Not to speak too soon, but the Sox have passed the Yankees into 2nd place, .5 games back of TB. 3rd best record in the AL.

After such a horrible start that's remarkable indeed. Especially with more than a week to go before the end of May.

I don't know what your talking about. I specifically remember people saying the season was over after the 2-11 start. How can they have surpassed the Yankees if they aren't playing games anymore? I think sir you are delusional and should seek out psychiatric help immediately.(;))

They are playing some good ball right now and the offense is really starting to look smooth. Inter league play came at the perfect time for the Red Sox IMO. The offense should really be tuned in after beating around NL pitching.

There's so much to say but I'm just going to mention a couple things:

- 8-2 last 10 games

- 4 game win streak

- Salty and Varitek looking much better

- Crawford is on fire

- Offense is explosive(this is what I was expecting coming into the season)

- First place belongs to...yours truly the Boston Red Sox. Usually I wouldn't care especially since it's May but after that 2-10 start that's fantastic.

Right now the sox offense is unconscious. They will come back down to earth and within the next week people will be complaining about it again

Jackso is trying to find negatives in this team, and all he can come up with is "They will come down to earth"

Sorry, Jackso. The Sox are the best team in the AL this year, easily the AL East, and now that Colon is down, the Sox will run away with this division.

Gonzo had 15 RBI in April, 31 in May, and has 14 in June (on track for 35 this month). He has 25 games left until the All Star Break. If he averages 1.6 RBI per game from now until the ASB, he will hit 100 by the ASB. As hot as Ellsbury is right now, and with Pedroia and Scutaro catching fire, this is very possible.

What an achievement that would be, to drive in your 100th run by the ASB.

Through 65 Games:

Player A: .259/.361/.526/.887, 18 HR, 57 RBI

Player B: .325/.395/.624/1.019, 17 HR, 43 RBI

Player B is obviously David Ortiz this year.

Player A? Oh, just David Ortiz circa 2006, just the year he hit 54 bombs. I can't believe Papi is OPS'ing .230 points higher right now than he was in 2006.

Can Big Papi hit 45 again?? It's definitely not out of the question!

If you can't be optimistic about that, GTFO.

Good stuff right here.

-9 game win streak(highest of the season)

-A-God with 9 straight games with an RBI(ties Jason Barlett's for the longest RBI streak in 2011, longest streak by a Red Sox player is Manny with 10 in 2002)

-Red Sox are averaging 5.38 runs per game

-54 times in David Ortiz's Red Sox career he had a double and a HR.

- God(37) and Ortiz(36) own two of the four highest extra base hit totals.

-Over the last 9 games the Red Sox have outscored their opponets(breathe)...83-36 my god.

-We've scored at least 14 runs in 5 games this season(no other team has done this more than twice this season)

That's just the appetizer, more to come.

Oh, just another AL Player of the Week, that's all.

This release from Major League Baseball:

Boston Red Sox center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury has been named the American League Player of the Week for the period ending June 12th.

In six games, Ellsbury batted .467 (14-for-30) with three doubles, one home run, four RBI and 10 runs scored on his way to earning his first career A.L. Player of the Week honor and the third in as many weeks for the Red Sox. Teammates Carl Crawford (week ending May 30th) and David Ortiz (week ending June 6th) each captured the award the previous two weeks

The fifth-year veteran led the A.L. in runs scored and hits, was tied for second in stolen bases (2), was third in batting average and was tied for fourth in on-base percentage (.500) and total bases (20). On June 7th at Yankee Stadium, Ellsbury led off with a home run and later doubled as the Red Sox topped the Yankees, 6-4, in the opener of a three-game set. It was his fourth career leadoff home run and his first since September 26, 2008. On Thursday, the 23rd overall pick of the 2005 First-Year Player Draft went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored as the Red Sox defeated the Yankees, 8-3, sweeping their rivals for the second time in 2011. Boston has won eight of nine games this season against the Bronx Bombers, with Ellsbury hitting .371 (13-for-35) with four doubles, one home run, six RBI and seven runs scored against the Yanks this season.

On June 10th, the Madras, Oregon native went 3-for-5 with a double and three runs scored as Boston topped the Blue Jays, 5-1, at the Rogers Centre. It was ninth time this season that Ellsbury has collected at least three hits in a game. On Sunday, the Oregon State University product singled twice and scored three runs as the Red Sox defeated the Toronto Blue Jays, 14-1, extending their current winning streak to nine games and completing their third consecutive sweep.

Ellsbury is in the midst of a 10-game hitting streak, batting .429 (21-for-49) with four doubles, one home run, six RBI and five stolen bases over the stretch, and has recorded multiple hits in six consecutive games. He has hit safely in 16 of his last 17 contests.

Heading into play today, the 27-year-old leads the A.L. in stolen bases (24), is second in hits (84) and doubles (21), third in runs scored (49), sixth in batting average (.318) and 11th in on-base percentage (.376).

Cuban finally wins one after spending a jillion dollars down there. The Celtics are dead. Ainge killed them trading Perkins. And now they have Doc for another 5 years--a guy who can't develop a bench.

What is happening in sports is unexpected teams are winning championships. At least unexpected by the media. Stay away from those big star, big money media teams. Last year it was the no name Giants winning in baseball. A team team. Who will win this year? Could be the Guardians--another no name team. Maybe the Red Sox who are now playing the way everyone predicted. The Red Sox are not a no name team--but despite that, they still have a good chance to win it all. :)

Sorry, Mavericks have been competitive for over 10 years now, they're not a no-name team, if that's what you're getting at.

Also, the Guardians have already begun collapsing, whereas the Giants had two dominant aces on their staff, on top of a solid lineup. Just because the little guy wins sometimes, does not mean the little guy will continue to win.

I'm sort of confused what you're getting at.

I think every Red Sox fan wants to be upbeat and optimistic about the team this year, but in my case I have this strange feeling as to what I saw those first 12 games this year. Right now we look like world beaters but we can't be this good, can we? Not any more terrific than we were terrible earlier in the season. Are we somewhere in between? My optimisitc bent is based, believe it or not, on what the Yankees did after the ASB in 2009. They went on a two-and-a-half month tear and then ripped through the playoffs to a WS Title. My feeling is if that team could do it then so could we, but I still have some reservations about the back end of our rotation and a few cohorts in the bullpen. I think by the ASB this year we will have a real fix on just how good our team really is. Just my opinion though.

I think the .591 winning percentage is pretty accurate. 96 wins should win the division by 5 or 6 games. There's more room for the Yankees to struggle the rest of the way than improve. Too many old body parts on that team will be strained/torn/bruised/broken to keep them running on all cylinders. Whatever trades they pick up won't make them better than the Sox.

As far as the 0-6 start goes, remember the Yankees and Rays have both had 6+ game losing streaks this season as well. It happens.

Realistically, this team is in some trouble. With 7 games upcoming against Tampa, the playoffs are not even assured. I heard Mike Lupica say this morning that the Sox are no longer a lock for the playoffs. I don't think he is being emotional or reactionary. Look at the pitching matchups against Tampa this weekend. The best matchup that we have is the Lackey game. We have a terrible matchup for today's game in Toronto. We could start the weekend with a 6 game loss column lead over Tampa with 7 games to play against them. Concern is rational and justified at this point in time.
