have $6.5 million for the rest of their picks (as their draft pool will still be $8 million, you get me). Hence all these senior guys going in rounds 1-10. The college seniors from rounds 4-10 will likely see $25-50K in bonus, while the slot recommendation is actually over $100K more than that. So, by taking guys who have no leverage, they are increasing their available overslot funds by $100K. Over on the other Yankee sites, they are expecting the Yankees to have around 850K-1 million dollars available for overslot signees after their top 10 is filled up. That means they can go crazy in rounds 11-40. Hence why the Yankees drafted 3 HSers and a College Jr LHP in rounds 11-15. It is gonna be a weird way of doing things, but it doesnt prevent anyone from drafting and signing overslot HSers late in the draft. It just now moves college seniors from rounds 11-20, where they were traditionally drafted, into the top 10 rounds

The deadline to sign these guys are July correct? MLB move up the process a month.

Yep, and it allows teams to get some feeling of what they have in year 1 before instructs. The way things were, overslot HS signees would miss all of short season and get their first taste of pro ball in fall instructs then be gone for the off season. If effectively removed any professional experience from their first pro season. Now, executives actually liked that, though, as the players who were looking to sign for more money would be showcased in summer events, be it HS level leagues or the Cape Cod league/NECBL.

According to calculations by Baseball America, the Red Sox will face increased penalties from MLB if they continue spending at their current pace to go 5% over their draft budget as pointed out by Brian MacPherson of The Providence Journal. When a team exceeds its budget by 5% or less, it is penalized by paying 75% on the amount over the threshold. Teams that go over by 5 to 10% are mandated to pay a luxury tax of 100% on the excess spending and forfeit their next first round draft pick.

I'm very concerned about their draft signings right now. I just took a look, and they're very very off, and they haven't signed one of their first rounders yet. I'm really hoping they can squeeze a cheap signing out of their first rounder, but it seems doubtful.

They signed Marrero yesterday' date=' but they are 13K from cracking the 5% mark, which would cost them their 1st rounder next yr[/quote']

They still have around 1.5M to play with for their 1st rounder (sup pick) + 3rd rounder.

No, they dont. They signed Buttrey for $1.4 million, which is nearly a million over slot recommendation. They also went over on all their other picks from 1-5. Johnson better sign for a miniscule amount or else they wont be signing anyone past round 10 for anything more than $100K

Their allotment for the first 10 rounders are 6.80M. They have spent roughly 5+ and have 2 remaining unsigned picks. Which gives them 1.5+ to work with.

It's not specific to any signing. As long as they come within 6.8M for their first 10 rounders, they don't get penalizes.
