Fox Sports' Ken Rosenthal believes "it's becoming increasingly unlikely" that Jarrod Saltalamacchia and Jason Varitek will finish out the season as Boston's catching duo.

Neither Tek or Salty have been hitting the ball, and combined they have allowed 20 stolen bases the most in the AL. Pudge Rodriguez, Bengie Molina, and Chris Snyder are supposedly targets for the Sox if they plan on making a move.

Gammons mentioned that Federowicz is the strongest possibility for internal options-- he calls a great game, and has a good arm, and couldn't possibly hit any worse.

Why would we option Aceves for AAA with a 2.25 ERA? Mind Bottling...

Because Albers is now healthy and ready to reclaim his spot in the middle of the Boston bullpen. Not really sure why we would send someone who posted a quality 2.25 ERA and 0.88 WHIP over 8 innings down to the minors.

Great. Chris Snyder, a career .230 hitter.

Salty is acutally not that bad at throwing out runners .

only 5 MLB catchers ( qualified stats ) have a better rate throwing out runners

The caught stealing statistic includes throw outs by the pitchers. Of the 6 CS Salty "has" only two of those are his.

I would gladly take Molina or even Rodriguez at this point. Both have extensive experience including playoff baseball and both offer much much more offensively than Salty and/or Tek. Another name I'd throw into the mix is Ramon Hernandez, who's currently the back up in Cinci... guy can rake consistently and is capable of handling pitchers effectively as well. I doubt it would take a whole lot to get him if we asked... probably a low level prospect or two at most.

Synder doesn't look so bad so far looking at his stats with the pirates right now.

I don't know about Pudge, he's pretty old now. Unless he can really give us a lot at the plate do we really need two catchers near 40?

Bengie Molina would be good, but I've heard he's in semi-retirement right now. I'm not sure what that means but apparently he didn't accept a offer during the off-season.

To me that means he didn't get an offer he liked during the off-season... if we call now and make him a quality offer he'll come on board IMO. It would be his best shot at a championship and he wouldn't have to be the main brunt offensively.

He'll be a brunt all right, but it won't be offensively, it'll be running the basepaths. Watching Jose Molina and Adrian Gonzalez race would be like watching Kobe Bryant, Charlie Sheen, Ben Roehtlisberger, Youker and Bill Clinton having a contest over who can go the longest without touching themselves. ;)

Did not know that...

I figured the pickoffs would be excluded.

And, isn't one of those the double steal where he let a run come home?

Whoever said Ramon Hernandez' date=' I'm digging that idea. And on the same topic, how has Luis Exposito been doing down in the minors?[/quote']

That would be me... personally, I think he's our best option, but to be honest, I'd take just about anyone right now over the shitpile we've got in Salty/Tek. Hernandez has hit well at just about every stop he's had in his career and I have no doubt he'd do just fine in handling the pitching staff as well.

Happy birthday, Terry Francona

ANAHEIM, Calif. — A happy 52nd birthday to Terry Francona, who likely will celebrate by getting to the park ridiculously early to get ready for the the game.

The Sox are 4-4 on their manager's birthday including a 2009 doubleheader sweep of the Twins. Other baseball notables born this day include Mickey Vernon, Jimmy Key, Mickey Morandini, Moose Haas and David Clyde.

(Yes, I realize Mickey Morandini is not necessarily a baseball notable. I just like picturing the late Harry Kalas saying "Mick-ey Mor-an-dini.")

Last night was the 1,800th career game Francona has managed, 61st in baseball history. He is sixth among active managers in victories with 946 and one of 22 men in history with two World Series titles.

So happy birthday to the manager.

The leaving 20 base runners on per game HAS GOT TO STOP!!

The clutch is stuck for the Red Sox

ANAHEIM, Calif. — The Red Sox are hitting .190 with a .281 on-base percentage and a .256 slugging percentage in 195 plate appearances with runners in scoring position this season.

That's the worst batting average in baseball in such situations, the second-worst on-base percentage and the second-worst slugging percentage.

There's no gift-wrapped explanation for it other than that the Sox aren't hitting very well (.237/.335/.375) in any situation this season. The good news is those statistics tend to even out over time. The Sox were .268/.339/.451 overall last season and .269/.361/.458 with RISP.

A look at the hitters this season with RISP, from best to worst:

Scutaro 3-8

Gonzalez 5-17

Saltalamacchia 4-14

Pedroia 3-11

Lowrie 3-11

Ellsbury 3-16

Ortiz 3-17

Cameron 1-6

Drew 2-14, 7 K

Youkilis 2-18, 6 K, 2 GIDP

Varitek 1-10, 6 K

Crawford 2-20, 4 K

McDonald 0-6

You don't need to be Bill James to figure out that Drew, Youkilis and Crawford are fairly important parts of the offense and are 6 for 52 (.115).

Drew is a career .276 career hitter with RISP, Crawford .308 and Youkilis .328. These guys didn't have their clutchability stolen overnight by Dr. Evil. They're just going through a bad time.

The day is coming when this turns and some poor group of pitchers will pay a harsh price. That's how it works. But for now maybe the Sox should have their runners crouch down so the guy at the plate can't see them.

(And for you smart SABR guys out there, I know there's no such thing as clutch. That's kind of the point of this, to show it's an anomaly.)

Salty is hitting .285 with RISP???? He's hitting better with RISP than Pedroia AND Lowrie. Damnnn.

I'm going to stop bashing him until the rest of the offense picks things up.
