Figured the ST stuff belonged in a better thread.

Burnett looked pretty good today

If he had sucked, you wouldn't have started this thread ;)

I'm not gonna call Jacko out just yet. He has every right to be happy Burnett is pitching good. He will be an important role for the Yankees and he can't have another 2010 season. Besides they're losing 5-1 to the Astros. Let's cut him some slack for now.

No way Rookie of the Year. I've "known" him too long and will ALWAYS give him grief

Except that Banuelos did look pretty good... well except for that 2-2 pitch to Varitek that went all the way to the backstop...and even that pitch had some good stuff behind it

Truth is that while Jacko might overhype or exaggerate some things, nobody gives him credit when his points are valid. It's pretty much a lost cause for him. You can't fault him for his enthusiasm, and we're definitely all a little guilty of the things that most of you ridicule him for.

But back to the game. Colon looked pretty good again and A-Rod continues his hot spring. Despite the 4-run deficit (AT THE MOMENT :D ), it's still spring and these are encouraging signs for those players.

Edit: Make that a 3-run deficit ;)

Peter Gammons called ManBan "Johan Santana with a curveball." Regardless' date=' the kid is dynamite and will be a big league starter come 2012[/quote']

son of a bitch. I guess we can all agree Banuelos will either be dead of have his arm fall off by June.

Just read a NY Post piece on the organizational push for Gardner to lead off. I have to agree with this wholeheartedly. The guy sees a ton of pitches (led the league at 4.61P/PA) and posted an OBP of .383 last yr in his first full big league season. He also finished the yr hurt. Now, fully healthy, he should march closer to that .400OBP and at the top of the order with his speed, he'd be a pest. I dont move Jeter too far. I'd put him in the 2 slot since I do think he has somewhat of a bounceback offensive season. My ideal lineup is...

1. Gardner

2. Jeter

3. Teixeira

4. Rodriguez

5. Cano

6. Swisher

7. Granderson

8. Posada

9. Martin

with Montero subbing in for both Posada and Martin. My guess is that the season will finish with Jesus starting as well.

Other good news out of Yankee camp, Montero looks the part of a big league catcher. He isnt a plus defender by any means, but he worked on his quickness in the offseason and looks more limber behind the plate. There is growing optimism within the scouting community that he actually could pull off being a big league catcher on a regular basis. His arm was never a question, it was his blocking skills that were always in question. If Montero does prove to be a pro defender, then we might see Austin Romine traded during the season. He's my pick for bounceback minor league player as he played in an abysmal environment for hitters and posted obscene away splits vs terrible home splits. In Scranton, he should bounce back to .300BA and double digit homer production. My guess is he will be the lead in a deal for a pitcher

That's why you have to listen to what Frankie says, by far the best scout out there. First on the Trout train, first on the ever growing Montero will catch train, always gace props to Banuelos, etc. The guy knows his stuff.

I have never seen Montero catch, but it sounds like he has a long, long way to go in developing his defensive game. The other day the Yankee announcing crew was praising him for looking more comfortable behind the plate. They were talking about crouching behind the plate and positioning himself. They said that he looked more confident back there. I thought that was a very odd compliment, and that must mean that he is atrocious with regard to meaningful catching skills. Saying that a catcher has improved his crouch is like saying that a batter looks more comfortable holding his bat. It's meaningless.

Also please stop using this space to aid the Yankee FO propaganda campaign for their young minor league pitching. None of them are ready for prime time. They are not even close and most will not accomplish anything beyond a cup of coffee at the major league level. Stop spinning the propaganda. You and I know that they are nothing more than Yankee FO media creations. Major league GMs had better not be fooled by that fact if they don't want to be royally ripped off at the trading dead line.
