Nats catcher kidnapped in Venezuela

Wilson Ramos, the Washington Nationals’ starting catcher, was kidnapped Wednesday at his home in Valencia, Venezuela, according to El Nacional newspaper.

 

El Nacional reported that four gunmen approached Ramos near his home and took him away. In a report posted shortly after 8 p.m. ET Wednesday, the newspaper said the incident had been reported to police but that Ramos’ family was still waiting to hear from the kidnappers.

 

Ramos, one of the top young catchers in baseball, batted .267 with 15 home runs and 52 RBI in 113 games for the Nationals this year.

 

The 24-year-old returned to his homeland for the offseason but had yet to play a game for the Tigres de Aragua, who still own his rights in the Venezuelan Winter League.

 

The Tigres confirmed the news of Ramos’ kidnapping via Twitter (@Oficialtigres) on Wednesday night.

 

Valencia, a large industrial city and capital of the Carabobo state, is also the hometown of current major leaguers Felix Hernandez and Francisco Cervelli.

 

Two years ago, the son of then-Colorado catcher Yorvit Torrealba was kidnapped along with two family members in Venezuela before their safe return.

The Red Sox should offer to do a prisoner exchange by sending Varitek and Wakefield for the safe return of Ramos.

The police has reported that Ramos is still alive, but the kidnappers have yet to make their demands public.
