I too don't get the Ga-Ga-for-Garza bonanza. Is he good? Yeah, he's a solid pitcher, but he's not the kind of guy that deserves this level of excitement, IMO. He's got a lot of what Lackey had going for him in his FA year. Best guy available. That does not necessarily mean "Guy You Set the World on Fire to Get". Buyer beware.

And, yeah, if they did get him, it would annoy the ever loving s*** out of me having him on the team. I hated having to watch him spit 38 times between every pitch when I only caught 5 or 6 of his games a year. I would not look forward to seeing it every 5th day.

THIS.

I'm not big on Garza either but I'd like to see him in the rotation. Only if we don't have to give up to much for him though because he's not really worth it.

He's disgusting, but less disgusting than what we ran out to the mound in the 4th and 5th rotation spots last year.

Of the 4 most talked about available starting pitching options, here is my order of preference:

1. Oswalt (1 yr contract)

2. Garza

3. Edwin Jackson

4. Kuroda

They are all very close. Three and four could easily flip flop depending on contractual terms. I give Jackson the nod because he is 10 years younger than Kuroda, and he should be hitting his prime.

What's your order of preference?

If I had Felix' date=' sure. I'd have the RF platoon be Aviles/Kalish.[/quote']

Well, as Fred Said

Sweeney can't run, has no power, cannot hit lefties and is a player that should have a problem even making the team, and did I say he bats lefthanded? As for McDonald, is Cheerries kidding? The guy can't hit, can't field and is one of the dumbest base runners around

That's why I would like a guy like Ross as well in order to make the trade. Regardless Sweeney is prone to injuries, isn't he?.

Anyway, it is a matter of opinion.

My choice would depend on what I would give up.

Since Garza is "the man you build your rotation around" I would see at least Kalish and Middlebrooks and if you rush me Lavarnway in Cubland; I don't like that my friend. If you don't give up Kalish, make the deal.

On the other hand you have Kuroda and Oswalt. IMO they will cost you +-12 M/year. Yes, they will cost you go over the LT, but at least you keep your top prospects, regardless our farm is not that abundant of these kind of guys (Kal, Lav, Mid).

From MLB-Traderumors

•Olney suggests the Red Sox and Nationals could have interest in Cubs outfielder Marlon Byrd, who will earn $6.5MM in 2012, the final year of his contract. The Red Sox could play Byrd in right and the Nationals could use him in center

I would love to see the Red Sox get Marlon Byrd.

Ryan Kalish says he had left shoulder surgery in November in addition to his September neck operation, according to Peter Abraham of the Boston Globe. Kalish may be ready for game action by May or June, but he doesn’t have a clear timetable. The Red Sox have Sweeney and Darnell McDonald in right, but it wouldn’t be surprising to see them pursue other options.
I didn't know that he had an additional surgery. This should lower his value as a trading chip. He may also be looking at another lost season if he hits any bumps in the road.

Agree 100%. I might actually have to skip watching his starts. :(

The quality of your posts is consistently overshadowed by the lame insults of Theo and Ben. You act like they stole your child, sent us needlessly to war abroad, or burned Fenway to the ground for the insurance money. If you let that drop I can envision having amicable discussions with you.

Really, pinnoccio Epstein? Is he a compulsive liar or does his nose grow when he does? As far as I can tell neither is the case.

Oswalt and Kuroda 1 year contract. I'd take that anyday.

Jackson is the youngest of them and if he is reasonable, 3/30M I'd sign up to that.

Garza: emptied the farm and $100M extension. Too risky for a pitcher.

Each or OSwalt/Kuroda contract should add an extra $4M toward the tax.

I like Oswalt with a 1 year contract and not having to give up any prospects, the key here is the future, in 2013 Lackey will probaly be the in the rotation, so with the big 3 and a solid year from Bard it would appear are rotation is set until 2015 when Beckett and Lackey's contract's come off the books and I don't think it will be Oswalt, probaly somebody like Saunders, Francis, or Young. With the current contract situations its a pipedream to be in the potential bidding for Cain or Hamels in the 2013 offseason.

Did Cherington take a stupid pill after making that good trade for Bailey? He must have if he really believes that Sweeney or McDonald is the answer in RF. I did a double take when I read that too, Fred. Is he freakin' kidding us even mentioning Dogshit Darnel's name as even a possibility for this year's roster? He better not be if he knows what's good for him.

So there is someone stupider than Theo Epstein!. Why in God's name would you put McDonald out there? I wouldn't even put him out there at the AAA level, nevermind in the Majors. Let's face it. Anyone of these numbskulls makes JD Drew look like an All-Star. We stand a better chance getting production out of that position re-signing that idiot, J.D Drew.

Anyone else for bringing back JD on an incentive laden 1 year contract? I doubt he would come back, but with the current situation he couldn't make it any worse if he did want to.

As far as platooning RF is concerned, it isn't that bad. Aviles is also in the mix, and he can hit--though I question his ability to play RF at Fenway. There is always the possibility that they might get somebody else in trade or free agency. Byrd and A.Jones have been mentioned. The splits with Sweeney suggests he would be OK in a platoon with a RHd hitter. McDonald hits LHders about as well as Sweeney hits Rhders. And Kalish should be ready to go by mid season. Kalish's shoulder surgery probably takes him out of any trade scenarios for a pitcher, so more likely you're looking at a Kazmir, Sheets, Webb, etc type of low cost signing.

What Ben really was saying is Kalish won't be available until mid-season due to shoulder surgery in November. That kills any trades involving him--at least until mid-season. By that time, they might have Dice-K back in the mix.

I hope he takes his money and goes home to do what he does best-- get fat and lazy and blame everyone else for his failures.

If you had a choice between Andrew Miller, Kyle Weiland, Tim Wakefield, Scot Atchison, and Dice-k, who would you pick for a #6 starter? I think the answer is pretty obvious. He's a pain in the ass, but even he is a huge upgrade over what they threw out there last year.

Ahh, but with Valentine, the Japanese pitching guru, on board, Dice K could turn into the ace that we had hoped for several years ago. ;)

If he pitches a few meaningless innings in September that will be about it.

He had TJ in june, so he'll be ready to pitch this summer.

Ideal offseason plan:

-Sign Oswalt

-Trade Reddick+ for CL Bailey

-Pick up decent RH OF to platoon with Kalish

-Move Bard to rotation

1. Ellsbury CF

2. Pedroia 2B

3. Gonzales 1B

4. Youl 3B

5. Ortiz DH

6. Crawford LF

7. Salty C

8. Kalish RF

9. Scutaro

1. Lester

2. Beckett

3. Buchholz

4. Oswalt

5. Bard

Bench

C Shoppach

IF Punto

OF Free Agent

IF Aviles

OF McDonald

Bullpen

CL Bailey

SU Melancon

SU Jenks

MR Albers

MR Aceves

MR Miller/Morales/Bowden

So far so good, hopefully they can get a better OF than McDonald or maybe make a run at Cespedes. Still want to see them sign Oswalt of course to round things out.

It's really sad when he would be an improvement over what we have to go with right now. I'm all in for that idea.

He looked pretty shot last year. I think he is probably through.
