I'd rather have Cameron around than McDonald. Hopefully they can have a deal in place for Cameron or something, otherwise we just dumped the lesser of 2 evils for nothing.

Why on earth would you prefer one over the other? They're the same player, and if anything McD is younger.

As a very junior player, he is still willing to run personal errands for the vets. Cameron felt that he was beyond that.

I'd prefer Cameron over McDonald because a .149/.212/.266/.477 line is slightly better than a .122/.173/.204/.377.

And how would it really matter that McDonald is younger when both are likely to be on this team only to the end of this season, which is a couple months?

Now just release McDonald and ill be happy.

Theo on Mike Cameron

"We've been scratching our heads. I'll take the hit on this one," said Epstein regarding the acquisition of Cameron and subsequent lack of production from the 38-year-old. "We try to be disciplined with trying to look for players in their primes when we bring them in. Sometimes, you just can't do that. Mike was still a productive player when we got him, but -- this is all speculation -- maybe because of his advanced age, despite the great shape he keeps himself in, he had the significant internal injury, the double hernia, double groin surgery this winter, maybe just made the recovery that much more difficult at his age.

"He's a remarkable athlete. He keeps himself in fantastic shape. He worked his tail off on the rehab. There's a chance he goes somewhere else and snaps back into form and makes a huge difference for somebody. That's the only thing we could come up with, that maybe it was tough for him to overcome that injury given how experienced he is -- and the role at the same time. That was a double-whammy that was hard for him to recover from. He's used to being an everyday player. He's going from 500 at-bats to 350, the way we envisioned it, and then we got off to a slow start and the role got reduced even more and it never came together for him."

Epstein explained that there was some hope that Cameron could pick up where he left off in '10, when he hit .357 in 48 plate appearances against left-handing pitching. This season, however, the outfielder managed just nine hits in 63 at-bats (.143) vs. southpaws.

"I think there are reasons to still believe in Mike Cameron as an exception because of the remarkable shape he was in. We recognize it was a risk," Epstein said. "Given some of the other things that were going it made sense at the time. But when it doesn't work out you have to stand up and say it didn't work out. That one didn't work out. We're not going to sugar coat it. We still think very highly of Mike as a player and as a person. He got hurt and ended up not producing this year. It ended up not working out for the Red Sox despite his best efforts."[/Quote]

Theo has just acknowledged they need another RHd bat in the outfield.

Beltran, get your bags packed.

I get the sense that Beltran isn't walking through that door. My gut feeling is that if we make a move, it will be for a roleplayer type like Melky, and that the FO still trusts JD Drew to pull something out of this season the way he did in 2007.

Great news that they DFA'd Cameron.

The only downer about it is that Cam seemed to be a great guy. I wish he was an arrogant prick that I would have no ill feelings toward DFA'ing him, but everyone loved him, he was always great with the fans, etc. It's too bad he was horrific.

This from the Globe:

Drew has earned the reputation of a guy who can get hot and carry a team for a month, and the right fielder, who continues to be heckled in the City of Brotherly Love after he failed to sign with the Phillies as a No. 1 draft pick in 1997, feels he might be turning the corner.

“I think I’ve found something the past week or so in my swing,’’ he said. “Just trying to simplify it and get back to basics and try to stick with it. I’m hitting some balls hard and before this I wasn’t even doing that. I know the results aren’t quite there, but I believe that if I can stick with it, some of those hits might start to fall in and we get going again.

Hopefully he's found whatever it is that he's been doing wrong and can get into a groove. I said this about Crawford after his April, and I'll say this about Drew right now. I don't care what his numbers turn out to be this season. Give me the back of the baseball card from today going forward, and I'll be happy. If that means Drew ends up hitting .260 this year, fine. But if we get a .275/.380/.430 line from today on, we'll win a lot of games.

I have always liked that Theo holds himself accountable for his bad moves. Too many people make too many excuses today and too many people are willing to accept lame ass excuses. Not enough people take responsibility. Kudos to Theo.

It would have been nice if he had found his swing before this road trip. When interleague stops and Ortiz and Crawford are back we will not need his bat that much.

Maybe he can stay and take Wally the Green Monster's job? . . . Nah, he doesn't have the wheels to take Wally's job. Enjoy retirement, Mike. Leaving the major league life behind is going to suck.
