I'm pretty sure Buchholz will be much better than a 9 ERA. It's more than double his career ERA.
No one is saying he will end up with a 9. Today was brutal. Bobby V should have had him out of there after giving up 3 HRs. Why is he leaving guys in to get pummeled?

Probably because his bullpen stinks too.

Ellsbury, you are a funny guy.

Who do you think created this mess?

Cherington and Valentine have been on the job less than four months. They haven't had time to screw us up that bad yet.

You think Theo would of let pap walk?? Or at the very least would of made Sure we had a closer?

It sounds like you were disagreeing with when I said you don't understand baseball if you judge a player by 3 starts.
No one was judging him based on three starts. We were judging his 3 starts.

I said anyone who judges a player on three starts doesn't understand baseball, then you said then no one on this forum understands baseball. Logic would dictate that means you guys are judging him on three starts.

Yup. I think he would have let Papelbon walk because Papelbon was after a max contract and he got one. I don't think we ever would have given him what the Phillies did, nor should we have. He is overpaid.

Besides, we had a closer. Its no one's fault that he got hurt, is it?

Huh?? You seem to not know Theo?? He didn't care about spending money.... If Tito and Theo were here... Bard and pap would be in the pen

My biggest issue with this starting pitching is that while we call our 1,2,3 big for us I think the overall effect as a group is that they are a 2. Lester is not consistent enough to be a 1 yet or at least has not proven it yet, (not this year or last)...Beckett does not go deep in games enough in games any longer to be a 1 (did not last year and don't think he will this year) and Buch is more like a blend of a 3 and 4 and maybe even a 5.

Oddly enough, competitively speaking our 4 and our 5 may well turn out to be better than what other teams bring to the table in the 4 and 5 spots.

But that is still OK with me. I never expected this team to be strong from the mound. As stated before that is not how they were constructed to win games. They were constructed to win games with offense and that has been the biggest disappointment so far.

You have no knowledge of baileys injury history do you?? Obviously the front office didnt either

We didn't have that kind of money to spend this offseason. Besides, committing $50M for four years for a relief pitcher is insane. That never would have happened here, under Epstein or under anyone else. Not this year.

Are you saying that Lester's not good enough to be a #1 based on three starts or his career?

I admit that it was a roll of the dice. I would have preferred Bard in that role. Once Papelbon left they had a hole that needed filling. I didn't want Bailey in that role because I knew his injury history, but I wanted to give Papelbon his $$$$$$ contract even less.

We'll never know if pap was worth the money or not....... One thing for sure though... There was never a time when pap came into the gm you were like " oh s***, here we go" not ONCE.... Can you say that about anyone in our pen now??

Wasn't that pretty much every game in 2010 and the first half of 2011?

re you saying that Lester's not good enough to be a #1 based on three starts or his career?

I am saying that he did not prove to be a 1 all of last year when that was the first year it was expected of him and it remains to be seen this year as well. I would not be surprised if at the end of it all, this year he ends up impressing us as something a blend of a 1 and a 2 and maybe he will impress us enough to say "that is what we expect of a 1". But he has not done it as yet...it is to early this year. Without question he did not do it last year. In part that is why I think the overall effect of the three guys is a 2.

Being the 1 for a team is as much about the guy's pitching talent as it is about being able to take the pressure of being the team's stopper when the team is in a tailspin. That guy has got to be able to take the ball when the team has lost 3 in a row and go out and put up goose eggs. I happen to think that got to Lester last year and until he proves to me that he can handle that, he won't be a 1 in my eyes.

We will be able to know it in four years, when his contract is up.

Losing him was a huge loss, no doubt about it. I do recall lots of games when he created a lot of Papeldrama out there. I think he is overpaid, and I don't think that any of our GMs was going to give him that money to stay here, not this year. Look who we signed this offseason: do you see anyone given that kind of money?

Besides, Papelbon is only one issue. Epstein is responsible for the financial state we are now in, unable to pursue talented FAs last winter. Epstein and our owners, who wouldn't open their purses. Cherington had little to do with this roster, not with the guys with talent, and not with the budget. When he arrived there wasn't money available. He had to shop at Target, not Niemann Marcus.

2011 4-1 31 svs 2.94 era .93 whip?? I'm confused?? Era was high in 2010, but era is widely over-emphasized in closers.... How many gms did he come into that weren't sv situations?? Pap always had trouble in non save sit's... When you only pitch 60 innings it's not hard to have a high era
