The Cubs have acquired first baseman Anthony Rizzo and right-hander Zach Cates from the Padres for right-hander Andrew Cashner and outfielder Kyung-Min Na, the teams announced. The move provides the Cubs with a potential long-term first baseman and makes room for another first baseman in San Diego
.

Nice move for the Cubs. They didn't give up much. Would have thought TB would have offered more then that.

Ya I agree, it seems former Theo guys always do him a solid. But to be honest, Theo basically got Byrnes the SD job lol

Theo hired the SD GM (the former Sox guy) to be the Cubs GM.

Byrnes(current SD GM) is also from the "Theo" tree.

if they sign Fielder what will be his role in the mid-future? Trade-chip? Backup? Can he play another position?

The other player going to the Cubs' date=' Zach Cates, is a former student of mine and a good kid.[/quote']

Six degrees of separation and all that.

Cool.

I don't think they are seriously in the Fielder market any longer, Rizzo has proven that.

Although it could have just been a move that Theo could just not pass up on. Rizzo will not be that great of a trade chip in the future because the Angels will be shopping Morales and Trumbo, so the market for 1B will be pretty flooded. I think this was a move to put themselves out of the Fielder chase with a viable option, and wait until Zambrano and Soriano's contracts clear to go after some core players.

Zambrano was traded, unless you're talking about the leftover money. If he manages to move the Soriano contract, he would be doing a great service to that franchise.

Yeah they are still on the hook for 15Mil for Zambrano I believe.

I really don't see them moving Soriano, unless they eat some money, but soon enough that will be shown. I think so far Theo has been pretty smart with that franchise, the potential exists that they will compete regularly in 3-4 years.

I think the advantage that Theo had in Boston was that Duqeutte did a good job assembling most of the parts, he just didn't want to risk the trade that Theo did. I mainly disagree with everyone saying that Theo was brilliant and I also disagree that he stunk. He is a better than average GM and I personally think some of the dumber contracts we signed stunk of Lucciano.

Cates will turn out to be the better part of this deal. High A prospect this year. FB in the mid 90's lots of SO high ERA but low WHIP. He is the true upside Theo sees in this deal IMO.
