I wonder how much of Bobby V's stuff isn't strategic? It's plausible to think he's attempting to relieve pressure (ie attention) from the players in the wake of the embarassing end to last season by putting the pressure on himself.

Yes, but it is more likely that he is a big mouth attention whore.

Oh, and I love the Texas spelling of embarrassing.

Yes' date=' but it is more likely that he is a big mouth attention whore.[/quote']I agree. The thought that this is part of Bobby V strategy is probably wishful thinking. Bobby V will be shooting his mouth off throughout the season. People shouldn't pay it any mind, because the blather that comes out of his mouth has nothing to do with what counts-- getting his players prepared and using his pitching staff properly.

I'm leaving home Friday and returning Monday. I'm just buying tickets for Saturday though. The Cubs haven't put them up for sale yet.

Cubs tix go on sale Friday, in case anyone is thinking about coming to the Chi to see a Sox game. They are on the south side very early this year, IIRC, so this is probably your best bet.

I did this solely for your amusement! Now I have no doubt incurred the ire of the bright guy in the room. The sacrifices I make for the women in my life....

Whoa Boomer, please tell me I heard you wrong. I'm flying into Chicago for the Red Sox series with the Cubs at Wrigley Field---June 15-17. They are playing at Wrigley, not Cellular. Or isn't that so?

The Sox are indeed at Wrigley June 15-16.

Thank goodness for that. I love games at Wrigley Field. Next to Fenway Park, the Cubs' ballpark is next on my list of attractive venues to watch baseball, posts and all. Cellular Field does nothing for me. I did hear that Wrigley might be undergoing some restrucuring very soon and that would mean the Cubs might have to play for a year on the South Side. Make it 2013!!! I won't be coming to Chi Town next year.

Sorry, I meant that the Red Sox were playing the White Sox early this year. End of April, for which I already have tickets. It is likely to be pretty cold for night games, which is why June is Wrigley is probably a better choice.

Wrigley is always the better choice. White Sox fans are the worst. They show up at Target Field and harrass people and act like general *******s.

I can't imagine what US Cellular Field is like. I know someone who's been to Wrigley and US Cellular, and he said Cubs fans are nowhere near that level of d-baggery. Makes sense, though.

Oh, and Wrigley is Wrigley. US Cellular is just US Cellular. If they still had Comiskey it would be different.

LOL, I think exactly the opposite. Cubs "fans" are the worst. I've been to many games at both and I definitely prefer the Cell. Wrigley is very historic, but that's true in all senses. It's like Fenway was before the renovations.

I suspect that being at Target Field doesn't bring out the best behavior in ChiSox fans.

Most bitter of rivals, but still, White Sox fans are the worst I've encountered unless you include football fans, then Jets fans are the worst.

You should take in a Phillies game sometime. Also, I once wore some Red Sox gear to old Yankee Stadium. It wasn't pretty.

Some ChiSox fans can be dopes, but I always go in my Sox gear to games at the Cell and have yet to have anyone act out.

They don't hate the Red Sox, they hate the Twins and Tigers. Philly is generally a hostile sports town, I don't think I'd ever have an interest in going to an Eagles or Phillies or 76ers or Flyers game.

I admit that I am biased because I was once at a ChiSox-Yankees game at the Cell and the White Sox fans were treating the Yankees players and fans to some very creative heckling. :D

Who doesn't heckle the Yanks and their fans. Every team, rival or not, can agree on one thing, and thats that the Yankees stink.

The first time I attended a Red Sox Yankees game at the old Yankee Stadium in 2003 I was with a Yankee fan friend of mine and we both were subjected to some of the nastiest and dirtiest comments I've ever heard. Me because of who I was rooting for; he because he had the temerity to be sitting with a Sox fan. It was Steinbrenner's birthday, July 4, 2003. The Red Sox hit seven dongs that day and won, 10-3. By the 8th inning I thought I would have to fight my way out of there. Fortunately there about five or six other Sox fans there and by then the nasties had left. Believe it or not, that was the only time I ever had a problem there. I attended games there in 2005 and 2006 and got along well with the Yankee fans I interspersed with. In new YS last September, no problems either.

They have a sportswriter in Philly, Bill Conlin, who wrote for many years for the Daily News.

He was a controversial guy--very outspoken and critical of Philly teams, players, etc.

They found out recently he had been abusing kids some years back, and he was forced to retire. They do have a rough media in Philly--including tabloid sports radio--like in Boston.

agreed about Conlin. There used to be a guy on Philly radio named Howard Erskin (sp?). He would call every Dallas fans who called in a "cock a roach" adding the a for emphasis. He was the worst I've heard.

Anyone been to the new park?

What are your impressions?

If you are talking about Citizens Bank in Philly, I have many times. It is one of the best places to watch a MLB game rivaling Camden Yards. The food is better in Baltimore because you are close to the inner harbor. If you are driving to the game and not staying in a nearby hotel, Philly has better parking.

The fans seem to be getting rougher--everywhere. More 4 letter words, drinking, etc.

Some guy even got killed in LA. I've been to a few Scranton Yankee games, and the Yankee fans there are OK.

But there have always been drunks at the games. I remember one or two used to heckle Williams in the LF grandstand. He had a thin skin--and always equated the fans with the worst ones.

Yaz had to wear earplugs in LF. There are always drunks and rowdy fans at sporting events. This is not a new phenomenon.

You know MVP I used to wonder if those types were frustrated athletes who couldn't make it to wherever they hoped to make it to and in a fit of envy would get on good players who did. There could have been something to that but later I came up with a much more effective answer.....they were just a bunch of A-holes. Really, there is no reason for that kind of behavior at a ballpark.

Anyone see the episode of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia with the Phillies in the World Series?

It is one of my favorite episodes. Because Frank loses their tickets, the characters decide to use rumored secret tunnel between a Holiday Inn and Citizen Banks ballpark. The tunnel was built to shield road teams from Philly fans, because, as Charley says, “We’re passionate fans. We’ve gotta hammer something."

While searching for the tunnel they find a dungeon filled with fan corpses. Great episode but I'm leaving a lot out.

I've heard it's a great show but have never seen it. Are they on something like Season 4 so it would take me forever to get caught up?

Papelbon: Phillies fans are smarter than Red Sox fans

Posted by Peter Abraham, Globe Staff March 8, 2012 04:36 PM

By Peter Abraham, Globe Staff

Jonathan Papelbon took a break from trying to unlock the potential of cold fusion to conduct a radio interview in Philadelphia.

During the interview, he dropped this nugget:

"The difference, I would say, between Boston and Philadelphia, is that, you know, I think that the Boston fans are a little bit more hysterical when it comes to the game of baseball. I'd say the Philly fans, I think they tend to know the game a little bit better, being in the National League, the way the game is played."

So being a fan of a National League team makes you smarter? It must be all those tricky double switches. And having the pitcher bunt, that's practically advanced trigonometry. It's confusing just to think about.

This guy must be the head genius in Philly. Or maybe it was the National Merit Scholar who intentionally puked on the 11-year-old girl.

Papelbon and Philly. Sounds like a perfect match.

But, wait, there's more. Here's Papelbon on how he approached free agency:

“The Red Sox didn’t really come at me the way I was expecting them to come at me in the off-season. And I told my agent that the first team that shows me interest and shows me loyalty, I’m going to show that right back to them, and that was Philadelphia."

Other than apparently Papelbon, was there anybody who thought the Red Sox were going to keep him? Anybody? Everybody knew his only motivation was a landmark contract and that the Sox weren't going to invest that much in a closer, knowing the tortured history of such deals.

The guy had every right to leave. But there is no reason to beat on Sox fans now. There aren't too many players in Boston, in any sport, who received the support he did.
