THANK THE LORD' date=' NO MORE KEVIN CASH!!!!!![/font']

Unfortunately, there's always a worse offensive catcher. And considering they're letting Tek go, I can only imagine who the backup will be next year.

I know Tek seemed pretty tearful as the season ended. Has this been confirmed or just speculated at this point

I saw that. John Buck would be a major risk. He's always shown power, but defensively he is suspect and offensively, he's had one consistent season in his career (which happens to be his walk yr). That would be a massive downgrade from VMart

There is absolutely no way Salty is plan A nor plan B. What if the starting catcher gets hurt, Salty isn't ready nor capable of a fulltime job in that case.

Buck did throw out runners quite well. But this staff is pretty slow from the stretch.

Salty is going to be your backup, at least that is the plan right now. Hence why Tek is expendable. I have a feeling VMart is priority A. If VMart signs elsewhere, Buck is the best plan B. The only way Salty starts the yr as your catcher is if VMart negotiations drag past the time when Buck signs, then he goes elsewhere. Then, you're stuck needing a trade that might not come. Colorado would be the best site, but they are letting Olivo walk and probably setting up for Iannetta to take the job there. My guess is that Olivo would probably be plan C

V-Mart, for some reason, sounds like a lock to stay in my head. And i'll believe Tek's gone when he signs with another club or retires.

Not optimistic about Buck, except maybe as a backup. It is astonishing to me that the defensive skills required to play catcher in the big leagues are so rare that players who only get on base at a .300 clip can stick in the game for a decade. The Sox should only use him as a last resort.

V-Mart is only 31. It seems like they could reasonably sign him for 4 years, maybe even with an option for 5, and at something like 10-11m/year it would be a good fit for both sides. The team is better with his bat in the lineup at the C slot.

But why should he take a sub market value deal to stick with the Red Sox? The market value for a switch hitting catcher in his early 30s with prime offensive value is $15 mil a yr. Someone will pay him that, and as a catcher, this may be his final deal. I can guarantee one team who will be bidding on him plays in the same city as the Yankees and has needed a catcher since Mike Piazza left town.

We will see. The Mets are a train wreck.

The Mets have money? News to me.

Is this the same type of money the Dodgers had saved up for Beckett?

And also, Martinez is probably not getting 15 million from anyone. 4 years @ 13-14 million is most probably what he's going to get.

What i'd like Jacko to do is to think of the Red Sox as the Yankees when he's going to make this assesments as i'm sure they will come out much more objectively in those circumstances.

Well they have about a 125 mill payroll, could be 130. next year they have 108 on the books. Arbi raises will probably bring that to 118. They could sign V-Mart for 14 mill a year or even backload the contract

Definitely.

Why fix the Starting Rotation or Bullpen when you can sign V-Mart just so the Sox don't get him.

Dipre, the market value is a Posada deal. And for some reason, I thought Posada signed for $15 mil a yr. As it turns out, he signed for a little over $13 mil a yr. So, $13 mil is the number. Sorry.

You are talking sense to a team that knows nothing but nonsense. Their owner and former GM was the ultimate shiny thing collector.

I agree with your 13 mill figure.

However, remember that because of the failures of Minaya, his succesor will probably have a different approach to re-stocking a team whose pitching is clearly flawed.

Besides, the Sox have more money coming off the books, much more flexibility to accomodate V-Mart, a better stadium, and this is a place he likes. Seems like a win-win situation for the Sox if they intend to bring him back.

Mets don't need V-Mart. They aren't going to give up on Thole and Ike Davis after their rookie seasons. I don't see them making any big moves, unless they can offload Beltran.

Agreed.

I don't like that the Sox only offered him a 2 year extension. Why do they keep low balling everyone?

The Cards are "wrecking their budget". Pujols will retire a Cardinal. They won't let him go after signing Holliday to a 7-year deal mostly to keep Pujols happy.
