Look at Hughes career at Arlington. He was dominate. IMO it was an easy decision to let him start game 2 in a ballpark he owns in.

Compared to Pettitte, Hughes was an easy choice. However it did not work out. I would make that choice 100% of the time. It prolly works 9 out of 10 times.

So the Yankees were right to base a decision on a 15.1 IP sample size (with only one of those innings coming this year)? Wait, are you Joe Girardi?

Starting your best pitchers the most times outweighs any other argument, and Pettitte is better than Hughes.

I agree that Pettitte is better but. Look at the Stats for Pettitte in Arlington. 3-8 8.22 ERA 1.8 WHIP .335 OPPBA

At Yankee Stadium 3. The New one. 13-7 4.31 ERA 1.4 WHIP .275 OPPBA

Hughes in Arlington 2-0 0.00 ERA. 0.5 WHIP. .064 OPPBA

Although it is a small sample size the horribleness of Pettitte at Arlington would sway my choice.

The sample size is just too small to be considered relevant. And Andy hasn't pitched at Texas since 2008.

Here's an example. Player A is clearly better than Player B. Player A is 0-10 lifetime against the opposing starting pitcher. Player B is 8-10 lifetime against the opposing starting pitcher, with all of those hits coming in previous years. Who would you start?

The Playoffs are a whole different animal then the regular season, you shouldn't look too deeply into whats on paper. Bottom line is, you should have your best pitchers go often as possible.

You agreed with the Yankees' decision before the series...

I said it made sense, because on paper it did. But it turned out to blow up in Girardi's face.

The Yankees could've been up 3-1 now instead of down.

So we're pretty much dead now. Down 3-1 needing CC and Hughes to shut down this buzzsaw of a lineup just to earn a rematch with Lee on his home turf. Girardi f***ed us in the ass tonight. You get 5 solid innings from Burnett and you have a pretty good pen. Not sure how you leave him in for the sixth after he allows the leadoff runner to reach. Now we lose Tex probably for the season and our offense outside of Jeter has been garbage.

I believe they were eliminated from the playoffs in the last week of the season. So 3 months is a bit of a stretch. And don't get butt-hurt when you come to a Red Sox board and people are talking trash about your 200M mega franchise that can't find a SP that can keep them in the game this late in the season.

In the playoffs, you always go with your top two pitchers in games 1 and 2. Regular season stats don't matter. Not only is Pettitte the second best pitcher, but he is also an experienced big game pitcher. There was no decision to be made. It was a slam dunk. The added bonus would have been that Pettitte would have been lined up to pitch game 6 on full rest, giving Girardi the flexibility of pitching CC in games 1,4 and 7 if the series got tight. Pitching Hughes in game 2 over Pettitte based on regular season stats makes as much sense as letting Robertson close a game because Mo blew two saves against the Rangers in the regular season. That would be absurd, and so was starting Hughes.

the pen got ass rapped again tonight

Another great win for Texas. Obviously the better team by far' date=' so far.[/quote']... and Ron Crack Head Washington is doing a better job of managing. He got Tommy "the Pinata" Hunter out of the game at the first sign of trouble and brought in a lefty to face the Yankees. On the other side of the diamond, I hope Girardi gets a 10 year extension.

I think everyone would like Girardi to get a 10-year extension' date=' except for some Yankees fans I'd guess.[/quote']Last night some crazed fan went after ARod. Today, I am expecting 228 or jacko to go after Girardi.:D

They did get hit pretty hard. But you cannot say they'd react the same way if they had a lead. It's a different set of circumstances. Recently, the pen has been lights out. And you have a starter on the hill who nobody has any confidence in who gives you 5 solid innings. You might want to cash out

You're absolutely right, the way this series played out shows it was a no brainer. Girardi really shot his team in the foot by his poor decision making, it makes me wish Torre was still around. Unfortunately Girardi is guaranteed to back now that the Cubs don't need a manager.

His performance in game 4 was Grady Little-eque. Not sure if he is a definite to come back

Yeah Girardi pushed the envelope with Burnett, he should have been hooked after the Guerrero single. He was sharp early in the game but it was obvious he started losing it in the 5th. . Having Logan face Hamilton again after he hit a bullet the night before was also a poor choice. Offensively you can't leave out Cano; who's 7/15 /w 3 HR / 4 RBI but besides the two of them the rest of the line up has really sucked.

You know, I picked the Rangers as my favorite for the AL when they picked up Cliff Lee, but at times I barely believed it-- ie game 1. I'm incredibly surprised that they've steamrolled through both AL East teams.

The NYY fans in right field that obstructed Cruz on Cano's "HR" were pathetic. Cruz got it back off Mitre.

The fact that so many fans left way before the end of the game was sad. Bad mojo.

GO RANGERS!

Quick someone call crybaby police. How is that talking s***? I'm stating a fact that your down 3-1. It's ok your mad because the Yankees have been getting ass raped in the playoffs. This series should be over already but whatever I can wait another day to watch the Yanks get spanked again! I'm doing something similar to what you do. You know troll on a gamethread when we lose? Stop being a hypocrite.

ALCS Game 5 lineups

Permalink|Comments (1) Posted by Amalie Benjamin October 20, 2010 02:13 PM

Here are the lineups for Game 5, a potential elimination game for the Yankees. As expected, the Yankees removed Mark Teixeira from their roster today. They replaced him with Eduardo Nunez. Lance Berkman will start in Teixeira's place at first base.

And there's a bit of Red Sox connection with the first pitch today. The Yankees have brought back Aaron Boone and Bucky Dent to throw out the first pitch. Perhaps there's some confusion as to which team they're facing in the ALCS?

Texas Rangers

1. Elvis Andrus, SS

2. Michael Young, 3B

3. Josh Hamilton, CF

4. Vladimir Guerrero, DH

5. Nelson Cruz, LF

6. Ian Kinsler, 2B

7. Jeff Francoeur, RF

8. Matt Treanor, C

9. Mitch Moreland, 1B

C.J. Wilson, SP

New York Yankees

1. Derek Jeter, SS

2. Nick Swisher, RF

3. Robinson Cano, 2B

4. Alex Rodriguez, 3B

5. Marcus Thames, DH

6. Lance Berkman, 1B

7. Jorge Posada, C

8. Curtis Granderson, CF

9. Brett Gardner, LF

CC Sabathia, SP
