Looking over the stats, I do not agree with the Varitek comparison. He had a rough first half in the first half of his rookie year--but most rookies struggle a little bit early on. But then, he came back with a .785 OPS after the ASB of that year.

Saltalamacchia is in his 5th year in the majors, not his first.

None of those 5 years are complete years. He was jerked around constantly. In essence, he's had 5 rookie years, having to make an adjustment for the level of play 5 different times. While their situations are not identical, Varitek's rookie campaign, at a minimum, should give pause to overreaction, and that's all I'm looking for.

Again, this kind of comparison doesn't take into account things like prior performance, or skill sets.

Regarding what any of us thinks or feels about Salty, I cannot imagine the team/FO giving up on him so quickly into the season. They know more about the situation than we do and will do what is best for the team IMO.

On this forum? So many people overeact when we are losing and winning. God forbid we lose the O's series or worse, get swept....doom and gloom will again prevail.

In 2007-2009 he had the meat of the season (May - August) to figure it out. He had some rest here and there, but it wasn't like he was here one month, and in AAA the next-- if he lost playing time, it was at the beginning or end of the season.

That being said, I can fully admit that I have definitely been overreacting a lot this season.

I don't think it is an over reaction to observe that this kid doesn't belong on the field QBing this high-priced pitching staff. That's how it looks right now. Hopefully, he improves, but expectations are very low at this point. Of course, they have to give this some time, but he's bringing nothing to the table right now. That's not panic. It's just an observation.

If only. I'd take .271/.328/.451 from Salty happily.
That really puts it in perspective. We would be happy for him to do as well as a previous flop.

Salty is in the wrong place at the wrong time. He needs to be catching for the Pirates or the Royals.

Not an expensive pennant contender full of stars. The Red Sox need experience and defense behind the plate. The team is bulit to win now. Salty is one of Epstein's annual ego trips.
