Just read on ESPN that they are sending Bard to the bullpen. They need all the help they can get but Bard had one start and i think did really well considering everything? Anyone else agree?:dunno:

I personally think that the sooner Daniel Bard is put into a closer role, the sooner he can begin his journey into becoming an above average closer.

It's all about him avoiding any mental confusion as to whether or not he is a starter or a closer IMO.

He could be a good starter, or a good closer, the guy is a good pitcher either way. I just think that he should be a closer - sooner the better - I am excited at the prospect of Daniel Bard as a closer in say, 3 years...scary really - I think he could be as good as or better than Pap'b

They won't do that. Starters are more valuable than closers and start is what he wants to do. More importantly he is showing very good signs that he can do. He will be in the pen very likely the rest of the year and will start next year back in the rotation.

He was never going to be in the rotation this year longer than the time it took to get dice back. My only concern is that they cannot flip flop him in one season and given Buchs propensity for injury and the likelihood that Cook is not a long term answer, they will still be short arms even when dice comes back.

It sounds lke a temporary move, but I would prefer they move him there for at least the rest of this year. He is a good reliever and an okay starter. It is still very, very early, but there have to be some changes made.

I would not be if I were him either. Worse than that it sounds more like they are flip flopping him willy nilly. What a mess this bunch is. Must be frustrated by missing casting call for Three Stooges movie.

The news is they are already announcing that he will be simply missing a start and will be going back to the rotation. Cook is still in Pawtucket. So they are already going to flip Bard once and then flop him back to the rotation, something I think they can only do one time until dice gets here and then they might shift Bard to the pen for the rest of the season. The issue with that in my view is that if they flip flop him a few times or even more than once and then even with dice they run out of arms...lets say when Buch has his usual mid summer injury....then what?

They should either bite the bullet and announce him to the pen for the rest of the season or leave him in the rotation. Letting him pitch a couple of innings in order to fill this gap since he missed his start yesterday is fine but that is in fact what they have been announced. In fact what the said specifically is that Bard will either pitch on the side to fill the gap between starts or pitch a couple of innings out of the pen.

...which makes you wonder about the state of the management on the Red Sox. Bard must feel like a bowling ball.

So hes going to miss his next start. but dice's return is still unknown and they are in desperate need of some help in the pen. Has anyone heard when Cook is supposed to come up. I see we got Byrd in now are we willing to start some trade talks with possible pick up a relief pitcher for maybe an outfielder?

mike f**king gonzalez is still available..

Lets go get him we need everyone we can get we have 13 pitchers on the roster and maybe 3/4 are consitant enough to keep.

Seems to me that Bard will be in the pen temporarily. Valentine speaks pretty highly of him starting, and doesn't seem to want to give him up in that role.

I guess it all remains to be seen however..

Oh, and 500th post!

Spit in the ocean. THe problem is bigger than who the closer is or isn't.

It's a problem only because they make it a problem--the closer is put in a position where the game is lost if he blows the save. That makes him important.

When this team ends up being close to first place by the All Star break we will sit and make fun of everyone who thinks the white flags should be thrown after 15 games.

This team has serious issues, and I think 10% of the season is a big enough sample to see it. I don't know how you as a fan can be oblivious to: SS and 3B defense, OF as a whole, Bullpen as a whole, and SP ineffectiveness.

See 2011 Red Sox.... (I know how it finished, but had that team stayed healthy it could have won a world series.)

To small of a sample size to draw conclusions on SP ineffectiveness. The bullpen will be fine if they can make a few moves and put Bard back there. It will make everyone in that bullpen better if there is a rock back there that can get guys out whenever. As far as defense goes, there have been lapses yes, but I have watched every inning and it hasn't seemed THAT bad. I think Iggy will eventually be here this season, and maybe even Middlebrooks too. To say that the team is screwed so early, is an over reaction to bad april baseball.

Bard is great out of the pen but I think he deserves at least five starts in the rotation. Give him a chance to drop those walks and keep or raise his K/9. It's not like he is [much] worse than our STARS: Lester & Beckett.

What the Red Sox need is more pitching. Too few arms.

I feel for Bard…on one hand I know we need him in the pen right now but on the other hand he deserves the chance to be a full time starter. It is not fair to him but there are plenty of things in life that we all encounter that are “not fair”. Do the job they are requesting you do for now but I would not blame him if he bolts out of Boston at first chance.

If I were him I know I would.

why is it that everyone that comes out of Boston lately wants to run out ... i thought Manny was the cancer, but lately it seems like organization is doing some screwup.

seems like Ells is having the same feelings after they brought him in too soon and he reinjurred himself.

Tiexera walked out of Boston farm system as well..

(That will work itself out)

Calm down.

Organizational mismanagement is the answer. Players know they have a window to accumulate their riches before father time steals their ability. If an organization is to myopic to utilize the player and max their full potential they exit.

It happens everywhere.

Sometimes great talent does not fit into the organizational plan and both parties realize it and split. If Bard continues in the pen, I would not be surprised to see him wearing another jersey soon.

Manny was just the first, and the reason Manny was the first was because he was the most openly emotional and least controlled.

I'm more and more convinced that Manny's ability to keep the dugout loose and his cockeyed form of leadership being a veteran who went out and produced in all situations was important to the way this team won. We've gone steadily downhill since we lost him.

Everything I said was in the here and now. I know SP will correct itself' date=' but our current 3B, SS, OF, and Bullpen are killing us.[/quote']

15 games in and 3b and ss are killing us?. Aviles is really not the problem at the

moment and has actually played better then expectations. Youk i can understand

your frustration but wow talk about being overzealous.
