This is absolutely f***ing humongous from a Yankee perspective. VMart was the #2 offensive catcher in the game, and obviously had some defensive shortcomings. The thing is, all internal candidates have those same shortcomings without the offensive upside. This is a gigantic step down in the lineup. If Beltre leaves and the sox are shut out on the Werth front, then 2011 will truly be a bridge yr

We legitimately argued about this with you atleast ten times, and you never accepted him as #2 until now.

Actually, I was assuming they were dropping Beltre/Vmart for the picks to begin with. But losing out to a 4/50 is disgraceful, I thought they'd budge at 4/52.

I accepted it at the end of this season. This was the first season that VMart out OPS'd Posada, meaning he has surpassed him. I wrote it awhile ago after we got knocked out

The Red Sox do however' date=' get the Tigers 19th overall pick and a very high supplemental round pick. At least it's something.[/quote']

Yeah, you're not going to get much better than a 19th overall pick. If I recall, the first 15 are protected, and can't be taken through the FA process.

And, it's the 19th pick (rather than the 16th pick) because there are 3 added picks to the first round because of not signing first rounders from last years draft. So it's the best first rounder you can get. And even then, that's because of a tie breaker with Oakland due to 2009 records.

Unless the Tigers sign another big fa, then it's a 2nd round pick. At least that's what I read.

Well now that V-Mart is on the Tigers and looks like Salty is the starting catcher is this the "final nail in the coffin" Jacko?

The sox rotation is good enough for them to win, even with a lineup that drops off considerably after Ortiz. I used the nail in the coffin reference when your best hitters went down with injury one after another, and I was right. This time around, I will wait to see how they do in the rest of the period. And I will also wait to see what we do. If NYY keeps Jeter and Mo and gets Lee, then the division will be all but wrapped up

I think that the only chance that happens is if they sign Lee, Soriano, or Werth, and Werth seems like the only one with a shot at being on the Tigers.

Having two aces will help, but the rest of the rotation is shot, the offense is getting older, and the bullpen isn't a prize either. The yankees have just as much work to do this offseason as the sox.

How is the rest of the rotation 'shot'? Sure, Pettitte missed time last year, but it wasn't an arm injury, and he posted a 130 ERA+. And then there's Hughes, who posted a 102 ERA+ in his first year as a full time starter, and should improve as his change-up and curveball progress.

You had the division "wrapped up" by mid-May last year....and the Rays won it. Just a reminder.

Keep telling yourself that to make you sleep at night. The Yankee pen, even without Wood, was pretty solid last season. The Yankee rotation, with Pettitte looking like he's coming back and with Lee would probably be the best in baseball. And the Yankee lineup is already the best around. Where is the work to be done? Just askin'

I honestly believe they win the division in 2011. But don't forget that Burnett is garbage, Pettite won't pitch like that forever, and Hughes had far too many innings on him.

I think it's a big mistake that the club didn't want Martinez back in Boston. Losing their number 3 hitter and downgrading from VMart to Salty is a huge loss.

I agree, however, I think that this is Part 1 of a many chapter sequence of events. If this was the only move made in the offseason and if the regular season began in a few weeks, then we'd be in trouble, but I think that this "move" is part of many moves to come and as such, should not be judged until the final process is complete.
