Boston Red Sox owners meet Liverpool council to discuss Reds stadium plans Read More

A DECISION on Liverpool FC’s stadium plans must be made within six months, city council bosses ruled today.

Leader Joe Anderson met with Reds new owners New England Sports Ventures (NESV) yesterday before the game against Blackburn.

Top of the agenda was discussions on whether the Boston Red Sox chiefs will modernise Anfield or build a new stadium.

With planning permission for the proposed 60,000-capacity Stanley Park ground due to expire in April, Liverpool council is asking for a decision before that date.

Cllr Anderson met with NESV bosses for a 90-minute breakfast chat where he was introduced to Tom Werner, new Anfield directors David Ginsberg and Michael Gordon, and Red Sox chief executive Sam Kennedy.

The new owners have not set a deadline on when a stadium decision might be made. Both sides, said Cllr Anderson, agreed patience was needed as NESV undertook a financial assessment of the club’s position.

And even a potential groundshare with Everton entered the discussion.

Cllr Anderson told the ECHO: “The meeting went really well. I let them know how the council and Anfield residents had gone the extra mile to make the park available and how we had waited so long for things to happen.

“I said I couldn’t make promises to allow for any time that was truly not needed or exaggerated.

“They’ve rightly asked for a bit of time to assess the financial situation and for us to be patient.

Personally I want them to redevelop Anfield, there's just too much history there, there's no reason why anfield cannot be extended across anfield road and the Main stand made larger, could easily get 60,000 with some inventive architecture. The kop has to be kept just the way it is.

I'm not up for groundshare with Everton tho, I think Nesv should take some time to look into the 'football quarter' project proposed by both lfc/efc fan groups.

I have only one question for the new owners on the subject of ground share with Everton and it is this.

WOULD YOU LIKE TO SHARE YOUR STADIUM WITH THE NEW YORK YANKEES. No i didnt think so.

I'd love to have a stadium like the Bernabeu - 80,000 spectators, or in our case fanatics singing their nuts off. The Camp Nou imo suffers a distinct lack of atmosphere as it caters for 100,000, which imo is too much. Others may disagree.

Anfield is not fit for purpose, as it stands it is hemmed in and not great for access. Merely adding to it imo just compounds a problem of asthetics and atmosphere. Stadiums these days being all seater are restrictive and certainly don't lend themselves to the ambience of former hallowed days. We desperately need a new Kop, it would be madness to stuff a 1970's engine in a modern F1 racing car - we need a brand new mega stadium.

In terms of a new build the advantages are numerous - increased ticket revenue, increased possibilities in terms of sponsorship, increased prestige, increased local jobs, increased safety, increased merchandise. One big mega attraction to put it mildly. Also we could host more international games and other sporting events.

Anfield will always be nostalgic but no great team was made simply because it was shackled to history, we need to look forward, we need to compete.
