I think the time to do that is April thru July and not late August and September of a pennant drive. Furthermore' date=' I have not read or heard anything that the Red Sox are committed to Reddick in RF next season.[/quote']

Yeah, but you shouldn't need a big official announcement to know that their closer is in a walk year, as is their DH and guys like Ellsbury and Bard are getting more expensive. I'd say it's at least an option to man RF with whatever in-house options look the most attractive after ST next year. So, Reddick/Kalish seem like decent guesses. Reddick is gonna have to have a first pennant drive sometime if in fact he is going to be given a shot as the full time right fielder. He hasn't done anything to play himself out of consideration for that role, he's come up big in tight situations at times this year, and they're probably going to be giving him a long leash down the stretch.

When would be a good time to get a young players feet wet in a pennant race? They did it with Ellsbury, that worked out.

He might not have suffered that injury had he been traded to the Red Sox. The injury was not foreseeable. A rookie going into a slump in his second time around the league is to be expected.

Beltran was injured half of 2009 and half of 2010. It really didn't make a whole lot of sense to assume he'd be healthy all year, especially the later half when he was bound to be beaten up.

There are good platoon options like Carlos Quentin.

Wandy has had trouble getting wins on a bad team the last couple of years. he's a better pitcher than his record. Certainly a no.3 starter on the Red Sox. But he comes with a steep price.

It's good to be 2nd behind NY at this time, since they can block the Yankees from getting him.

Don't be surprised if they do, though he might get claimed by another team below Boston.

They're only 2.5 back and the only spot in their rotation where they could use an upgrade is the 5th spot. Wandy doesn't present a guaranteed upgrade over what they have either, he's just expensive and could keep them from going after much better options in the offseason. This Guardians team is really young, I think they're expecting to compete year in year out, they're not desperate to clog their payroll at the moment. Besides, Huff is throwing well and it's Carmona and Ubaldo who are letting them down. They'll get Carrasco off the DL and maybe have a decision to make as to whether or not to keep running Carmona out there, but he's been better lately. Wandy is stuck in Houston I'd imagine.

if I had to pick a team that might claim Wandy' date=' it's the Guardians.[/quote']

I don't know. the Guardians and Astros were close before the deadline, but the Guardians pulled back their offer. Shortly afterward, they ended up with Jimenez and his better contract. I'm guessing they are through trading even if it means Rodriguez going to the Tigers...who were also close to trading for him before the deadline. I believe the Astros wanted Jacob Turner included in the deal. Also, the Blue Jays were said to have interest in Rodriguez earlier, and you never can predict what their GM is going to do.

The Arizona Diamondbacks will have a crack at him before the AL gets a chance. They might be the best bet to lay a claim to him. They acquired Jason Marquis (yawn), but now he is hurt. Then, Towers has been rebuilding that team and understands the importance of prospects to his franchises future. He did make a waiver claim on Adam Dunn a few years back but didn't give up much in the way of prospects.

There is the added factor that someone will place a claim to block an opponent from getting him. It would be a gamble that the Astros would say "take him and his contract", but I doubt that would happen. The Astros will have the off season to make a deal for Rodriguez that will bring back some prospects..

Geeze! I'm glad the Sox did not trade for Ubaldo Jimenez. Today he lasted 3 1/3 against the Tigers and gave up 9 hits and 8 earned runs. His ERA is now 7.29 since coming to Cleveland.

It was kind of suspicious that the Rockies were so eager to deal their best pitcher who was signed reasonably for a few years.

MINNEAPOLIS -- Houston lefty Wandy Rodriguez was put on waivers Friday, and if not claimed he will clear today. Though the Yankees backed off Rodriguez as the Aug. 1 trade deadline approached, they have been following the cash-dumping Astros, who are looking to move him.

The Blue Jays have an interest, too.

At the trade deadline, Freddy Garcia hadn't cut his index finger, Bartolo Colon had won two straight and A.J. Burnett hadn't fallen deeper into the abyss.

Rodriguez has $23 million coming across the next two years and some clubs are wary how his stuff would do in the American League.

Rodriguez, 32, is 9-9 with a 3.31 ERA for the worst team in baseball.

According to an MLB executive, Oakland right-hander Rich Harden has been claimed/blocked by several teams, including the Yankees, who had a scout at Harden's recent seven shutout innings against the Blue Jays.

The Chicago White Sox would be an interesting place for Wandy to land. Suddenly they're back in play, and they're going to lose Buehrle at the end of the season -- wouldn't be a terrible gamble for them to try and make a play for a bit of respectability and keep the fans on board.

The Angels and the Tigers could both be in on him as well.

With Williams' record, I'd agree, but with Dunn and Rios on the books, he has to be gun shy of Rodriguez's contract.

Wandy was claimed by the Rockies

And that is a surprise. I guess they just wanted to stop the Astros from trading him unless they are fools...or Jimenez is totally shot. Why would they trade an excellent contract and try to acquire a piss poor one? Something does not make sense. At least the Yankees won't get Wandy Rodriguez before this season over.

The Rox got two ace level prospects AA or higher for a pitcher they sold high on. My guess is they want a good veteran to lead their young staff. And Wandy has been better than Ubaldo thus far this season

The Rockies are a pretty smart organization, and I get the trading of Jimenez. I just don't get wanting Rodriguez. I know they have trouble luring free agent pitchers there, but why trade for this one?

First, Rodriguez is owed almost twice the money as Jimenez over the next three years. That is what makes this so odd to me. Unless the Asros are willing to include some significant cash, the money seems to be a likely deal breaker.

Also, although Rodriguez has pitched well at Coors, he has never started more than a single game there in one season. How will he pitch over a complete season (or four)? The thin air there tends not to be kind to ball movement and Rodriguez is a soft tosser who relies on a big curveball and breaking offspeed pitches.

Finally, I am having trouble remembering a pitcher who signed a long term contract with Colorado and had long term success. I believe the effects of pitching in the high altitude cause the arm to wear out. I might be wrong but I can't remember a pitcher with long term success there.

It appears the Astros have pulled Rodriguez off waivers. They can place him on waivers again but lose the right to pull him off a second time.

Kevin Millwood is 1-1 with 2 QS in 3 starts for Colorado.

Yeah. I noticed that. He's pitching better than Lackey or Wakefield, and the Sox decided to pass on him. They are stuck with those two guys--one because of his salary, the other because he has been around forever.

If there is anything that will keep the Sox from a championship this year, it's the absence of Buchholz in the playoffs and these two guys, who need 7-8 runs to win. Maybe Buchholz will be back, or Bedard will save the day.

Drew sprained his finger and will be re-examined. I just have one thing to say about this:

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

hahaha, good. Hopefully now he knows to keep his finger out of his vagina.

Today is the deadline for Waiver trades. Anyone read or hear about any activity by the Sox?

Red Sox signed Joey Gathwright to a minor league deal:thumbsup:

The Globe is reporting that the Sox have picked up Conor Jackson for reliever Jason Rice. MLBTR has it as well.

http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2011/08/red-sox-acquire-conor-jackson-.html

The Red Sox acquired Conor Jackson from the Athletics for Jason Rice, the A's announced (on Twitter). Oakland is sending cash to Boston in the deal, according to MLB.com's Jane Lee (on Twitter).

Jackson, 29, can fill in at the corner positions for the Red Sox and provide a right-handed bat off of the bench. He has a .249/.315/.342 line in 368 plate appearances this year and boasts a career line of .286/.384/.441 against left-handers. The 2003 first rounder was a key contributor for the D'Backs from 2006-08, but his offensive production has fallen off since. Jackson earns $3.2MM this season before hitting free agency.

Rice posted a 3.69 ERA with 9.4 K/9 and 4.4 BB/9 in 85 1/3 innings of relief for Boston's Triple-A affiliate this year. In 256 career minor league appearances, most of which have come out of the bullpen, the 25-year-old has a 3.91 ERA with 9.8 K/9 and 5.2 BB/9. The White Sox selected him in the 11th round of the 2005 draft.

I like it. Nothing crazy, just a simple move to enhance our depth in the outfield and give us a solid option off the bench to hit lefties. Jackson's struggles were a product of him playing in Oakland more than anything else IMO. He's always had talent and now he'll have a ballpark that's better suited to his abilities.
