2011 College Baseball Thread

College baseball opens up Friday! Yes.

 

Anyone going to any games? Mississippi State has four games this weekend - 2 vs Akron and 2 vs Lamar. We have 35 home games this season. I plan on going to almost all of them.

 

Also, the NCAA has changed the composition of the bats this season and offense is supposed to be way down, but we'll see. Something interesting to keep an eye on at least.

I'll definitely go to some games. Maryland isn't any good, but we play Florida State and some other good ACC teams at home. Baseball is baseball, and it's free. First home game for us is Wednesday against Navy.

ACC has some really good baseball. FSU, UNC, GT, Miami, Clemson... then there are some pretty bad teams like Duke and WF. I'd think Maryland will be at least respectable.

 

Our five SEC home series this year are going to be amazing - #23 Auburn, #3 Florida, #8 South Carolina (defending national champs), Alabama, and #19 LSU. Gulp.

Beat Akron 11-0 today on a 1 hit shutout. Game was two hours flat. That was fun.

Weather was absolutely perfect all weekend. Temps in the 70's, clear skies, slight breeze.

 

Only 3 games, so tough to really gauge a difference in the new bats.

Mikie Mahtook homer twice in game 1 and 1 each in games 2 and 3.

as a team, we hit 6 homers over the weekend, with Wake Forest hitting 2.

 

Our young pitching staff had a good 1st showing.

 

True freshman Gaussman was throwing 97 consistently, and touched 98 a few times.

Today another true freshman (Kurt McCune) went into the 6th with a no-hitter.

His final stat line was 6 IP, 1h, 0r, 0bb.

I heard that. What a beautiful weekend it was. Made even more enjoyable by whooping Ole Miss in basketball (again)...

 

Mississippi State went 4-0 this weekend.

2-0 over Lamar

10-1 over Akron

17-2 over Lamar

 

We've got Northwestern State tomorrow and three this weekend vs Belmont. Our first 14 games are at home so it's awesome to be watching baseball consistently.

other than our sweep, the only college baseball I heard about was the kid from ASU that broke his vertebrae and that James Madison hit like a billion home runs this weekend.

Mississippi State beat Northwestern State 6-4 today to improve to 5-0. Our RF had a catch that probably should've been #1 on SportsCenter's top ten plays, but college baseball gets next to nothing in tv coverage...

Is it just me or do they new bats sound totally different? To me they sound more like wood. You don't hear the ping much any more.

 

Anyway, Mississippi State is 8-1 now. Took 2 of 3 from Belmont (I thought they were a pretty decent team) last weekend and beat Alcorn State today.

 

We play a four game series this weekend - 2 vs Iowa and 2 vs Georgia State.

 

#1, #2, and #4 in the polls this week are all in the SEC East. Wow.

Still can't believe yall got swept at home last weekend. Florida may win it all this year. That's who I think will anyway.

i really wanted to go and see it before it left Rosenblatt.

 

was in the process of making plans to go back in '09, but life got in the way, and I had to cancel.

 

was awesome to watch my Tigers win the whole thing on TV, but couldn't help but wonder how amazing it would have been to be there when it happened.

Nutriaitch, sorry about your LSU boys not getting in. I thought that was pretty ridiculous. The selection committee really sucked this year, in particular obviously sticking it to the SEC in a lot of ways. Looks like they're doing their best to keep the SEC from winning a 3rd straight national title.

 

I hate the NCAA.
