In the end, i think bringing back Varitek was the right choice (after V-Mart signed elsewhere). He'd be the ideal mentor to Salty who they seem to view as the catcher of the future, and since he can still mash lefties, he can certainly make up for some of the young guy's offensive deficiencies.

Salty has a .765 career OPS against RHP despite a couple of abysmal presentations due to injury, but is absolutely horrendous against LHP .592 OPS.

Varitek, as we all know, struggles mightily against righties but still mashes lefties.

Who knows, it may just work.....

Offensively they would probably be okay, but defensively, I don't there is much for Salty to gain by emulating Tek's excruciatingly slow release to second base. One time I actually made a sandwich while waiting for him to release the throw. The big question about Salty is whether he is acceptable defensively.

Description of Sox meeting with Werth today.

I fwe are going to pay Werth Holliday money, they should have just signed Holliday last season. Holliday is a hack in the field, but he could handle LF. It would have precluded the wasting of $16 million on old man Cameron and in the end the FO would have had more money to spend on other needs.

Werth wont be getting Holliday money as.... Holliday > Werth

If we are not prepared to give him Holliday money, they shouldn't even bother exploring it. The article says that he'll be returning to the Phillies if he can't find Holliday money. Do the Phillies have an offer on the table?

and why should we beleive that? he's obviously stating that to get the most money he can .

Everyone starts the bidding a little high. See: 6 years, $150 million for a certain free agent on the market.

I think the Philly thing is just something Boras dropped to try to gain some leverage. Amaro's statements made it sound like he was preparing Philly for a 2011 without Werth (no pun intended).

I'm sure he's saying this out of leverage to try and get every extra dollar he can. You know Boras.

I believe Philly offered him something like 4/60M before he became a FA.

Maybe so, but if we sign this guy for Holliday money, then I would contend that not signing Holliday last year while signing a broken down Cameron to an expensive 2 year contract was a blunder.

Has any Boras client taken a discount to go to a preferred team? Boras usually gets top dollar for his clients. In Werth's case, it will be Philly or Boston--who will pay the highest bid.

I think it is 4/66.

The Phillies have about 10 owners who don't like to lose money. That's why they don't have Lee and Halliday. They can be outbid for Werth. They just shelled out 25 mil per year for Howard, who is no Pujols. I doubt they will break the bank for Werth. Their GM has his hands tied.

I knew it was something like that. You will remember my initial thought was that was going to be too rich for Boston's liking. I would wager he's looking for at least 5/80M to leave Philly. Not sure if that's the best deal in the world.

Adam Dunn signs with the White Sox. Once again Epstein outclassed. Could have had him cheaper then Werth and Crawford. Now Boras has us by the balls.

Are you retarded? Weren't you bitching about how you don't want "NL hitters on the team"? If you're going to keep being a f***ing idiot, at least be consistent at it.

You were blowing your load all over Crawford, who seems to be the guy they want, now you're bitching because Dunn signed elsewhere.

For the love of God, go away.

Before you get too carried away about Beltre, do bear one thing in mind Dipre.

He bore my belief about Boston's park factors out completely. To the letter even.

He's had several better HR years. 28 is upper middle of the road for him, which is about where Boston is as a home run park.

Led the league in doubles though, which is about where Boston is as a doubles park. The short wall isn't easier than most other walls to homer over, but it's very easy to double off and that will provide a lot of value, especially in an RBI spot in the lineup.

So I'd say get an opposite field hitter like Crawford in here and watch him hit that wall a lot. He always did seem to while he was just visiting. Scoring from second on a single is the easiest thing in the world for a guy like Carl, and right field gives him some room to run if he drives the ball that way too, he gets one of those things that bounces off the base and into that little right field alcove, he could go the distance.. Crawford might be the best Fenway hitter of the two in other words -- Werth won't be hurt by the Fens, but I think Fenway helps Crawford a lot.

Beltre hit 49 doubles, and only 19 of them were at Fenway.

His 19-13 2B/HR ratio was actually out of line with what you'd normally expect. Fenway is a good park for doubles, and it's also good for HR's by RHH. Do i have to look up HR numbers by again?

By the way, i've never actively advocated the re-signing of Beltre, just in case. And also, Crawford is not a hitter who drives the ball the other way with authority, but that probably wouldn't matter if they bring the fence in anyway. The thing i dislike about Crawford is his lack of discipline.

Jason Varitek will sign a one-year deal for $2 million to return to the Red Sox, with another $300,000 in incentives based on playing time

The deal originally was reported by SI.com and confirmed by a source to ESPN.com's Jerry Crasnick.

You take this way to serious. Take it easy. By the way Beltre heading to the A's NESN is reporting. All I was trying to do was enjoy Marco Sturm (stiff) being traded and Savy pre game skate and then they bring the RedSox up. Can I watch a serious contender? Wake me up when Theo signs someone other then Brandon Duckworth NESN take it easy with the scrub report!!!
