Jed Lowrie told reporters that it felt like his shoulder "popped out of the socket" on Thursday night.

Not good. Lowrie had been dealing with a shoulder bruise for a couple of weeks, but this sounds like something completely different. And far worse. It seems probable that the talented 27-year-old is going to be placed on the 15-day disabled list. Drew Sutton could be on the way up.

Lowrie on the 15-day disabled list

Some injury notes from manager Terry Francona's pregame press conference:

* Shortstop Jed Lowrie was placed on the disabled list with a shoulder injury, and Drew Sutton has been brought back up to replace him on the roster.

"Jed got an MRI this morning, and the MRI was actually pretty good," Francona said. "Structurally, it didn't look like there was any significant damage, which is really good."

Francona said the results of Lowrie's MRI will be sent to Dr. Lewis Yokum in California. Lowrie will rest and start receiving treatment on his shoulder. Francona didn't give a name for the type of shoulder injury it is, but he said there's swelling, bruising, and a loss of strength.

"Regardless of what we've found, when you take a swing like that and it hurts like that, we better slow him down a little bit," Francona said.

I've had that feeling before when I swung a bat real hard during gym class in high school. That pain is intense. It ended up happening to both shoulders since I switch hit, and my shoulders have never been the same sense. For years there was constant pain and sometimes I couldn't lift my arms above my head. I still get occasional pain and a clicking feeling. I hope that doesn't happen to Jed.

Jose Iglesias, SS BOS

News: Red Sox SS prospect Jose Iglesias isn't doing much offensively since being shipped back to Triple-A Pawtucket in late May. Iglesias finished May with a .238 average and is batting a season-low .206 through 17 June games. He is hitting .224 with a .262 OBP in 52 games for Pawtucket.

Analysis: Offense is not Iglesias' strong suit, but the Red Sox figured he would develop offensive talent as he progressed in the minors. Well, his batting numbers have mostly regressed since last season. Had he been hitting, the Red Sox might have considered recalling Iglesias when Jed Lowrie got hurt. Iglesias is a great defender, but if he comes to the majors with weak offensive skills, then he won't be much of a Fantasy option. Iglesias remains nothing more than a long-term Fantasy keeper.

Trade Iglesias to the Mets for Reyes before he is exposed and goes on the junk heap with so many other prospects that went bust.

Reyes or Hanley Ramirez, if available. Hanley is cheaper. More of a power hitter. Reyes has been having a Superman contract year.

Iglesias is a highly tradeable commodity right now. Everybody knows he's great defensively. And he MIGHT improve offensively. Plus he's cheap cheap.

You don't figure the Mets to trade Reyes to the Yankees. Most likely he stays in the NL out west.

Theo should make a play for either, though Reyes may want too much money.

Nopt sure I agree that Reyes is cheaper. Hanley has more contract value, and the Marlins are going to bargain on that basis.

Reyes is cheaper since he only has half a year left. But that doesn't mean Hanley is that much more expensive, since he comes with a ton of baggage (not a shortstop for much longer, not a good personality, etc etc). And lengthy contracts are only valuable if they provide cheaper contracts than the persons' value, which would be why Votto would be easier to trade/get more value from a trade than A-Gon. Hanley's contract probably does provide some surplus value, but not by a large amount.

Varitek has the second highest OPS of any catcher in the majors since May 1st. It is still speculation, but the shoulder injury probably had a lot to do with his hitting issues in April. Now that he's getting a good amount of rest, I see him continuing to do well as the season progress.

Red Sox SS Jose Iglesias left Sunday's game against Yankee Triple-A affiliate Scranton/Wilkes-Barre after being hit in the helmet by an Andrew Brackman fastball.

Iglesias immediately hit the dirt and stayed there for a few minutes, but was able to walk off under his own power. Preliminary testing was encouraging, and it looks like Iglesias avoided serious injury. The top prospect will return to the majors when rosters expand in September, if not before then.

Red Sox prospect shortstop Jose Iglesias (concussion) is expected to be activated from the disabled list with Triple-A Pawtucket on Thursday.

Iglesias has been sidelined since suffering a concussion when he was hit in the helmet by a fastball on July 3. The Cuban shortstop has taken a step back in his development this season, batting just .227/.275/.245 with a .519 OPS over 249 plate appearances.

Iglesias looked pretty good in Boston. I wouldn't call that a step back. Look at Reddick.

He didn't hit much better in Pawtucket. Iglesias is already an all-star defensively.

He didn't hit much better in pawtucket? Only if all you're looking at is batting average.

Reddick in AAA: .230/.333/.508

Iglesias in Pawtucket: .227/.275/.245

We wouldn't tolerate that line in MLB to begin with, so sure, let's go ahead and promote the kid to a higher level where he's even more out of his depth offensively.

I know exactly what will happen if we call Iglesias up. For about a month we'll be in love with the glove, and after that we'll be bewailing the black hole in the lineup. It's how fans operate here.

Try. Navarro. At. Short. He can hit, at least by shotstop standards. He can play the position. He has something other than a bag of Jell-O attached to his right shoulder. What the freak is there to lose?

Jose Iglesias (concussion) is back in the lineup at Triple-A Pawtucket on Thursday night.

Iglesias missed three weeks after suffering a concussion when he was hit in the head by a pitch. The Cuban shortstop has a rough .519 OPS this year for the PawSox.

Salty will get better, but I expect to see Lowrie gone Sunday, along with Iglesias' call up. Lowrie can equal bullpen help or right field future. Call me crazy, but I see Lowrie moving and Igesias moving up to learn and get some experience in the pros.

I'll call you crazy then. =)

1. Lowrie is cost-controlled and a ML-level player. There's no way he'll only net bullpen help in return.

2. We already have players for the future in right field. Two, in fact.

3. Iglesias moving up will not help his development at all. He hasn't adjusted to hitting AAA pitching, he won't do any better in the majors.

4. Can't trade players on the DL.

5. Lowrie is still better than Iglesias right now. Without marked improvement, I don't think Iglesias can hack it at the ML level.

Lowrie could be back by this weekend?

Lowrie making his way in Pawtucket

August, 2, 2011

By Scott Barboza

PAWTUCKET, R.I. -- Many moons have passed since Jed Lowrie challenged Marco Scutaro for the starting shortstop job earlier this season, spurred by a terrific month of April when he hit .368 in 21 games.

Yet, as has become a nagging trend in his early career, Lowrie again found himself on the disabled list following an on-field collision with Carl Crawford. He was placed on the DL on June 17 with nerve damage in his left shoulder.

Lowrie's back in action for the first time since June 16, making a string of rehab appearances at Triple-A Pawtucket. He went 0-for-2 while playing three innings at short in Monday night's game against the Louisville Bats at McCoy Stadium. Lowrie told reporters he felt good following Monday's game.

He went 1-for-3 with a single and run scored as the designated hitter in Pawtucket's 4-3 walk-off win on Tuesday. Lowrie batted in the third spot was lifted for pinch hitter Ryan Lavarnway in the seventh inning as planned.

"I'm just trying to get my timing back, getting a look against live pitching," said Lowrie, who started 41 of his 55 games at Boston this year.

Lowrie is scheduled to play shortstop again on Thursday and will make another appearance with the PawSox on Friday before an evaluation is made.

Wow. That'd be nice if Lowrie could make it back by this weekend and at least be available for the game against CC. He's a huge addition vs LHP, especially when you use him instead of Scutaro.

Are we gonna keep all three shortstops when Jed returns?

I don't know, but what else we would do? Jed and Aviles can both play 2B, SS, and 3B. Option back Randy Williams when Lowrie comes up.

That leaves a bench of Lowrie, Aviles, McDonald, and Varitek.

Bullpen of Pap - Bard - Albers - Aceves - Morales - Wheeler, and a 6 man rotation of Beckett - Lester - Lackey - Bedard - Miller - Wakefield.

The question is, when Drew comes off the DL, who goes? Maybe he just doesn't come off the DL until roster expansion on 9/1. But then who ducks out on the postseason roster?

We can still make trades right? They just have to do the whole waivers thing? You think we can flip Scut for a reliever or should we keep him for depth seeing as how Lowrie is the hitter's equivalent of Rich Harden?

They are considering also playing Aviles in the OF' date=' so McDonald would probably get DFA'd.[/quote']

That'd be nice, though D-Mac doesn't suck quite as much and is a decent OF'er.
