Tom Hanks should have been there to yell at him: "There's no crying in baseball!"

Didn't see any "crying", but thought he was deferential to Cherington. This was clearly also a "let's rebuild Cherington" news conference as well.

V's quite an articulate guy. I can't recall any Red Sox manager being that articulate. A real contrast to the younger reserved Cherington. They pushed all the right buttons publically. We'll see if they can work together privately.

Color me impressed. On thing I can imagine immediately is that Bobby (a one-word figure soon enough if you ask me) will not let a lack of passion bring this team down. He is older and experienced, yet openly acknowledges that this is by FAR the best situation he has been a part of. It took him decades to get there. The players--love him or hate him--won't be allowed to forget that their opportunities in the league are fleeting and that this Sox team really is a great chance to get a WS. Hard to hate a guy for being passionate.

CHERINGTON: VALENTINE WAS MY HIRE

By: DJ Bean

Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington said at manager Bobby Valentine's introductory press conference that Valentine was his choice, and not just that of ownership or anybody else working above him.*

When the Red Sox did not offer candidate Dale Sveum the job after he interviewed with the team for a second time, rumors swirled that Cherington did get to ultimately make the decision.*

"It's just not true," Cherington said of whether president Larry Lucchino or somebody in ownership made the decision. "We went through a very thorough process. We talked to a lot of candidates, we did a lot of research on a lot of candidates. At the end of the process, I made a recommendation to ownership, I believe it was sometime on Monday, that we offer the position to Bobby, and we did sometime Monday or Tuesday morning, then he accepted it.*

"That's the truth," he added. "It was a collaborative process. Ownership, as they as they absolutely should, was involved in the discussion about all the candidates."**

I heard and saw BC making that statement and I have never seen a more strident appeal to be believed. Just did not smell right. Everybody is making to much of an effort to "sell" this story. It is all to forced. That is not the equivalent of a lie detector test but a pretty good indicator that something is wrong. The truth rarely sounds either forced or strident.

It would be so easy for the Sox to make this whole stupid mess go away but no...not happy unless it is a complicated mess.

With any luck the front office will start to function more competently which will go a long way to just burying this manager hunt thing. If that happens we won't have people trying continually to review all the FO screw ups starting with this manager mess. Then once the season starts hopefully the baseball itself will keep everybody occupied.
