and people wonder why new england has a drinking problem

What drinking problem? I have no problem consuming a 1/5 of vodka while watching the Sox!

what's that saying about new england not being a ... region with a drinking problem but being a drinking region with a ... problem?

Was at a pub with a dewey evans bat on the wall. Even they didn't have the game on.

Since I was on the west coast for the past 3 years, i'm taking full advantage of actually being able to watch the sox.

this team doesn't give a s***.

Sorry, I don't agree.

While the Sox don't have their best talent on the field, everyone out there has something to be playing for.

they should just take lackey out behind a barn and put him out of his misery

i sure hope he bounces back next year

He'll be a viable option as an ace if clay and lester get hurt.

Wait. How is this different from hoping that Paps bounces back next year? Granted, Paps numbers have declined over the last three years. But how can we expect Lackey to make a jump in his second year in the AL East?

that's a fair question. if you look at their last few years though, in my humble opinion this appears to be more of an abberation for lackey

2008 - 3.75 era, 1.23 whip

2009 - 3.83 era, 1.27 whip

2010 - 4.63 era, 1.47 whip

whereas for papelbon, it looks more like a trend

2008 - 2.34 era, 0.95 whip

2009 - 1.85 era, 1.147 whip

2010 - 3.92 era, 1.19 whip

there are also some cocerning trends in papelbon's metric stats. his whip, home run and walk rates have gone up each of the last two years and this is really the second year in a row where he's struggled by his standards

Excellent post. It's apples and oranges though. One guy spent his time starting against what most observers would see as the weaker teams in the AL. While the other was pitching about one inning largely in the heart of the AL.

My point was, ultimately, how can one project performance of a player? Even with all the advanced metrics available?

utlimately, we can't. we don't know what these players are going to do from year to year, especially pitchers. there's all kinds of advanced metrics out there but most of them are works in progress that people continually find flaws with and adjust

in many ways, lackey does remind me of beckett in 2006. he came into the year with the largest knock on him being his ability to stay healthy, and to his credit he's going to turn in a 200+ ip year. i don't expect lackey to be the same pitcher he was in the al west, but i think he's capable of a high 200 ip and a high 3's era
