White Sox rallying. Burnett pulled after giving up 7 runs through 4.2. Two men still in scoring position.

Seriously. The Sox have more walkoffs with Bedard on the team than the Mariners had wins in a 20 game span

Yup

I was discussing something today with a coworker and wondered if anyone knew the rules regarding this:

We've all seen amazing catches to rob people of home runs (scaling a wall, et cetera), but in places like right field at Fenway where the wall is low,it brings up an interesting question that I've always wondered.

If a batter hits a fly ball, once the fielder is really sure it's going into, say, the bullpen at Fenway, can he just jump the short little wall and stand in the bullpen to catch it? Or is that considered different than just leaning or falling over the fence?

You have to have a portion of your body in the field of play when the catch is made.

I've always wondered this too, but I think you have to make a catch within th field of play

Anytime Wake holds a team to 3 runs in 6 innings, that's as good as you're gonna get from him--and it's good enough.

Too bad he didn't get his 200th win. At least we would be past that.

Tito keeps stretching this guy with his cockamamy pitch counts. Cripes, the guy is older than Tito.

Another good question is - can you get up on the fence and dive into the bullpen, catch the ball, and throw it back (like trying to keep a punt from a touchback in football) to keep it in play?

No they can't. That's like running into the dugout instead of leaning to catch a pop up.

Welcome to the OOFAPC: the obscenely overpaid free agent pitchers club: Burnett, Lackey, Zito, ...

Any other worthy members out there?

Gotcha. I kind of assumed that, seeing as if you could leave the field to make a catch there would be no need for any walls, you could just paint a line on the ground and call anything that lands beyond it a home run.

I only wondered sometimes because, particularly at Fenway, there seem to be a good amount of HRs into the bullpen that could have been caught with a simple lean, just like guys do with fouls into the stands. TRY HARDER YOU *******S.

No. But every ballpark has different "ground rules" of where you're allowed to stand when you make a catch. In some ballparks, you can stand on the grounds crew's tarp to make a catch and in others the ball is out of play once you get on the tarp.

Suns is officially on Talksox suicide watch.

Ells will jack one here

Good call.

Damn really wish I saw this game. Too busy job hunting and going to the gym. Sucks Wake didn't get 200 wins but whatever another day.

Ellsbury goes 1-5 with the Walk-Off HR. Pretty awesome but also his third day in a row going 1-5 and 2nd with the walk off. Interesting. Hard to say he's slightly slumping when he has 2 walk-offs in a row.

At this rate you can be sure Ellsbury and Boras will be requesting a Crawford-type contract in the future.

Yup -- 'cept I hear Boras doesn't do long-term deals. Less years but still 20mill a pop. I sure hope the Sox cough up the money for him, too.

Why is Beckett not pitching vs. CC? Or why not Lester vs CC? It seems to make the most sense to not put Lackey vs. CC later this week. Unless our offense can have a surprisingly good day vs. CC

Dude. What are you smoking?

ARod, Beltran, CarGo, ManRam all took big money, big year deals.

That said, Ellsbury is going to demand 7/140. Maybe the Sox can get him for 5/90 or something around there.

although i agree with you, i do think its time that lackey stepped up in a big game. unfortunately, with clay going down for the season, we're gonna need lackey to perform big time. throw him insome big games and let's see how he does. he's suprisingly won 4 of his last 5. if we can get him back on track for october, and he can pitch in the playoffs like he did against us in '09, i'll take it.

I knew a Yankees fan would come into this game thread and say something like that. I thought it was be Jackson coming into say that we won't be able to resign him though since he's done that before when Ellsbury has a good game.

Ellsbury has two options. He can take a hometown discount and give up a year or two of FA, cash in on a career season and get the security of getting big money. Or, he can wait. With only two more ARB years left, I'd say its in his best interest to just wait, but I wouldn't put it past this organization to give him a 4/60 deal.

Sounds like a lot of people on this board!

Reading thru this thread was excruciating.

Wake gave up 5 hits, 3 runs, walked 2 and struck out 6, not bad at all for someone who should "retire". And Williams gave up no hits, no runs, walked 1 and struck out 2. People's overaction to these two guys was ridiculous.

Jacoby is THE s***!

EDITED: My bad, I don't know if you had to ask to start one of these so if you did, sorry. I tried to delete the post and thread but was unsuccessful. I'm fairly new here. Let's win.

Again just sticky a game thread with rules...

Yeah. Sorry I jumped the gun there. I thought it was whoever made the thread first. My apologies to all.
