Hi all!

I am trying to plan a surprise one year anniversary present for my husband for next June.... I would like to give him the gift at Christmas time.

The plan is a trip to Boston to see the Red Sox play. Does anyone have suggestions on decent places to stay in Boston, as well as good places to eat and other attractions we can go to, besides just the game?

I also would like to include a Vintage Red Sox Jersey with the gift. Looking at past jerseys I'm a little overwhelmed! Since you are all die hard fans, maybe you could tell me what jersey you think he might like best?! And does anyone know where I can get a high quality vintage jersey, for a reasonable price?

I look forward to all of your feedback!

Which jersey he likes is kinda down to his personality, but I've found it's hard to go wrong with Pedroia or Lester. Home whites, it's the only kind of jersey to have IMHO.

And if you want to get actual Red Sox tickets, and don't want to have to pay a scalper for them, good luck -- it's a really competitive market thanks to the rabidity of the fanbase. (not really a surprise -- popular team + highly populated region + a lot of money in the region + MLB's single smallest ballpark = lots and lots of unsatisfied demand)

Little pro's tip for you -- if you're from out of region, and it sounds like you are, you may be well advised to buy a ticket for a Sox road game instead. It's complete luck of the draw trying to get tickets in the waiting rooms and there's usually open seats for Sox fans when the team's on the road playing less popular squads (pretty much anyone but NYY really). Camden Yards is a particular favorite as the Orioles run a good ballpark but a bad team, so their stands are rarely filled with their own supporters. If hubby is a bit.. ahem... broad in the beam, he might thank you for leaving him out of Fenway's seating anyway, which was designed for early 20th century backsides.

Just a thought.

I was going to get the tickets in advance. Hence why I am planning it now. Any idea when tickets go on sale for the 2012 season?

I don't remember when tickets go on sale, but I would recommend signing up for redsox.com's newsletters for updates on that-- personally, if they didn't e-mail me, I'd forget. Getting tickets is wayyyy easier than people make it out to be. If you go to a weeknight game, acetickets/stubhub usually sell tickets well below face value versus divisional opponents. There also an absolute ton of people selling tickets down there.

As far as good food-- sometimes I feel like you can't throw a rock in Boston without hitting a good restaurant.

As someone else said, subscribe to Redsox.com and keep an eye open for something called the virtual waiting room.

When we were up there this past week, we went over to Cask and Flagon. It's a sports bar, not sure if thats what he'd want, but we sat on the patio and it's right across the street from the Monster portion of Fenway. They have delicious buffalo chicken dip, and their pizza is good too.

Yeah, there are a ton of great sports bars around that area. We usually go to Boston Beer Works--who have lots of their own brews-- but I've yet to go any that I haven't been happy with.

By the way - My wife got that job she was interviewing for, so we will be moving up there in January/February. I am absolutely ecstatic, being able to catch a Sox game just about anytime I want, plus not having to buy the MLB package to watch the games.

Thanks buddy. We had an absolute blast. My wife had never been up to Boston before, so she didn't know what to expect. Turns out it's now her favorite city.

Sorry Wife. Didn't mean to hijack the thread!

Wife,

As a general rule, tickets go on sale in early-mid December.

It is a s***-fight of epic proportions to get them directly from the Red Sox. You can sign up at RedSox.com to be in a free lottery for "special" tickets, e.g., Yankee games, Monster seats and reserved tables on the RF roof. Believe it or not, people do actually win these (I've gotten Monster seats, Yanks tix and RF Roof seats through the lottery)

If you arent selected in the lottery then the day all the tickets go on sale to the general public, you can plan on being in a RedSox.com virtual waiting room for the better part of the morning.

You'll have better luck with weekday games than weekends. But I think that goes without saying.

I'd stay away from April and May tickets because the weather is unpredictable at best and theres not much worse than having a nice lower box seat that you paid $135 for and its a rainy Tuesday night in April and the temp is 39 degrees and the wind is blowing 20 mph (early season winds blow in almost exclusively, FYI)

If you don't mind paying a little more, StubHub and Ace Ticket can be a valuable resource but the better the game, and the day of the week, plus the time of the year can jack the price on some tickets into triple and even quadruple figures. Check these sites out of you cant get anything directly from the Red Sox but shop around games, days and sites. Use common sense.

The beauty of life in this day and age is that if you want a ticket to literally anything it is available to you as long as you're willing to pay

Boston has a shitload of great restaurants.

The North End (near the Garden) has awesome Italian. My personal favorite in the North End is Massiminos. I think its on Endicott St. It doesnt have the flash and je ne c'est quoi of a fancier place like Strega or Bricco but the food compares with the best of them.

Abe & Louie's is the best steak house in the city IMHO, but theres a Capital Grille, a Ruth Chris, a Morton's, plus the Palm but those are all pretty expensive.

The No Name Restaurant on Atlantic Ave (I think) is a great place for seafood, as is the Barking Crab on the Waterfront

Santarpio's in East Boston and Regina in the North End are great pizza places

And Rino's Italian Eatery in East Boston is the best restaurant that no ones ever heard of. As much as I love the North End and the quality Italian Food you can get there, Rino's has the best Italian Food - possibly on Earth

ENJOY!!! and good luck

I have to add thanks for all the suggestions in this thread. I'm heading to Boston next month for a Pats game (and a couple Bruins games and a Fenway tour) and excited to try many of these places! Boston Beer Works sounds awesome and (the one on the North End) is super close to my hotel. Thanks again!

I think you are using the Red Sox to do double duty for you. You are looking to cover yourself for a Christmas present and an Anniversary gift. What's up with that?
