There's another part to that Lee-Sprowl story. The team enlisted Yaz to go to Zimmer and plead with him to start Lee instead of Sprowl. Zimmer pulled a bunch of clippings out of his desk with stories about Lee calling him a gerbil, and refused to change his mind.

I think Zimmer was also quoted as saying 'the kid's got ice water in his veins' about Sprowl.

It isn't Lee's fault that the guy's a gerbil. I don't care if he bangs your sister, you put the Yankee killer in the rotation when you're in a pennant race with the Yankees.

I did not get to watch today's game but it sounded like another really stellar performance by Felix. I got the impression that he did not have his best stuff and had to battle but not seeing anything I really could not tell. Hardly matters....he has been exemplary as our 4. Not much more to expect from a 4.

Got into a lot of 3 ball counts early on (I think 5 3-ball counts in first 9 batters faced). Went 6.1, 2 ER, 7 K's, 1 BB. Another very good performance from him. More than you could ask from a #4. He's throwing more like a #2-3 lately.

Now a NYY and O's loss would be nice. One' date=' because it's always good when the NYY lose and two, the O's need to continue on their path back to reality.[/quote']

Rays lose.

Sox now 2 games back from 1st place in AL East.

Yeah but.........

Yeah but.........

But what?

The way I see it, the Orioles are not for real. They're dive bombing right now, and fast. So, if we know that the O's aren't for real and they will be a 4th or 5th place team come September, then we should be hoping they will steal a game or two from a team who will likely be in the chase come September. See what I mean?

I'd rather be 2 games back on both the Rays and the Orioles than to be 1 back on the Orioles and 3 back on the Rays.

It's June. I can't possibly care about the difference of being 2 or 3 games behind a team.

That's fine if you feel that way, but after last season, I'm paying attention all year.

All in all, I would rather be UP two games than DOWN two games.

We keep playing like this and we will be IN first place very soon. The Orioles do have a function this weekend: beat the Damn Rays.

With the fact that the Yankees started off sputtering as well and the AL East bottom feeders decided to play well through 2 months, the sox have been able to stay relevant. I honestly feel that the Rays injuries and the sox sudden surge that we will likely see some order restored come the summer. Yankees and Sox fighting it out through the summer

I can't lie - I really, really think the Yanks and Rays are going to really regret not burying the Red Sox when they had the chance. This team is surging, and is only going to get better when they get healthy.

Dan Knobler of CBS Sports tweeted that he recently spoke to a scout who had watched the Red Sox of late. Scout said that if/when the Sox get healthy, they should win the AL East.

The Yankees sputtered for awhile too, but have kicked it into gear of late. Their biggest problem, surprisingly, is their ability to bring home runs. They can pitch, especially now that Hughes has turned it around and Pettitte is throwing like the old Pettitte.

Yeah - That's basically what I'm saying. The Sox started out horribly and were bitten by the injury bug, and the Yanks and Rays had a real chance to separate themselves, but they didn't.

Now it's June, and interleague play is right around the corner. By the time the Sox and Yanks meet back up, the Sox will likely have Ells and Crawford back, as well as Pedroia and Ross.

The Sox were definitely fortunate to have the tough portion of their schedule in the 2nd half of the season.

To be totally honest, the schedule is tough all around this yr. A lot of bottom feeders have shown their capability to piss in the punch this yr. Nobody is rolling over, hell, even the Royals have spunk

The Sox seem to have a much easier schedule in the 1st half than the 2nd half.

Red Sox 2nd half includes:

3 vs NYY, 6 @ NYY

3 vs TEX, 3 @ TEX

3 vs LAA, 3 @ LAA

2 vs TB, 7 @ TB

There are some tough games there.

September is going to be very interesting. Really, nothing is going to be decided until September in the AL East, moreso this year than any other year. Check out the Sox schedule starting September 7th:

3 vs TOR

3 vs NYY

3 @ TOR

4 @ TB

3 vs BAL

2 vs TB

3 @ BAL

3 @ NYY

That's insane. And that last series against NY, man, I could definitely see that as being the series that decides the AL East and one of the WC winners. That could be fun to watch.

September is going to be great. Thing is' date=' this October will not be about baseball for me. Baby #2 is coming in October[/quote']

Congrats man. That's big news.

Thanks. They'll be 16 months apart' date=' so I will certainly be busy[/quote']

Oye. I've got nieces and nephews. Just when you think you're out of the woods, here comes another, huh?

Well, it isn't like the season so far has been all that easy. They've played 23 games so far against 2011 playoff teams, and that's only over 53 games.

3 @ Philly,

7 versus the Tigers, 3 @ Detroit

9 versus the Rays, 2 @ Tampa

2 versus the Yankees

2 versus the Rangers

That's true. I guess I'm just looking more at AL East games. They have a s*** load of divisional games in the 2nd half, which is fantastic because they'll be healthy.

With a Sox win tomorrow, there is a very real possibility that the Red Sox will overtake the Yankees (@ Detroit, Hughes vs Verlander) in the standings.

Next week, the Red Sox face the Orioles at home, and the Rays face the Yankees in NY.

The AL East Standings could well look very, very different in a matter of 1 week.
