How long are we going to live with the subpar play from both?

I know its early. but Scutaro was a career utility player who had one FLUKE year, he wasn't anything special last year and has been absolutely dreadful this year, he hasn't even got on base once this year and is very far from sure handed in the field. I am officially on the start Jed Lowrie band wagon. If Lowrie doesn't work out at the plate at least he is pretty good fielder.

at the catching position I dont know really.. salty sucks, varitek is a good backup but who else can we trade for/call up? as far as I know we dont have any top prospect catchers or anything.. I guess give salty more time, he at least has some potential unlike scutaro who has been a utility man his whole damn career.

Salty will turn it around. He is still young, he has a lot of potential, and hasn't had the oppurtunity to prove himself as a starter yet. Things at SS will change. I expect after a couple months for Lowrie to probably get more playing time, starting with platooning and eventually taking the starting position. And Iglesias will be around at the end of the year, I'm betting.

I don't really know much about Salty. So I will not offer any opinion. However the SS is a certified stiff. He sucks at fielding throwing weak hitting too. If he played his last game as a meber of the Sox I'd be thrilled. He really is the biggest waste.

If the rest of the lineup were producing then the issue wouldn't be about Scutaro and Salty.

OBP so far:

.438 Youkilis

.333 Pedroia

.313 Ortiz

.294 Gonzalez

.286 Drew

.286 Lowrie

.278 Ellsbury

.250 Cameron

.250 McDonald

.231 Salty

.188 Crawford

.000 Scutaro

Only one player has performed at or above his expected OBP and that's Youk. It's a pretty crude measurement overall, but it is indicative of the way the bats have come out.

I'm not that worried overall, but I don't think that history smiles on teams that start 0-4 to start the season.

 'expected OBP level'

3% of the season is finished.

I wasn't making a point about large sample size. I was pointing out that it isn't Scutaro and Salty that are responsible for the losses, and if there weren't losses nobody would be complaining about the offensive output of high defensive-spectrum positions. Does that make sense?

 ... otherwise you would see me a lot more concerned about Scutaro's .000 OBP! Clearly I'm not saying that's where this team will land.

If someone thinks those two are to blame for the losses, no amount of logic or explanation will convince them otheriwse.

My biggest problem with the SS situation is that Lowrie is rotting away on the bench. He's at the point in his career where he NEEDS at bats and really hasn't gotten a chance to prove himself because of the wrist injury. Its such a waste. Scutaro is a below average SS at best, let the young guy with a high ceiling prove himself. I just don't get letting a young guy rot on the bench.

Just a quick question, how many games are we into the season? (rhetorical)

I'm sure you'd also want the Cardinals to get rid of Pujols because he is slumping right now as well. Give it some time at least.

It's not one position--or two positions. It's the whole team that's underachieving. A poor start.

You have to do what the media so far has not done--point your finger at the management.

Their spring training methods--the emphasis on the farm system--not getting the regulars fine tuned for a fast start.

Not getting the batting order--in order.

The starting schedule for the Red Sox this year was brutal: three games in steamy Texas against the best offense in baseball last year. Then three games in Alaska, Ohio. Pretty tough on guys who have been basking in the sun in Ft Myers--some of whom look like they could use a couple more weeks there getting in shape for the season.

The start of the season is always a fantasy nightmare. Pujols can't hit a lick, while Teixeira, a slow starter, has four dingers and Cruz has five. And, Bell, the closer for that horrendous SD team, has five saves.

But just wait. Teix will come back to earth when the Yankees hit the road, and Cruz will pull a muscle and get on the DL--as he did most of last year.

There are two simple solutions to all this. First of all, platoon Varitek and Salty. None of thise "Salty is our primary catcher" garbage. Tito may be a player's manager, but these two guys both have one-sided splits which complement eachother, this should be a no-brainer, and overplaying Salty is a terrible idea.

Then, play Lowrie. Nuff said.

Can we start Lowrie yet? Scutaro sucks, yeah he had a hit tonight but everybody watching the game knows it was a cheesy little infield single he barely hit. please start lowrie

What do the Marlins have to do with this?

I think he was mentioning Buck as a possible catcher acquisition.. I'm not ready to give up on Salty yet though, its been 4 games (for him), Id like to see him a little bit more before deciding he sucks and we need another catcher.

I wouldnt mind Buck, but they just got him, i they think would want to keep him.. im thinking of a guy like kurt suzuki, jose molina or someone like that. Im pissed we didnt get russell martin, he looks good.

and btw im pretty sure meh was saying "marlins and john buck" becaause he was trying to imply marlins as the trade partner and they would be trading buck..

how is bucks defense? I know he can rake at the plate

lol finally agree on something with you. Scutaro, what a f*** up that guy is. Lowrie has talent can he play? can we put the best product on the field? or do we need 0-6 to prove it

I know that. He sounded like he was talking about Buck and someone else.

No I'm saying you could get help from the Malrins via John Buck. Sorry I was on an elliptal machine last night and got bored and was surfing around on my phone.

kurt suzuki

Why would they give him up? If you had to trade for him Beane would ask for the world anyways. Not like the A's aren't good, unlike the Marlins.

Sounds like Sox could have some interest in Pudge

Fox Sports' Ken Rosenthal believes Ivan Rodriguez could be an eventual trade target for the Red Sox.

With the Jarrod Saltalamacchia show off to a horrid start and Jason Varitek no longer able to play every day, Boston could hit the market for a catcher sooner rather than later. With Wilson Ramos looking ready for the starting job in Washington, it likely wouldn't be all that difficult to pry Pudge away from the Nats.
