That's not really fair. Cashman was against the signing because he thought it was a bad use of resources, not because he thought Soriano would be ineffective.

Anyway, missed the entire game ... but heard Lillibridge made two incredible plays. Couple really bad losses in a row.

I know, I was just messing with Jacko.

Ah OK ... just wanted to set the record straight there, because I figured it would be talked about with all of Soriano's struggles.

I turned over just in time to see Lillibridge make those two incredible catches. I actually thought the first one was better than the second simply because he crashed into the wall, but both were awesome. And he's usually an infielder right? Going from infield to outfield isn't as easy as some might think. Went back and forth a lot in HS playing both.

He smoked the ball. Doesn't matter that he swung at the first pitch. Just got unlucky.

True, but late in a game you want to show a little more resistance you know? If the outcome was something like a groudout or popout to the infield I think you'd agree with me more.

I thought the second catch was better, because Cano absolutely smoked that ball. It was a low line drive, not a fly ball or high drive. It got out to the outfield in a flash. I thought that he had buried the ball in the corner and the game was over. I didn't think anyone could react fast enough to get that ball before it got down. I was hoping only that the OF would be able to prevent the ball from getting to the wall to preserve the tie.

Definitely. Both catches were amazing, no doubt. The 2nd one, a little sinking line drive right down the line? Whew. That's a tough ball to make a read on, much less make a game saving diving catch. The Yankees caught a little Red Sox luck last night.

A little more resistance? That sounds pretty dumb. He got a cockshot, he ripped it and the OFer made a he'll of a play. If he swung at a ball over his head and popped it up, I'd agree, but he got a first pitch down the middle

The hypothetical game goes two ways. What if that was the best pitch for him to swing at during the AB, and he was forced to swing at a ball right on the outside corner later in the AB? He got a good pitch to hit and he hit it hard. It doesn't matter what number pitch it was. That's all you can ask.

Exactly. The issue I have with first pitch swinging is when Sox hitters swing at a pitcher's pitch and put a weakly hit ball in play. I have no problem if it's a cookie and they mash it, regardless of the result.

Not to mention it was the bottom of the 9th and the probable final hitter of the outing, so it's not like you're trying to work the count to get a pitch count up and get into the bullpen. Plus, it was Cano hitting and Swisher behind him, and Swish had already struck out 3 times in the game. If I was the Yankees, I would have rather seen Cano hit with men on 1st and 2nd than to see Swish hit with the bases loaded after seeing their production yesterday.

Yankee booth, discussing Dwayne Wise's catch to save Buehrle's perfect game:

Idiot 1: "The last out of a perfect game."

15 seconds pass

Idiot 1: "Oh it wasn't the last out, it was the 9th inning."

Idiot 2: "Second out."

Idiot 1: "Second out, that's right."

It was the first out.

Hahaha, the norm for the YES Network broadcast.
